"Pride and Prejudice" on BBC! Trivia Quiz

In my humble opinion, Jane Austen herself would be pleased with the 1995 BBC adaptation of her famous novel. Some information I gathered from IMDb, while a knowledge of the show and the book will help you as well.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The show begins with an opening scene different from the book, one that involves Mr. Bingley and Mr. Darcy. What are they doing in this opening scene?

Answer: riding horses and looking over Netherfield property

Austen's novel begins by describing the importance of marriage and fortune. However, the director wished to get the action of the novel started early on (yes, there is a great deal of action in this novel!), so he first shows us these characters inspecting the Netherfield property for Mr. Bingley to possibly lease.
2. Which actress was pregnant during filming?

Answer: Susannah Harker (Jane)

Ms. Harker was able to continue in this role thanks to well-placed shawls and the cut of the "Empire silhouette" dresses during that time period. Another interesting fact about Susannah Harker is that her mother, Polly Adams, also played Jane Bennet in the 1967 BBC version of "Pride and Prejudice".
3. Two of the actors/actresses are related to each other by blood. Choose the correct two by their character names.

Answer: Mrs. Gardiner and Georgiana Darcy

Joanna David, who played Mrs. Gardiner, is the real-life mother of Emilia Fox, otherwise known as Georgiana Darcy. Now that I know this, I can definitely see a resemblance between these two ladies.
4. Which actor/actress is an actual relation of Jane Austen?

Answer: Anna Chancellor (Caroline Bingley)

According to IMDb, Anna Chancellor is a direct descendent of Edward Austen, Jane's elder brother. Jane Austen never married, so did not have children of her own.
5. What is the name of the sycophant parson who owes his livelihood to the "condescension" of Lady Catherine de Bourgh?

Answer: Mr. Collins

Possibly one of the most irritating characters in literature, Mr. Collins cannot say enough about the graciousness and affability of his patronness, Lady Catherine, usually while insulting whoever he is speaking to at the time. This character is played to the hilt by actor David Bamber.
6. What color waistcoat does Mr. Hurst wear at the first Meryton assembly?

Answer: burgundy

Interestingly enough, after a few drinks, Mr. Hurst's cheeks exactly match his lovely waistcoat. I suppose, though, the only way Mr. Hurst could sink so low as to tolerate such country society was to get a bit lit.
7. How did Sir William Lucas inadvertently insult Caroline and Louisa?

Answer: by offering to introduce them to society at St. James

Sir William is one of the nicest characters, and spends a great deal of time commenting on how "capital" things are. He does not realize, however, that his offer to the Bingley sisters would be considered an insult by these very snobbish women. Personally, I would have enjoyed hearing him call Caroline an old maid!
8. In what English county are Longbourn, Meryton, and Netherfield located?

Answer: Hertfordshire

One of the fun things to do while reading the book or watching the show is to look at a map of England and figure out where these lovely places are. Lady Catherine de Bourgh's home, Rosings, is in Kent, while Mr. Darcy's home, Pemberley, is in Derbyshire.
9. When Jane receives a note from Caroline Bingley, inviting her to Netherfield, who snatches it from her hand before she can finish reading it?

Answer: her mother

Ah, yes - Mrs. Bennet! Her greatest goal in life is to see her daughters married, and although it was not a note from Mr. Bingley, she still had high hopes of Jane becoming close friends with his sisters.
10. What did Elizabeth's walking to Netherfield demonstrate to Caroline Bingley?

Answer: "an abominable sort of conceited independence"

Caroline and her sister, Louisa, enjoy bashing Elizabeth and her relatives every chance they get. Their brother, Mr. Bingley, does his best to defend his new friends, but suffers under their constant criticism.
11. What color cloaks do Lydia and Kitty wear on their walk to Meryton, when everyone is first introduced to Mr. Wickham?

Answer: red

Red is such a bright color for the ladies in this film. For the most part we see very muted colors, particularly in the dresses of the Bennet ladies. It seems almost like these cloaks are a way to tie these two flighty young girls to the officers in their red regimentals.
12. What does Darcy watch Elizabeth doing from his window, following his bath?

Answer: playing with a huge black and white dog

By now we can see his blossoming interest in Elizabeth, but his own pride and prejudice continue to hold him back.
13. By what time in the afternoon does Mr. Collins' letter say he should arrive at Longbourn for his first visit?

Answer: 4:00

Mr. Collins' letter gives a very detailed itinerary for his trip to Longbourn - undoubtedly spelled out for him by Lady Catherine de Bourgh!
14. What is the reaction outside Netherfield to Mary's singing at the ball?

Answer: a howling dog

As everyone at the ball cringes at Mary's performance (especially her two eldest sisters), a lone dog howls mournfully until he is scolded by a man near one of the coaches. Poor Mary, but more to the point, poor Elizabeth and Jane!
15. How does Jane convince Mr. Collins to go to Mary, in order to allow Elizabeth a private chat with Mr. Wickham?

Answer: She tells him there is a matter "of great doctrinal import".

This is one of my favorite parts - Jane has taken to doing a bit of matchmaking herself, and desires to drag Mr. Collins away from her sister. He hesitates when told that Mary is struggling with a religious passage, and so Jane emphasizes the fact that this situation is truly a crisis "of great doctrinal import"!
