1. A girl was hired in the human resources department where I work. I asked her out on a date, but so had another one of my fellow employees. We decided to both take her out and I got tickets to the opera. My co-worker got tickets to the monster truck rally. So, we decided to do both. We went on the date that he planned first and watched a few races. During an intermission, he pulled out a card and told me to sit in the corner for twenty minutes. Can you believe the nerve of some people? Well, turnabout is fair play, so I wrote up a card myself and presented it to him at the opera. It was a long evening and at the end, she told both of us how much fun we had but then she looked at me and told me that she was more of a "deep down dirty in the mud" kind of gal and sent me packing. I am sure that this kind of thing happens all of the time. In fact, I even saw a show about it on TV. What show is this?

Answer: Dismissed

"Dismissed" is a dating show on MTV, where either two guys compete for one girl or vice-versa. The "cards" I referred to are "Time Outs" which give one guy or girl 20 minutes alone to make an impression. At the end of the date, the courted individual turns to one of the contestants and says, "You are dismissed." It is a harsh concept but it gets good ratings. "Elimidate" has the same concept except that there are four guys for every girl or vice-versa. "Change of Heart" is a show where a couple that has been dating and is having romantic troubles test their resolve by each going on a date with someone new, and watch the footage of their significant other while attempting not to act jealous.

The people that they dated come sit next to them and then at the end of the show, both the male and female hold up a car that either says "Stay Together" or "Change of Heart". "Shipmates" is actually a one on one date, but it occurs while they are guests abroad a cruise ship. Now, who said chivalry was dead? ;)

2. I was having some financial problems so I decided to go over to Bjorn Borg's house to try and make some money. Ever since "Borgy", as we like to call him, left professional tennis he started a cute little challenging game as he is such a competitor. In this game, you sit on a swing in his backyard over a flame while he asks you trivia questions. It is a quick and easy way to make money but if you lose, then you get burned. I am sure that you have an ex-athlete in your neighborhood that provides this type of entertainment for you as well. I even saw a show on TV that resembled this. What show am I talking about?

Answer: The Chair

John McEnroe was the host of this short-lived show where players sat in the "hot seat" as McEnroe grilled them with questions. The contestant is strapped to a heart rate monitor and if he/she can keep their heart rate above the target that is selected, they will find themselves a winner. Besides getting nervous from the rapid-fire questions, there are "distractions" such as flames to throw the contestant off guard. It only lasted two months on ABC.
"Greed" was an offshoot of "Who Wants to be a Millionaire", but had contestants turning on each other. It was also short lived and was on FOX.
"Fear Factor" is a well-known show where contestants have to withstand things such as lying in a coffin covered in rats or perform stunts and overcome dangerous obstacles.
"The Weakest Link" is also well-known and popular and has people answering rapid questions from Ann Robinson and then the contestants vote off who they feel is the weakest link at the end of each round. Then Anne gets to say her famous line of "You are the Weakest Link...Goodbye!" after usually degrading a player or two. George Gray hosts another version of the show as well.

3. Every summer, I get together with a group of random strangers and go somewhere remote. This summer, we went to the Gobi desert. We did not bring much food or water, so we devised a system where we broke up into two separate tribes, had competitions, and at the end of each day, we would vote someone out of the desert. It is a lot of fun and a great way to make friends. They even made a show out of it. Which show best depicts what my summer hobby is?

Answer: Survivor

There have been several "Survivor" shows and they have taken place in many different areas of the country. The common theme is supposed to be unity and banding together to survive the harsh conditions as well as having the contestants pool their resources together.

However, by voting people off, it seems to suggest that we live in a "Dog Eat Dog" world and it is ultimately "Every Man for Himself" (or woman).

4. I have a weekend hobby where I get together with my closest friends and we attempt to rob banks. It is so much fun! However, the bankers have caught on and always send someone undercover to bust our ring. They can be such party poopers. We always try to figure out who this person is. Last week, I saw a TV show which the same premise. What is its name?

Answer: The Mole

"The Mole" was another ABC show where 14 players go through obstacles that are both physical and mental and attempt to find out who is the "narc" amongst them. The idea for this show was started in Belgium. I made up the other shows. Professor Plum is from the board game, "Clue."

5. My good friend Melissa Rivers was on this show called "I'm a Celebrity-Get Me Out of Here".

Even celebrities cannot stay away from the influx of "Reality TV". Melissa Rivers was part of a 10-man crew in the Australian rain forest that also voted each other off and the winner's money went to charity. I believe that this is why they invented the word "copycat". With the exception of one or two different twists, many of these shows are identical.

There have been other shows as well. I don't remember Melissa giving too much fashion advice on the island.

6. Every time a beautiful new woman announces that she is single, I always court her. I am sure that you would as well. The last time this occurred (I believe it was yesterday), a lot of other guys courted her as well. She said that she loved us all and I believe her. She had so much love to give. I poured my heart out to her as she was beautiful and sincere and I wanted to meet her parents. I didn't care about the money. This probably goes on so often, that I even saw a TV show made out of it. Which show am I referring to?

Answer: The Bachelorette

Trisha Rehn was "The Bachelorette" which was on ABC on Wednesday nights. She would dwindle the group down each episode until there was one guy left. Of course, "The Bachelor" had the same premise with the gender roles reversed. There have been more than one "Bachelor" series. There was also a "Joe Millionaire" where the studio executives took a $10,000 a year "Joe" named Evan Marriott and pretended that he was a millionaire to see if the woman suiting him were really after Evan or his money. These shows have produced tremendous ratings!

7. I am a big sports fan and always wanted to meet Tiger Woods. Of course, so do many people. I saw a flyer in my mailroom that stated that if anyone was interested in meeting Tiger, to call the number listed. I did and there was a great group of guys that were going to attempt to meet him but we had to compete against another similar group. No one had any funds so we had to travel cross-country and figure out a way to get by. What show on TV was similar to this?

Answer: Beg, Borrow, and Deal

Even ESPN has gotten into the world of "Reality TV". As the title suggests, the groups had to "beg", "borrow", and "deal" to accomplish their mission. "Temptation Island" was another reality show where couples that were having problems romantically went to an island and were all tempted by the other couples' husbands and wives. I guess coveting thy neighbor's wife is ok if it on "Reality TV". I made up the other two shows.

8. Captain Kangaroo was nice enough to share his videos with me that showed his darker side. He was touring with the Grateful Dead and bit the head off of a live iguana. Even Mr. Greenjeans got loose and urinated on the Liberty Bell. Captain Kangaroo was upset when he didn't sign a contract to televise this. Imagines his surprise when this family got huge publicity just by showing their day-to-day life?

Answer: The Osbournes

"The Osbournes" has been a huge success on MTV and shows a burnt Ozzy Osbourne and his family living day-to-day life. People know Ozzy as the leader of "Black Sabbath" as well as his famous incidents like urinating on the Alamo and biting the head off of a bat. However, Ozzy is a homebody too! He tends to curse once or twice during the show. ;)

9. My neighbor and I like to play a game where we switch houses for the weekend and re-decorate each other's homes. He is such a kidder, as I always come home and find beaded curtains where doors used to be and totem polls in my kitchen. I usually remove all of his furniture and leave nothing but beanbag chairs in his house. I think other people might have caught onto our idea, as I saw this on television. What show am I talking about?

Answer: Trading Spaces

"Trading Spaces" debuted on "The Learning Channel" and has hosts that help the neighbors decorate each other's homes. The most notable names are Genevieve Gorder, Ty Pennington, and Amy Wynn Pastor, but there are more. This has quickly become a very popular show and "copycat" shows have sprung.
"While You Were Out" has a similar premise except that usually a husband or wife is away and comes home to a redecorated home.
I made up the other two names (there is a show about makeovers but it is the people that are made over, not the homes).

10. I used to be a weekly contestant on "Star Search". I would change my name every week and pretend to be a comedian, a singer, or anything just to get close to Ed McMahon. Now, I can no longer pretend, as Ed is too tied up with the "Publisher's Clearing House" and the judges are much more harsh! They are actually going to air this on TV! I will finally be a TV star. Any idea what I am talking about?

Answer: American Idol

Replacing the old concept of "Star Search" is "American Idol". It is one of the highest rated "Reality" shows on TV. Kelly Clarkson was the first winner and achieved quite a bit of fame. The "harsh" judge I was referring to is Simon Cowell, who made a name for himself as well, by crushing young kids' dreams. Well...
