Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first major landmark of any "Amazing Race" was this waterfall in Southern Africa. What is this site of the first Fast Forward?

Answer: Victoria Falls

In the first leg of the race, teams flew from New York City (beginning the race in Central Park) to Johannesburg, South Africa, and then onwards to Livingstone, Zambia. Once they arrived, teams needed to walk along the Knife's Edge, a narrow overlook across from Victoria Falls on the Zambesi River. Teams arriving here then needed to make their way to Batoka Gorge for an exhilarating Detour task. Victoria Falls was also the site of the very first Fast Forward claimed by eventual winners Rob and Brennan. For this task, the participating team needed to claim their clue from the bottom of the Boiling Pot, a spot at the bottom of the falls.
2. At the Eiffel Tower in Leg 2, teams experienced the first of which of these during the race?

Answer: Road Block

Leaving Zambia in Leg 2, teams were told to fly to the city of Paris, France to find the world-famous Eiffel Tower. Here, teams found the first-ever Road Block of "The Amazing Race" which required that one member of each team travel to the second level balcony and use a 10-franc coin to find their next route marker, a flag atop the Arc du Triomphe. Once this task was completed, teams would be able to progress to the second Pit Stop of the race beneath the arc. Teams continued through Paris and onward to the south of France in Leg 3 visiting the Roue de Paris, Notre Dame Cathedral, and the Pantheon.
3. In Leg 4 of the race, teams crossed the Mediterranean and reached their fourth Pit Stop at the Amphitheater in El Djem. Which country was this?

Answer: Tunisia

Teams continued through France in Leg 3 and took a ferry from Marseilles to the city of Tunis, Tunisia, the capital city on the other side of the Mediterranean. Inevitably, teams received a clue in the form of a cigarette lighter featuring the name El Djem and a picture of the city's famous Amphitheater. Upon their arrival, teams located the Road Block in which one member of each team needed to grab a torch and locate a saber.

They then needed to join their partner at the next Pit Stop and sheath their sword to complete the fourth leg.
4. In Leg 5, teams remained in the Sahara Desert. Which of these animals did teams ride in the Road Block task?

Answer: Camel

In Leg 5, teams needed to complete tasks in the Sahara Desert portions of Tunisia. Although some teams hired drivers, all of the navigation was done by the racers. This caused some havoc. Upon arriving in the town of Tataouine, teams headed to a Detour and then onward to a single marked rock in the desert for the Road Block at which one member of each team needed to lead a camel to the next Pit Stop (with their other partner on top). Using a compass teams could find their fifth Pit Stop at an oasis known as Ksar Ghilane.
5. In Leg 6, teams visited Rome. What did teams need to find outside the Colosseum?

Answer: A Vespa

Departing from Tunis in Leg 6, teams were faced with the task of getting to Rome, Italy, which was made all the more difficult by an airport strike. As a result, over the course of about fifteen hours, teams made their way to this monument to find their clue waiting outside the building.

This was a Detour sending them to one of two statues in the city and inevitably to the northern reaches of the country, specifically the city of Modena and the Pagani Auto Factory. Heading to the Colosseum, teams were given nothing more than a photo with their destination circled on it.
6. In Leg 8, teams visited this Indian monument to find a clue. What is its name?

Answer: Taj Mahal

Ending Leg 7, teams stayed at the Taj Khema Hotel in Agra, India, a spot overlooking the Taj Mahal. At the start of Leg 8, they were directed to find their clue on the grounds in front of this majestic temple. Many of the tasks in India exposed teams to a whole new world of culture. Aside from the Taj Mahal, teams visited Chandni Chowk at the Red Fort for a Road Block, the Palace of the Winds in Jaipur, and Karni Mata, a temple devoted to the worship of rats.

This would be the first of many interesting India legs in "Amazing Race" history.
7. In Leg 9, which of these tasks was not completed in Thailand?

Answer: All of these were completed

Reaching the airport in Delhi, teams flew to the capital city of Thailand, Bangkok in Leg 9 and begun a romp around Southeast Asia. Upon arriving in Bangkok, teams traveled to the Temple of the Dawn and found their Detour task. Nancy and Emily and Joe and Bill, meanwhile, fought for the Fast Forward clue in the nearby Temple of the Reclining Buddha. Crossing Thailand to the Tiger Cave Temple in Krabi, teams continued to travel in Leg 10 completing adventure sports in and around Railay Beach.
8. This location in Beijing, China was the eleventh Pit Stop of the race. Where is it?

Answer: Tiantan Park

In Leg 11, teams needed to make their way out of Thailand and fly to Beijing, the capital city of China, for a series of tasks relating to Chinese lifestyle and culture (including some traditional foods during the Road Block). In the end of the leg, teams raced in taxis to the South Gate of Tiantan Park where they needed to find the Temple of Heaven. Here, Kevin and Drew were eliminated from the race-- they were the last team to have been eliminated.
In Leg 12, teams found a clue attached to a kite in Tiantan Park to start their next journey.
9. In Leg 12, the Great Wall of China at Jûyông Pass was the final international clue of the race before teams flew to which state?

Answer: Alaska

Teams completed the race through China in Leg 12 with a walk along the Great Wall of China before being told to fly to Anchorage, Alaska. Once in Alaska, teams were able to take an overnight stay at Scotty Lake, climb an ice wall, and ride a snowmobile before staying at the race's final Pit Stop at a wilderness cabin. During the final leg of the race, teams continued through Alaska on dogsled and performed a polar bear dip for the final Road Block before flying to New York City, their final destination.
10. Where in New York City did teams find the Finish Line?

Answer: Flushing Meadows Park

In Leg 13, teams flew from Anchorage, Alaska to New York City, their original starting location. After reaching a clue box in Vincent Daniels Square, teams took trains through the city to the finish line waiting at the Unisphere in Flushing Meadows Park, Queens.

Here, Rob and Brennan ran through the park to become the first-ever winners of "The Amazing Race"; they were followed soon after by New Yorkers Frank and Margarita. Joe and Bill, the third place team, received news of the finish near the previous Pit Stop in Alaska.
