Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In episode 9 of season 4, Cheers and Gary's Olde Towne Tavern were involved in a bowling tournament. Which unlikely member of the Cheers' gang saved the day and won the tournament for them?

Answer: Diane

Diane saved the day for Cheers. Diane had bowled for PE in college for six semesters but did not want anyone to know, so she didn't tell them. But Gary insulted her sorority and so she stepped up. Because of Diane's heroics, Cheers won their first competition against Gary's. Woody had been a champion bowler in Indiana but he hadn't bowled since the 'tragedy' and froze while trying to bowl for the guys. Coach passed away at the end of season three so he was not present during this episode. Norm did not bowl for the team, but when he went into the lounge at the bowling alley everyone said "Norm" just like they do when he enters Cheers.
2. In episode 23 of season 6, Cheers was celebrating the second anniversary of their one and only win over Gary's Olde Towne Tavern when Gary stole the trophy and broke it. What was the FIRST thing Cheers did to retaliate?

Answer: Replaced Gary's champagne glasses with dribble glasses

Rebecca walked into the bar as they were celebrating the second anniversary and Sam explained to her that Gary had a 173 to 1 lead in the duel between the bars but that Cheers had won the last one and would not agree to a rematch. While the trophy was being passed around the bar it disappeared and ended up in Gary's possession.

After Gary broke the trophy, Carla and Sam went over with a bottle of champagne to make peace. All of the glasses in Gary's were dribble glasses that Carla had switched out with Gary's regular glasses.

After that Gary sent the exterminators to Cheers saying they had a rat problem and then put sheep in Rebecca's office. In retaliation, Carla cut into Gary's cable and interrupted the fight broadcast, replacing it with Cliff and Norm reading poetry. All of Gary's customers went to Cheers. Finally, Gary sent the real Wade Boggs to Cheers as a peace offering but the gang did not believe it was really him so they chased him down the street and stole his pants.
3. In episode 10 of season 7, it was time for the annual Bloody Mary contest. Several attempts were made by the gang at Cheers to fool Gary into missing the contest. Who ended up being the mastermind behind the successful effort?

Answer: Carla

The episode started with Gary coming into Cheers and bragging about winning the Bloody Mary contest for four years straight. Sam and Woody devised an elaborate plan that involved Woody quitting Cheers and going to work for Gary as well as Woody disguising himself as the judge.

But Gary saw through all of their ploys. Carla, on the other hand, paid her neighbor to pretend to be the judge then stole Gary's wallet to pay him. Carla's plan succeeded where Woody's and Sam's failed.
4. In episode 12 of season 8, the guys talked Frasier into betting $500 with Gary on Sam as he raced Robin's yacht in a regatta. What happened in the race?

Answer: The boat blew up because someone was trying to kill Robin

Robin had been planning on sailing his sailboat, the "Rebecca", in the Cape Cod Regatta but gets called away on business. Since there was a $10,000 prize involved Sam agreed to race the boat with Carla and Norm as his crew. While on the boat the three discovered a bomb and had to abandon ship to keep from being blown up.

Before the race, Cliff called Gary and made a bet with him that Sam would win the race but the gang needed $500 to make the bet. Earlier in the show Frasier had told the gang he had $500 with him to buy a bond for Frederick's future education. Frasier ended backing the guys' bet with Gary and lost the money when the boat was blown up.
5. In episode 21 of season 8, after pulling a prank on Gary's Olde Towne Tavern, the guys become paranoid while waiting for the inevitable reprisal. In order to preempt Gary, Sam, Woody, Norm, and Cliff decided to shave their heads to spell out G-A-R-Y in hopes of appeasing Gary before he strikes back. Which one of the four faked shaving his head because his hair was so important to who he was?

Answer: Sam

The episode started with the wooden Indian statue, Tecumseh, disappearing one day from the entrance to the bar. Because it was almost Saint Patrick's Day, the gang assumed Gary had stolen it. In retaliation, Sam, Norm, and Cliff padlocked Gary's and then placed toxic signs and police tape around the building so that no one would go there on Saint Patrick's Day, one of the busiest bar days of the year. Later on, they learned that Rebecca had sent Tecumseh out to be revarnished and Gary had nothing to do with it.

The guys decided to try to appease Gary rather than wait for the inevitable reprisal by shaving their heads so that each one had one of the letters of Gary's name on their heads. After they had done this, Rebecca told them Gary was in Florida for the last month or so and that he didn't even know about the prank the guys had played on his bar.

Then Carla noticed that Sam had something funny on his head and realized it was a skull cap. Sam had not really shaved his head like the others.

The episode ends with the guys chasing after Sam to shave his head.
6. Episode 1 of season 9 began with the bartender at Gary's Olde Towne Tavern giving a play by play of how Season 8 had ended to two patrons. They asked how he knew so much of what was going on at Cheers and he said he had his sources. Which two bar flies were bumming free beers by telling the goings on at Cheers?

Answer: Norm and Cliff

After the bartender finished updating his patrons on what had happened at Cheers, he took two beers to a table in the bar. At that table sat Cliff and Norm and the bartender said to Norm, "Another round on the house Mr. Peterson?" Clearly Cliff and Norm had been using the juicy gossip to get free beers from Gary's Olde Towne Tavern.

The bartender explained how Robin had gotten caught using insider information in an attempt at a hostile takeover of the corporation that ran Cheers but that Sam had turned Robin in to the corporation. In appreciation they sold the bar back to Sam for $1.
7. In episode 2 of season 9, Sam brought in Kevin McHale as a ringer in a basketball game against Gary's Olde Towne Tavern. Which member of the gang accidentally injured Kevin during the game?

Answer: Woody

Gary of Gary's Olde Towne Tavern showed up at Cheers one day with two very tall men and said they were his new bartenders; clearly they were ringers for the upcoming basketball game. Sam knew Kevin McHale and called him to play for Cheers by telling him the proceeds were for charity. Kevin figured out Sam was scamming him but said he did know an orphanage and if Sam gave the winnings to the orphans he would play for them. Sam agreed and they beat Gary's team but McHale got hurt in the process when he and Woody got tangled up.

The next day a man showed up at Cheers claiming to be the Celtics team physician. He said Kevin broke his foot and was out for the season. Carla bought his silence with the money they won. A few minutes later Kevin showed up walking without any problem and said he just iced the foot and was fine.

The gang realized Gary tricked them again. Gary then showed up and gave the money to the orphans and got credit instead of Cheers.
8. In episode 7 of season 10, Gary died as the result of a practical joke played by the gang. Who was the only member of the gang who wouldn't believe Gary was really dead?

Answer: Sam

It was Halloween at Cheers and the gang was on edge waiting for Gary to pull a prank. Gary pulled a prank and then came to Cheers to apologize and said he had high blood pressure so he wanted to call off any gags for that night. Sam doesn't believe Gary and they set up a prank at the Olde Towne Tavern in which Carla's severed head appeared as an apparition.

The gang went to Gary's bar to see the head and found Gary dead on the floor of the bar. Sam wouldn't believe he was dead even after the funeral and burial. Back at Cheers the gang was sitting around and Sam finally admitted Gary was truly dead and that he would miss him. Woody went into the bathroom crying and Sam went after him.

When Sam brought Woody back out it turned out to be Gary in a wig. Everyone had been in on the trick to get Sam.
9. In episode 23 of season 10, Gary's Olde Towne Tavern was bought by a reputed mob boss named Frank Carpaccio. What nickname did Frank and Josef Mengele share?

Answer: Angel of Death

Frank and Mengele were both called 'The Angel of Death'. In the episode, the gang decided to strike up a new rivalry with the new owner of Gary's so they teepeed the front of the bar. In retaliation, Frank blew the front door of Cheers in with plastic explosives.

The police told the gang who Frank was but Sam wouldn't believe it and thought Gary was behind it all. Sam, Carla, Woody, Cliff, and Norm, went back to Gary's and acted like they were apologizing before pulling the fire alarm and setting off the sprinkler system. Frank vowed to kill them all and their families and pets too.

The FBI showed up and told the gang that Frank really was a mob boss. They offered to put the five of them into protective custody and everyone went except Sam. Carla, Woody, Norm, and Cliff got on the bus and were dropped off in the middle of nowhere in North Dakota.

It turned out Sam had set it all up to get even with them for the stunt they pulled with Gary the prior Halloween. Sam told Frasier he had to take out a loan to pay for the gag and he would be paying it off for 10 years.
10. In episode 19 of season 11, Sam vowed to get revenge on Gary once and for all after a particularly humiliating defeat. Which con man, who appeared numerous times in the early years of the show and was played by Harry Anderson, did Sam turn to for help in getting revenge?

Answer: Harry the Hat

Harry Anderson first appeared as Harry the Hat in Episode 4 of Season 1 and then again in Episode 16 and Episode 19 of Season 1, Episode 10 of Season 2, Episode 10 of season 6 and finally in this episode. The guys lose a bet to Gary and have to sing naked in Gary's bar to pay off the bet. Sam tried to recruit Harry to help him get revenge but Harry wanted no part of it. Sam went to Gary's to make peace and surrender but while there saw a bulldozer smash the front of Gary's bar. Upon returning to Cheers, Sam told the guys what had happened and then Gary walked in. Gary said he sold his bar to a real estate developer and had demolished it himself.

He then introduced the developer as one Rutherford Cunningham but Sam recognized him as Harry the Hat. Harry had tricked Gary into destroying his own bar and had helped the gang finally get revenge on Gary.
