Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Cersei Lannister; Joffrey Baratheon

Answer: Game of Thrones

Even if, like me, you've never seen a single episode of 'Game of Thrones' it's probable that the names of Lannister, Targaryen and Stark will still be familiar. The series, which began in 2011, is based on the novels of G R R Martin, and features several families vying to claim the Iron Throne. Throw in a few dragons, warlocks and some other magical abilities and you have one of the most successful fantasy television series ever created.
2. Agravaine de Bois; Guinevere

Answer: Merlin

This British show was based on the legends of King Arthur, but with the focus much more on the magician, Merlin. Unlike most productions, Merlin is shown as a youth, the same age as Arthur, not the long bearded old man normally depicted. Colin Morgan played Merlin, Bradley James portrayed Arthur and Guinevere, shown as a servant of the court, was played by Angel Coulby. Agravaine de Bois (Nathaniel Parker) became an advisor to Arthur after the death of Uther Pendragon.
3. Paige Matthews; Chris Halliwell

Answer: Charmed

'Charmed' ran for eight seasons, and featured three sisters - Piper, Prue and Phoebe Halliwell. They use their magical powers together, as 'the power of three' as good witches. Prue Halliwell (Shannen Doherty) was killed off in the season three finale, with Paige Matthews introduced, as a half-sister, to take her place and maintain the triple power. Chris Halliwell (Drew Fuller) appeared in later series as Piper's future son, who has travelled back in time.
4. Alex Russo; Professor Crumbs

Answer: Wizards of Waverly Place

This Disney Channel production was aimed at teenagers, and focused more on comedy than drama. The three Russo siblings are Alex, played by Selena Gomez, Justin, portrayed by David Henrie and Max, played by Jake T. Austin. The trio have to compete to see which of them can keep their magical powers for life, while the other two will become mortal. Professor Crumbs (Ian Abercrombie) is the headmaster of the college the three Russos attend and is the man who will decide who should remain a wizard.
5. Cedric Collingford (Owlface); Edward Bennet (Carrot)

Answer: Catweazle

This British show ran for only two seasons, from 1970 until 1971, and starred Geoffrey Bayldon as Catweazle, a wizard from the eleventh century who finds himself in 1969 Britain in 1969 (series one) and the 1970s (series two). Edward Bennet, known as 'Carrot' due to his hair colour, is the young boy who helps Catweazle in the first series, while Cedric Collingford, or 'Owlface' plays a similar role in series two.

Much of the humour of the shows came from Catweazle's interpretation of 'modern' technology, such as telephones, as being magic.
6. Mary Walcott; Cotton Mather

Answer: Salem

The Salem witch trials, which took place in seventeenth century Massachusetts, provided the inspiration for the television series, which ran from 2014 to 2017 originally. Janet Montgomery played Mary Walcott, also known as Mary Sibley, as the evil witch who manipulated the Puritans into believing others were witches. Cotton Mather, played by Seth Gabel in the television show, was the minister, in the show and real life, responsible for leading the 'witch hunt'.
7. Timmy Turner; Wanda

Answer: The Fairly OddParents

This animated show lasted from 2001 until 2017, and was broadcast on Nickelodeon. Timmy Turner is a ten year old growing up in California, with parents who ignore him and a babysitter who treats him unkindly. His life is transformed, although not necessarily for the better, by the arrival of two godparents, named Cosmo and Wanda.
8. Mildred Hubble; Constance Hardbroom

Answer: The Worst Witch

The characters originated in the books by Jill Murphy, with the television adaptation being a joint British-Canadian effort. The stories are set at a school for young witches, but the main character is no Harry Potter. Mildred Hubble, played by Georgina Sherrington, is an incompetent witch, as the title implies. Constance Hardbroom is the deputy headmistress, who takes an instant dislike to Mildred, constantly criticising her in front of her fellow pupils.
9. Gladys Kravitz; Endora

Answer: Bewitched

One of the oldest television shows to feature witches, 'Bewitched' starred Elizabeth Montgomery as Samantha Stephens, a witch married to a man who has little understanding of her powers. The 'mixed marriage' meets with disapproval from Samantha's family, with her mother, Endora (Agnes Moorehead) causing regular problems for the couple. The show ran from 1964 until 1972 originally.
10. Salem Saberhagen; Hilda Spellman

Answer: Sabrina the Teenage Witch

Melissa Joan Hart was the star of the show, playing Sabrina Spellman, who finds out about her magical powers when she reaches sixteen. Sabrina lives with two aunts, who are both aged around 500, named Hilda (played by Caroline Rhea) and Zelda (Beth Broderick). Salem Saberhagen is an equally old wizard, but has been turned into a cat to prevent his bid for world domination.

As he is a wizard, the cat is able to talk with his voice provided by Nick Bakay.
