Answer: French Revolution

Prince George is concerned about the noblemen of France being killed and imprisoned in case the oppressed masses of England get the same ideas and try to overthrow him. He and his friends are big fans of the Scarlet Pimpernel, an enigmatic figure risking his life to rescue members of the French nobility.

2. What are the names of Prince George's friends, who challenge Blackadder to rescue an aristocrat from France?

Answer: Topper and Smedley

Topper and Smedley are a pair of foppish noblemen who are too cowardly to go to France themselves but are great admirers of the Scarlet Pimpernel. When Blackadder invites them to come to France with him, they come up with ridiculous reasons why they are unavailable.

3. Why does the Prince's friend claim he has no choice but to go to a funeral?

Answer: He's the best man

Topper says he can't go to France because his father's just died and his funeral's the same day. Smedley says he can't go either because he's the best man. Makes no sense, but it's quite funny.
