1. Bonanza
Answer: Dan Blocker
Lovable actor Dan Blocker played the middle son 'Hoss' on the long-running western "Bonanza". This popular western took place on the Ponderosa Ranch near Virginia City, Nevada around 1870. This show ran from 1959 until 1973 and had 431 episodes. It went on to be seen in syndication all across North America.
2. The Virginian
Answer: James Drury
With 249 episodes filmed, "The Virginian", starring James Drury was one of the longest lasting westerns on American television. "The Virginian" was one of the first 90 minute westerns. One of the most interesting facts about the show was that the name of the lead character, played by James Drury, was never provided.
3. Laramie
Answer: Hoagy Carmichael
American composer Hoagy Carmichael portrayed 'Jonsey' in the popular western, "Laramie" for its first year. The show ran four seasons and was one of the first to transition from black and white into color. The show took place at a stagecoach stop in 1880 Wyoming.
4. Rawhide
Answer: Clint Eastwood
Running from 1959 until 1966, "Rawhide", starring a very young Clint Eastwood, had young girls entranced with its sexy young star. Set around 1860, in the far west, the show featured some of the real social issues faced at the time. Many episodes featured situations caused by the American Civil War and its aftermath.
5. The Rifleman
Answer: Chuck Conners
Set in the New Mexico Territory around 1875, "The Rifleman" was a black and white western starring Chuck Conners. It featured Conners as a widowed soldier turned rancher, trying to teach his young son right from wrong. The show featured many famous guest stars and ran from 1958-1963.
6. Gunsmoke
Answer: James Arness
Actor James Arness played Sheriff Matt Dillon in the popular western "Gunsmoke" which ran from 1955-1975. "Gunsmoke" is often listed as the longest running live-action drama on American television. It took place in Dodge City, Kansas and centered around the local residents and the troubles of living in the old west.
7. Maverick
Answer: James Garner
"Maverick" featured actor James Garner and Jack Kelly as a pair of brothers who were both well-dressed and charming gamblers. Unlike many westerns of the time, "Maverick" took place all across the western U.S. including many episodes on Mississippi riverboats. The show ran from 1957-1962. It was one of the few westerns to use a lot of comedic dialogue.
8. Wagon Train
Answer: Ward Bond
"Wagon Train" started in 1957. Most of its eight season were filmed in black and white but a few were done on color film. This television western featured many actors, such as Ward Bond, who had made their names filming western movies. Their familiar faces helped this western about being on a wagon train, tremendously.
9. The Texan
Answer: Rory Calhoun
"The Texan" ran from 1958-1960. It featured actor Rory Calhoun as a western "Robin Hood" type character. He was portrayed riding all over the wild west helping those in need. It should be noted that although the character portrayed by Rory Calhoun was named Bill Longley, the television show is not based on the real-life gunfighter and outlaw of the old-west that bears the same name.
10. The Big Valley
Answer: Barbara Stanwyck
"The Big Valley" took place in the San Joaquin Valley of California, around 1870. Barbara Stanwyck played the widowed matriarch of the Barkley Ranch which she ran with her three sons and a daughter. In 1966, Stanwyck won an Emmy award for her portrayal of a tough western woman who took flack from anyone.
