Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who wrote the signature tune for 'Dad's Army'?

Answer: Jimmy Perry

The signature tune of 'Dad's Army' written by Jimmy Perry was the final recording to be made by Wartime Comic and former Crazy Gang member Bud Flanagan in early 1968. The song was frequently mistaken for a genuine wartime song by the show's viewers, although it hadn't actually been written until Jimmy Perry was developing the idea for his new television series.
2. Which movie gave the inspiration for the first script 'The Fighting Tigers'?

Answer: Oh! Mr Porter

Jimmy Perry gained his much needed inspiration from the Will Hay movie, 'Oh! Mr Porter', which was being screened that Sunday afternoon. One of the movie's strengths was the wonderful balance of characters: a pompous man, a boy and an old man.
3. Which character did Jimmy Perry originally envisage Arthur Lowe playing?

Answer: Sergeant Wilson

When writing the original script Jimmy Perry wrote 'It's hard to imagine anyone other than Messrs Lowe, Le Mesurier, Laurie et al playing the roles', but Jimmy initially saw Arthur Lowe playing Sergeant Wilson and Robert Dorning, who later appeared as a bank inspector in the episode 'Something Nasty In The Vault' as Captain Mainwaring.
4. Which character did Jimmy Perry initially intend to play himself?

Answer: Private Walker

Jimmy wanted comic actor Arthur English to play Joe Walker, even though he had originally wanted to play the part himself. 'I wrote Walker for myself, but Michael Mills and David Croft didn't think it was a good idea. Sadly, I was in no position to argue.'
5. In the first episode of season one ('The Man and The Hour') Mainwaring appoints himself commander of the Invasion Committee, with Wilson second-in-command. Volunteers are enrolled at the church hall. Who is the first person to be enrolled?

Answer: James Frazer

MAINWARING: Get the first man in WILSON: Oh, very well. (looks out the door) Would you mind stepping this way, please? MAINWARING: Wilson, Wilson, come here, come here. I intend to mould those men out there into an aggressive fighting {unit;} I'm going to lead them, command them and inspire them to be ruthless killers, and I'm not going to get very far if you invite them to step this way, am I? Quick march is the order. WILSON: I'm sorry, sir. Quick march FRAZER: There's no point, I'm already here
6. Until recently only one episode of season two survived, the other five been wiped and never broadcast after 1969. In 2001 two episodes were handed to the BBC that had been found in a skip at Elstree film studios in the 1970s by someone who was working there. One of these episodes is called 'Operation Kilt', what is the other one called?

Answer: The Battle Of Godfrey's Cottage

On finding the two missing episodes David Croft said: 'This is excellent news. I always wanted my shows to be kept, but in those days videotapes were usually re-used, and that's what happened to five episodes from series two. For years I have tried to work out how to get them back and I even did a television appeal a few years ago.

It's been a long time, but I always knew they would turn up some day. Dad's Army is still finding new fans among younger viewers, and I think the public will be as happy as I am if they get a chance to see these two episodes.'
7. Edward Sinclair's character ('The Verger') was originally portrayed as a caretaker, in which episode did he first don clerical attire?

Answer: Episode 16, The Bullet Is Not For Firing

'The Bullet Is Not For Firing' - The platoon expels all their ammo in one night at a passing enemy plan. A court inquiry is held, upon Captain Mainwaring's insistence, into the use of 75 rounds of ammo. But proceedings are farcical and peppered with constant interruptions, especially when Jones brings the ceiling down!
8. The Walmington-On-Sea bandstand was erected to commemorate who's visit?

Answer: Queen Victoria

The bandstand was erected to commemorate the visit of Queen Victoria in 1891. During the visit Jones met Queen Victoria and she told him he reminded her of her dear Albert, Jones replied by saying she reminded him of his dear mum. Hence the expression we are not amused. (Big Guns)
9. In the episode 'Menace From The Deep', what food did Sergeant Wilson bring?

Answer: Acid Drops

After Pike ties the boat to the telephone line with all the food in, the only food they are left with is Sergeant Wilson's Acid Drops.
10. What reason was given for Jimmy Becks character Private Walker's absence from parade while he was in hospital?

Answer: He had gone to London to do a deal

David Croft arrived at the studio on Sunday the 22 July 1973 for the recording of 'The Recruit' to learn that Jimmy Beck had been taken to hospital. Perry and Croft ran though the script to see if they could film the episode without his studio appearance.

There were scenes in which he appeared on film and decided that when it came to the parade scene, a note would be left in his place saying that he had gone 'To the Smoke', which was the Cockney way of saying London. At that stage it was hoped that Jimmy would return in time for the next series but he died about three weeks later from a burst Pancreas.
