Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Dad's Army" was set in which coastal town?

Answer: Walmington-On-Sea

Though fictional, Walmington-On-Sea is based in Sussex, England. The majority of scenes were shot in Norfolk and a museum paying homage to the series opened at Thetford Guildhall, which was also used as the Town Hall in the series.

Clacton, and Southend are both real towns on the South coast of England whilst Bridlington is a real coastal resort town in Yorkshire, northern England.
2. Which rank did Jones, played by Clive Dunn, hold throughout the majority of the series?

Answer: Lance Corporal

He was a lance corporal for the majority of the series but had stints as a sergeant and as a private. He was one of the most experienced soldiers in terms of active service and was always keen to get out his bayonet, hence the catchphrase "They don't like it up 'em!"

Sergeant is incorrect - this role is John Le Mesurier as Sgt Arthur Wilson.

Captain is incorrect - this role is Arthur Lowe as Captain Mainwaring.

Private is incorrect - there were a number of Privates, though Jones was always a step behind, he still ranked above them!
3. James Beck played the role of which character?

Answer: Walker

The answer is Walker. Private Joe Walker was the lovable yet cheeky guy, who could turn up late to parade but talk his way out of it.
He wouldn't always do things strictly by the book, but in a time of rationing, he knew who his friends were and pulled through for the troop on more than one occasion.
Unfortunately, James Beck died in 1973 following a fall at a charity event. This was part way through filming series six; it is a testament to "Dad's Army" and the fans that in fact the show went on for another three series, despite losing a character.
Incidentally, James Beck had also starred in the first two series of sitcom "Romany Jones" which ran from 1972. His character was written out and this continued for a further two series.
Beck was an established actor with previous roles in "Coronation Street" and "Dixon of Dock Green".
4. Which writing duo created "Dad's Army"?

Answer: David Croft and Jimmy Perry

The correct answer is David Croft and Jimmy Perry. Jimmy Perry initially seemed quite keen to take a role in front of the camera, even writing early scripts with himself in mind. At casting, Croft was able to talk him round, saying that he could remain more impartial and self-critical of the screenplay edits in his role as a writer/creator.

Galton & Simpson - incorrect - they are perhaps best known for sitcoms including "Steptoe & Son". However, Arthur Lowe did appear in *Car Along The Pass", a 1977 episode of "Galton & Simpson's Playhouse".
5. What was the occupation of Private Frazer?

Answer: Undertaker

Private James Frazer was an undertaker. Known for his pessimistic catchphrase, "We're doomed!", he could quickly redeem himself when the troop triumphed, by saying, "I never doubted it for a second!"

Jones was the Butcher so this is incorrect.

Mainwaring was the Bank Manager so this is incorrect.

Vet is incorrect - However, actor John Laurie does play a vet in the 1963 "Steptoe & Son" episode, "Wallah-Wallah Catsmeat" alongside Wilfrid Brambell and Harry H. Corbett.
6. Jon Pertwee played the Chief ARP Warden 'Hodges'.

Answer: False

This is false - It was played by BILL Pertwee.
As his iconic role in "Dad's Army", Bill's acting career included two "Carry On" films and he also appeared in the 1980s Channel 4 sitcom "Chance In A Million" alongside Brenda Blethyn and Simon Callow.

Jon Pertwee is incorrect - he is best known for "Doctor Who" and "Worzel Gummidge". Jon and Bill are distant relations.
7. In the episode "Branded," which of the characters gets told to leave the platoon, following information that he was a "conscientious objector"?

Answer: Private Godfrey

The correct answer is Private (Charles) Godfrey. It comes to light that despite his initial objections, Godfrey served at some of WWI's most notorious battles. He is reinstated with an apology!

Private Frazer is an incorrect answer but actor John Laurie served in WWI with the Honourable Artillery Company.

Sergeant Wilson is an incorrect answer - John Le Mesurier spent most of WWII in British India though his home was hit by a German bomb before departing for war in September 1940.

Private Sponge is played by actor Colin Bean in 76 episodes of "Dad's Army". He saw active service in Japan shortly after WWII. Other acting roles include one-offs in "Z-Cars" and "Hi-De-Hi" though Colin appeared in 13 episodes of "Potty Time with Michael Bentine" - a children's show starring Michael Bentine of "Goon Show" fame.
8. "Wait till his Reverence hears of this!" was a line commonly said by the Verger, often when the platoon needed to take over the Hall at short notice. What was the Verger's name?

Answer: Mr Yeatman

Maurice Yeatman first appeared as caretaker in series one, before taking his position as the Vicar's long-suffering Verger. Edward Sinclair Perry fully embraced this acting role which often required emotional facial expressions and put him at the brunt of slapstick action.
When Edward died in 1977, it signalled the end of "Dad's Army". Arthur Lowe spoke at his funeral and said "With the loss of Teddy, it is now quite clear that there will be no more".

Mr Williams is incorrect - Frank Williams played the Reverend.

Mr Snoad is incorrect - Harold Snoad was the director of a number of episodes of "Dad's Army". He later went on to work on "Keeping Up Appearances".

Mr Lavender is incorrect - Ian Lavender played Private Frank Pike and was the last surviving regular cast member of "Dad's Army". He appeared in 80 episodes and both "Dad's Army" feature films. His other credits include "Rising Damp", "Man About The House", "Yes, Minister", "Casualty" and "Eastenders".
9. Mild-mannered Sergeant Arthur Wilson, did his best to look out for his young nephew Private Pike. However, Pike's mother often worried and would complain to Captain Mainwaring. What was her first name?

Answer: Mavis

Mavis Pike was played by the wonderful Janet Davies.
However, Private Pike's mother was usually referred to as 'Mrs Pike'. She was initially portrayed as an overprotective mother, re-tying Pike's scarf and would complain to the Captain about keeping her son out late.
However, as the series went on, it seemed that there was far more to her relationship with "Uncle Arthur" than it first seemed.

Elizabeth was the name of Captain Mainwairing's wife. She was famously never seen on screen, though her voice could be heard in the episode "The Two and Half Feathers [1970]".

Dolly was the name of one of Private Godfrey's sisters (played by Amy Dalby). The other was Cissy (played by Kathleen Saintsbury).

Nobody by the name of Catherine appeared in the series, though Catherine Zeta-Jones appeared in the later film alongside Toby Jones. (In my view the 1971 film, also entitled "Dad's Army" but with the original cast is worth revisiting if you have never seen it.)
10. Leader of the Eastgate platoon, Captain _____ became a bit of a thorn in Mainwaring's side.

Answer: Square

Captain Square appears in eight episodes and notably pronounces Mainwaring's name "Main-wearing" (as opposed to Mannering). Played by Geoffrey Lumsden.
