It was implied that the slaves of Mont Royal had mostly been treated civilly, other than the fact that were enslaved. After Orry's father hired the overseer Salem Jones, the slaves were brutalized for the most minor of infractions. Priam was seen to have been treated so cruelly, that he feared for his life.

He fled the south, with the help of Madelaine. Orry and George happened upon Priam trying to board a train out of the south. Orry initially tried to stop the man, but at George's insistence allowed him to escape. David Harris played Priam. Benton, Carl and Robbie are all antagonists from other Patrick Swayze films.

Grady was the personal companion/servant of James Huntoon. Virgilia took an immediate liking to Grady, encouraged him to escape, and later married him up north. Grady and Priam were both killed at the battle that occurred at Harper's Ferry. Grady was played by Georg Stanford Brown, who was married to actress Tyne Daly for over 20 years. Kirstie Alley's performance as the obsessed abolitionist Virgilia was stunning.

She became pregnant after a promiscuous visit to West Point to witness the graduation of Charles and Billy. She went to Madeline and begged for her aid, which Madeline reluctantly gave her. Madeline and Maum Sally took Ashton out into the swamp for the procedure. Ashton later married James Huntoon. James was played by Jim Metzler and Ashton by actress Terri Garber.

After years of disappointment, Constance gave birth to a baby girl. Orry traveled up to Lehigh Station, Pennsylvania to visit George, and to pay him back his share of Hazard and Main, the cotton processing business they'd started together. Bent got to know Madam Conti while visiting her bordello. He saw a photo of Madeline and recalled seeing a painting of someone who looked a lot like her in the whore house. When he pressed her, Madam Conti easily offered up the story of Madeline's father falling in love with the woman.

She was a quarter Negress, a quadroon. Madelaine found out about the secret from Maum Sally before she was killed by Justin. Madeline did not find out the woman had been a prostitute in this miniseries. Elizabeth Taylor played the madam.

Justin had locked Madeline in her room after she returned from helping Ashton get the abortion. He beat her, locked up her, and had a doctor help drug her. She became compliant as her addiction took hold, and he'd allow her outside afterward. She stopped meeting up with Orry, who became heartbroken at the loss.

Then, much later, when she overheard Ashton, Forbes and Justin plan to murder Billy Hazard, she fled Resolute to Mont Royal. She was able to reveal the plan and save Billy. Orry kept her there and nursed her back to health.

They planned for her divorce from Justin so they could marry at last.
