Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. It would be hard enough to be married and still living at home, but when your father was a rather opinionated bigot, who was fond of calling your husband a meathead, things could get rather tense! What funny and controversial series was this?

Answer: All in the Family

First airing in 1971 and running for nine seasons, "All in the Family" dared to deal with issues that most other shows steered away from. Played by Caroll O'Connor, Archie Bunker was the ultimate bigot and chauvinist, who made us think while he made us laugh. Confrontations with his more liberal thinking daughter and son-in-law made for some excellent television. Jean Stapleton, Rob Reiner and Sally Struthers also starred.
2. This investigative reporter always managed to track down stories that dealt with supernatural creatures of the night. He always found enough evidence to convince us, the viewers, of the existence of these creatures, but never really managed to convince his editor. What interesting series was this?

Answer: Kolchak: The Night Stalker

The short lived series (it only ran one season in 1974) was a spin off from the made-for-TV movie, "The Night Stalker" that aired in 1972. Both starred Darren McGavin, of "A Christmas Story" fame, in the lead role, although they were set in different cities.

The movie was set in Las Vegas, but the setting was moved to Chicago for the series. I never understood why it only ran for one season.
3. This weekly comedy relied on a variety of different sketches to make us laugh. A cast of regulars, usually joined by one or maybe two guest stars, played different characters in a bunch of different skits. Which weekly show, whose gracious host often included a question and answer period with the audience, was this?

Answer: The Carol Burnett Show

"The Carol Burnett Show" ran for an amazing 11 seasons, between 1967 and 1978. Each week, regulars Harvey Korman, Vicki Lawrence and Lyle Waggoner joined Carol and guest stars in some hilarious skits, some of which had repeating characters. Tim Conway was one of the guest stars who eventually became a regular.
4. Take one stand-up comedian, one ex-girlfriend, one wacky neighbour and one friend who somehow manages to keep losing his job, throw in some good writing, and you have the basis for a great half-hour comedy show. What show, about nothing at all, was this?

Answer: Seinfeld

Set in New York City, "Seinfeld" ran for nine seasons from 1990 to 1998. The eccentricities of the lead characters, as they dealt with relationships and day-to-day life, provided lots of fodder for a lot of interesting episodes over the years. Jerry Seinfeld, Jason Alexander, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Michael Richards starred.
5. This police commissioner had a more hands-on approach than most commissioners did, usually diving in to get the job done himself. He was usually helped, or hindered by his somewhat eccentric wife, their no-nonsense housekeeper, and his always polite, but somewhat incompetent sergeant. What police drama was this?

Answer: McMillan and Wife

"McMillan and Wife" was part of the "Sunday Night Mystery" series, appearing once a month in the rotation and running for six seasons between 1971 and 1976. Rock Hudson and Susan Saint James starred in the title roles, while Nancy Walker and John Shuck co-starred.
6. This sitcom gave us an idealized scenario of what happened when a single mom with three girls married a single dad with three boys. Which show, often a little on the preachy side, was this?

Answer: The Brady Bunch

"The Brady Bunch" ran for five seasons between 1969 and 1974. Florence Hendersen and Robert Reed played the parents who were able to feed and clothe six kids, and pay a housekeeper on one single income. Over the years several reunion-type shows and "Brady" movies have been released.

In my opinion, the best was "The Brady Bunch Movie" (1995) which poked fun at both itself and the old series.
7. This half hour comedy focused on the culture shock of a big city lawyer and his high fashion wife deciding to return to a simpler life, and moving to the small town of Hooterville. What funny show was this, which also starred Arnold?

Answer: Green Acres

"Green Acres" ran for six seasons, from 1965 to 1971. Eddie Albert starred as the attorney, determined to reap the benefits of fresh country air, while Eva Gabor starred as his somewhat less enthusiastic wife. Arnold was everyone's favourite pig.
8. When her money flew south with a dishonest investment advisor, Maddie only had her Blue Moon detective agency to fall back on. Coupled with the firm's one legitimate detective, the wise-cracking David Addison, they set about solving cases. What show, where we waited weekly as the sexual tension between them built, was this?

Answer: Moonlighting

"Moonlighting" ran for five seasons, between 1985 and 1989. Cybill Shepherd played opposite a very debonair Bruce Willis, back when he had hair. The chemistry between the two stars had a lot to do with the show's success.
9. This special branch of the state's police force had a lot of authority and never failed to get their man. No matter how devious and smart the bad guys thought they were, it was only a matter of time before they heard the inevitable "Book 'em Danno!" What police show was this?

Answer: Hawaii Five-O

"Hawaii Five-O" ran for an incredible 12 seasons, between 1968 and 1980, with Jack Lord playing Detective Steve McGarett for the entire series. Personally I found the acting to be a little heavy-handed, but I think I was probably in the minority, given the show's success. James MacArthur played Detective Danny Williams, he who did all the booking, and he stayed with the series for 11 of the 12 years.
10. This weekly series presented us with a different story each week, usually a horror story, or one to make you question your sanity. Partially directed by one of the great masters, this legend prefaced each show with an introduction, filled with his own brand of caustic humour. Which show, in which the opening credits showed the host stepping into a stylized drawing of his profile, was this?

Answer: Alfred Hitchcock Presents

"Alfred Hitchcock Presents" ran for seven series, from 1955 to 1962. Hitchcock directed many, although not all, of the weekly shows. The series was resurrected again in 1985, after Hitchcock's death in 1980, running for four seasons the second time around.
I was quite young when the original series aired, and did not get to watch it very often, but I remember being spooked by what I did see!
