1. Adam

Pernell Roberts portrayed Ben's handsome oldest son, Adam. He was the most serious of the Cartwright men. Roberts left the series after six seasons with the explanation that Adam left ranching to become a seaman.
2. Major Seth Adams

Veteran actor Ward Bond played the short-tempered wagon master for the show's first three seasons. He successfully guided pioneers through natural disasters, inclement weather, Native American raiding parties, and infighting among the travelers to a better life in the promised land of the West.
3. Blue Boy

Blue Cannon was John Cannon's only child. He worked on his father's Arizona ranch in Apache country near Tucson. He enjoyed sketching caricatures of the ranch hands. 4. Barney West

Flint was a scout for the wagon train. Actor Robert Horton was cast to portray the character of Flint. He was the quintessential tall, dark, and handsome hero who later departed the show to pursue a singing career.

Lovely and talented actress Linda Crystal played Victoria Cannon, the show's lone female character. Much younger than her husband John, she had him completely smitten with her charm, kindness, and loyalty. Bilingual, she could upbraid her brother Mano in Spanish and easily revert to English in dulcet tones when speaking to John, Buck, or Blue.
8. Ponderosa Ranch

Patriarch Ben Cartwright built a large ranch near Lake Tahoe in Nevada and named it after the forests of ponderosa pine in the area. He was a widower with three adult sons by his three wives.
9. Buck Cannon

Buck was John Cannon's brother and uncle to Blue Boy. Cameron Mitchell was cast in the role. Sometimes at odds with his brother over management of the ranch, he and Manolito became pals who worked the ranch and mentored Blue.
10. Hop Sing

Hop Sing, portrayed by Victor Sen Yung, was the loyal cook to the Cartwright family. When exasperated, he admonished the family in rapid-fire Chinese.

Frank McGrath was a veteran actor and stunt man who landed the role of Charlie Wooster, cook for the wagon master and scouting crew. He was fond of his whiskey but performed his duties faithfully. He provided humor and showed his stunt abilities by taming and riding a buffalo in an episode.
12. Manolito Montoya

Manolito was Victoria Montoya Cannon's brother. Henry Darrow played this laid back, fun-loving character. He worked on the High Chaparral ranch and had many amusing adventures with Buck Cannon.
13. Coop Smith

Coop was another of the wagon train's scouts. His character was added to the cast after Robert Horton left the series. Robert Fuller, who had played on the Western "Laramie" before this show, seamlessly fit into the cast.
14. Candy

Soap opera veteran David Canary portrayed trusted ranch hand Candy. He played a comedic sidekick to Cartwright brothers Hoss and Joe in several episodes. A particularly funny episode featured a scene with Hoss as the Easter Bunny, enlisting Candy's assistance in getting into his rabbit costume. Canary's performance at suppressing a laugh at the spectacle was brilliant acting.
15. Wind

When Mark Slade departed the series, Wind was added to the family's ranch. Rudy Ramos portrayed this character of Native American heritage. He acted as a go-between in relations with the Apaches and was a particular favorite of Victoria Cannon.
