Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The staff of the hotel make sure things run smoothly. Who are the owners of the Badehotellet?

Answer: Julius and Molly Andersen

Julius and Molly Andersen are the couple who own and run the Badehotellet. He appears to serve as the business manager and she seems to be the head cook/housekeeper. In the past, before they were married, Julius seems to have employed Molly as the housekeeper for the hotel.

Georg and Therese are the parents of Amanda and Vera. He is described as a "grosserer" (usually translated as "merchant") Otto and Alice are the parents of Bertha and Leslie and employ an often challenged governess/nanny. He is described as a "fabrikant" (which appears to refer to a factory owner). Hjalmar is an office manager and Helene is his noticeably younger wife.
2. Each season of "Badehotellet" takes place in a different year. In which year does the first series take place?

Answer: 1928

Series (seasons) 1-5 take place during the years 1928-1932. Series 6-8 take place during the years 1939-1941. Series 9 takes place during the year 1945. Beginning in series 2 occasional references to "economic troubles" (the Great Depression) are given. The clothing of the guests and the handful of automobiles we see have a 1920s feel. Electricity has been introduced relatively recently to the badehotellet in the first episode. One guest (Hjalmar Aurland) has been able to bring an (admittedly large) radio with him to the badehotellet. The badehotellet has a telephone near the stairs for use of the guests and a second one in the office of Julius.

The badehotellet is located on the west coast of northern Jutland, several miles south of the town of Skagen.
3. One of the badehotellet owners dies during the first series. What sends this person to the hospital?

Answer: Electrical shock

The rooms at the Badehotellet do not have private bathrooms. Mr. Andersen takes advantage of this to peep through the keyhole when attractive female guests soak in the tub of the bathroom, particularly Amanda Madsen. Amanda's sister, Vera, takes advantage of this to ensure that Mr. Madsen receives a shock on one occasion. This sends Mr. Andersen to the hospital in Skagen where he later dies.

When Mr. Andersen dies, several of the guests contemplate spending the rest of the season at another hotel, concerned that Mrs. Andersen will not be able to run the badehotellet on her own. The staff of the badehotellet come together to impress the guests enough that the guests decide to stay for the rest of the season.
4. The other badehotellet owner has a child who was given up for adoption. Which character on the series was adopted?

Answer: Morten

Morten was adopted by the nearby Enevoldsen family and works as a fisherman. He gets along well generally with the staff at the hotel including Molly Andersen, whom he is unaware that she is his birth mother. Julius Andersen has a son, Poul, from a previous marriage. Poul is estranged from his father and lives in the United States. Some years ago, Julius interfered with a relationship that Poul had with one of the staff of the hotel.

Ditmar is the man with whom Georg Madsen becomes a business partner. Martha is a kitchen maid/cook at the hotel. Fie is another maid and arguably the main character during the first several series.
5. Sometimes seemingly small actions help to set up ongoing storylines. Who is driving the car which runs over a chicken in the first episode of series 1?

Answer: Georg Madsen

As he is driving his family to the Badehotellet, Georg Madsen runs over a chicken from the farm of Morten Enevoldsen's family. While Georg did not run over the chicken intentionally, he seems unconcerned with any damage he has done. Later, when Morten delivers the dead chicken to the Badehotellet and attempts to collect a payment for the cost of the chicken, Georg is quite put out. In another episode, Georg attempts to fight Morten before Morten shoves him to the ground.

When Georg sees Morten leaving a guest's room at the Badehotellet, he assumes that he is up to no good and later suggests to the police that Morten may be the murder in a local case. Morten is forced to flee and spend the next year on a ship that is travelling far away. In reality, Morten was in the room in an attempt to avoid being seduced by Georg's daughter, Amanda.
6. By the end of the first series, the co-owner of the hotel asks one of the employees to stay over the winter to assist. Which member of the staff stays at the hotel during the winter?

Answer: Fie

Fie Kjaer is the new employee at the Badehotellet in series 1. She has previously feared that her father, who has been in ill-health may in fact be dying. When Mrs. Andersen offers the position working at the hotel in the winter to help maintain and pre the Badehotellet, Fie is hesitant to take it at first. Eventually, Fie is convinced to stay over the winter.

Otilia and Edith are maids like Fie while Martha is a kitchen maid. The interactions between the staff of the hotel as opposed to the guests at the hotel is reminiscent of the feel of many "manor house" television series and movies where the interactions of the family can contrast with the interactions of the servants.
7. Late in the first series, Count Ditmar becomes a partner in a scheme to purchase land near the Badehotellet on which vacation cottages could be built and rented. Who is his partner in this plan?

Answer: Georg Madsen

In many ways, Madsen is the more aggressively active member of the partnership. The ongoing attempts to secure then land and necessary permits are a recurring theme of the first two series. Madsen arranges for Count (Grav) Ditmar to become engaged to his daughter, Amanda, as a way to reinforce the business partnership. Amanda herself is somewhat lukewarm concerning this engagement.

In the second series, several new guests come to the Badehotellet, including the architect that Madsen has hired to design the cottages. When the architect is also attracted to Amanda, new plot complications develop.
8. During the second series, Poul (the estranged child of the deceased co-owner of the Badehotellet) comes to collect his inheritance. In which business does he need the money to invest?

Answer: Car Dealership

Poul had emigrated to the United States after becoming estranged from his father. He has been working for the last several years as an auto mechanic at a car dealership in a large city in the United States. He has an opportunity to become the owner of the dealership but needs the money that he will collect from his share of Mr. Andersen's estate. The plan is that he will receive his payment in cash and Molly Andersen (his stepmother) will receive the Badehotellet.

Though Poul was estranged from his father, he seems to get along well with Molly. When a revaluation of the Badehotellet suggests it has a higher worth than originally thought, Molly finds herself needing to borrow money to pay off Poul's share. Poul is sympathetic, trying to find a way for the lawyers to set a payment plan so that it is not too difficult for Molly.
9. As the series progresses, Helene Aurland finds that she is pregnant, but her husband Hjalmar is not the father. Who is the father?

Answer: Edward Weyse

Actor Edward Weyse is shown actively pursuing Helene Aurland during series one while he is at the Badehotellet with his pregnant wife, Sibylle. Once she discovers that she is pregnant, Helen first attempts to seduce her husband to convince him that she is carrying his child. When this is unsuccessful, she is forced to confess the truth.
10. Among the thirteen episodes of series one and two, what makes the last episode of series two unique?

Answer: It is a behind the scenes look

The episode, airing on Denmark's TV2 on March 09, 2015 is a behind the scenes look about the making of "Badehotellet". Features include the work of the costume designers in representing the fashions of the 1920s and the visual effects of the series. The thoughts of the creators/authors of the series are shared. The location of the physical building that is the Badehotellet is shown.
