Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In which episode of series one do we see Victor get trapped in his shed by a swarm of bees, stuck in an opticians all day with his eyes shut and babysitting some unpleasant children?

Answer: 'I'll Retire To Bedlam'

This particular episode originally had 8.92 million viewers. We saw Victor resolve his predicament with the unruly kids by tying them up with rope, gagging them and locking them in the garage! We also saw Victor nearly get shaved by a mental hospital patient!
2. In 'We Have Put Her Living In A Tomb', what had Victor and Margaret offered to look after?

Answer: A tortoise

This episode originally had 8.1 million viewers. We saw the Meldrews look after a pet tortoise for a friend. Sadly, as Victor was burning grass, it was incinerated! Margaret bought a new one to replace the other, but Victor had already rung them and informed the family that it was dead. Therefore when Margaret took the new tortoise round to them, they buried it!
3. In which episode of series three did Margaret disappear?

Answer: 'Dreamland'

This episode originally had 14.5 million viewers. The episode is actually told through Mrs Warboys speaking with some women in a coffee shop. Out of the blue, Margaret disappears for two days. Then, to Victor's surprise, she suddenly appears in bed! She then explains that she'd been back to the theme park Dreamland in Margate where Victor first took them for their anniversary.
4. Now for a rather tough one. Which other classic 90's BBC comedy were the care workers watching in 'Hearts Of Darkness'?

Answer: 'Bottom'

The episode 'Digger' from series two of the classic 90's sitcom 'Bottom' was playing when the care workers in the home were relaxing. 'Hearts Of Darkness' is still known today as probably the most controversial episode of 'One Foot In The Grave' ever. It originally received viewing figures 17.48 million.
5. In 'Hole In The Sky', which 'The Young Ones' star played both McKendrick brothers?

Answer: Chris Ryan

This particular episode originally received 10.87 million viewers. Chris Ryan played both of the twin McKendrick brothers. One was a nice friendly guy, and the other liked playing sick, cruel pranks on people (especially Margaret). He also played a plumber in 'The Valley Of Fear' in series one.
6. In 'Things Aren't Simple Any More', how was Victor killed off?

Answer: He was knocked down by a hit and run driver.

This was probably one of the most shocking sitcom moments ever. As any good comedy fan will know, 'One Foot In The Grave' is the first most well-known sitcom to break all the rules and kill off its main character. This episode originally had 12.48 million viewers, which was the highest viewing figures for the entire series six.
7. What was the name of the first Comic Relief Special?

Answer: 'Victor In The Bath'

The first Comic Relief Special in 1993 entitled 'Victor In The Bath' was about Victor musing about his life whilst in the bath. The second was in 2001 and was entitled 'Visiting Uncle Dick' in which Margaret and Victor went to visit a relative, with Victor being his usual self, complaining about everything and Margaret not listening to him... or is she? 'One Foot In The Algarve' was a Christmas Special put in there just to test you and 'Victor In The Shower' does not exist.
8. What was the first Christmas Special entitled?

Answer: 'Who's Listening?'

In 1990 we saw 'Who's Listening', in which we saw the absolutely classic moment when Victor got 263 garden gnomes! Then in 1991 we saw 'The Man In The Lone Black Coat', in which we saw Victor get lumbered with a load of radioactive horse manure, and also in which Eric Idle, the writer of the classic signature theme tune, made an appearance.

In 1993 we saw the classic feature-length special 'One Foot In The Algarve', in which we saw The Meldrews, along with Mrs Warboys, go on holiday to the Algarve, where they 'lose' Mrs Warboys, where Victor is constantly followed by donkeys and also where they are followed by the reporter Martin Trout, desperately trying to get his precious, priceless roll of film back and who was brilliantly portrayed by Peter Cook.

Then, in 1994, we saw 'The Man Who Blew Away' in which we saw the suicidal stranger, Mr Foskett, played by Brian Murphy, stay with the Meldrews. In 1995, we saw the classic 'The Wisdom Of The Witch', in which Victor and Patrick shared a house and amazingly, got on well (only under the influence of alcohol though!)! Also we saw Victor heroically leap out of the window with a hell-bent, revengeful psychopath out to get Patrick. Penultimately, in 1996 we saw the classic 'Starbound' in which we saw Victor driving a motorized lawn mower around a posh garden completely off his head on cocaine that was left in his shed by a man who was living in there whilst the Meldrews were away. Lastly, in 1997, we saw the true classic 'Endgame' in which the Meldrews were lumbered with an allegedely haunted caravan, cursed by the spirit of a Devil worshipper, and also we saw Margaret have a heart attack and nearly die, but fortunately she didn't because of a twist of comic genius from the brilliant David Renwick.
9. In which series three episode were the Meldrews, along with Mrs Warboys, stuck in traffic on the motorway on a bank holiday?

Answer: 'The Beast In The Cage'

This classic episode originally received 15.6 million viewers. In it, we see probably THE most classic 'One Foot In the Grave' moment ever, which has to be the infamous song, performed by Eric Idle, which goes a bit like this:
'There's a bloke we can't stand any longer,
Always on the bleedin' moan,
Every time we mend his bloody Honda,
He's back grousing on the phone.
First we fixed his car's ignition,
Checked his breaks and clutch and then,
Overhauled his whole transmission,
He just brought it back again.
Victor Meldrew, Victor Meldrew,
He can stick up his bum... up his bum,
He can bugger off 'till kingdom come!'
10. There was a lot of controversy when the series first started. Why was this?

Answer: The amount of animal deaths.

'One Foot In The Grave' is very famous for its dark moments. It has before been named 'Britain's Best Sitcom' because of its combination of typical sitcom humour, its dark, sinister moments, and for having plots and characters that were so accurate to current events at the time.

The first animal we saw being killed of was in series one when Victor found a cat in their freezer. We also saw Victor incinerate their friend's pet tortoise, plus numerous other animal deaths.
