1. Which series is this episode from?

Answer: Third

It is the sixth episode in the third series. Series One was mainly the initial forming of the platoon, the second has many episodes not released on video and the final series is missing Walker (James Beck) who passed away after series four.

2. What rank is Mainwaring reduced to first of all?

Answer: Lieutenant

He is ordered to take a pip off each shoulder. A Captain has three pips, a Lieutenant has two, a 2nd Lieutenant has one.

3. Who played the character of Captain Bailey?

Answer: John Ringham

John Ringham also played Bracewell in the 1st series, but was written out due to his similarity to Arnold Ridely's character (Godfrey). Anthony Sagar played Drill Sergeant Gregory, Edward Sinclair plays the Verger and Colin Bean is Private Sponge.

4. What does Wilson buy from Walker that Mainwaring regards as being "for officers only"?

Answer: Beret

Wilson buys a dark coloured beret which Mainwaring takes a dislike to. Drill Sergeant Gregory also says that it's for officers only.

The platoon are insisting to see Mainwaring's badge of rank as he is not allowed to take the parade with it covered up. After hearing the news the platoon are so happy and excited that they forgot all about Mainwaring's badge of rank.

Answer: Frazer

He, in fact, requested a commission for himself. When Mainwaring was granted his commission Frazer was the first to congratulate him.

Wilson mistakes them for the Eastgate Platoon. Walker corrects him.

Jones took off his trousers because he was lying in an ants nest. After they had crawled up his leg he tried to flick them out by waving his trousers up and down.

He said this in the background following the defeat in the battle exercise by the Southgate Platoon.

Pike was ordered to run on the spot because he told the Drill Sergeant he was too delicate to go in the Navy, Walker was also ordered to because he laughed at Pike, Jones wasn't ordered to but he wanted to and Mainwaring was ordered to because he used to be an officer.
