Victor Meldrew's saying, 'I don't believe it!' became a catchphrase across Britain, so much so that Richard will now only perform it for charity. He even cameoed in an episode of sitcom, 'Father Ted', where he got really annoyed by Ted's constant repetition of the phrase.

This song was made up by the car mechanics who fixed Victor's car again and again. They left the tape in his car radio. Jean, to Victor's fury, said that they held quite a good tune for car mechanics! Eric Idle sang to the tune of the hymn, 'Guide Me O Thou Great Jehovah'.

There were many dead animals during the series. Fatalities included two tortoises, a frozen cat, a rotting hedgehog, a robin and a swan. Animal suffering didn't end there. Those narrowly missing death included a puppy mistaken for a phone, a crushed dachshund and a missing snake!

The village of Shawford, near Winchester was the place chosen for Victor's death. They filmed the scene early on Friday morning, watched by more than 70 drinkers at the nearby Bridge Hotel. Victor watches as headlights emerge from the rain, but before he can work out if the car is his lift, it swerves towards him. He falls down, his famous tweed cap floating into the gutter. The sad scene ends with his wife Margaret arriving to find Victor dead.
