This department store sets the stage as the first place where Rose and the Doctor meet. After the mannequins start to attack Rose, she is grabbed and taken to safety by the Doctor. She thinks the mannequins are really students, but she quickly discovers that is not the case.

This arm is the cause of the forthcoming trouble for Rose. Bringing it home with her, she doesn't realize that it could still come alive. Having her boyfriend throw it out doesn't do much, as it sneaks its way back into her apartment. The result is not all bad, however, as it brings the Doctor back to her, and started the rest of the stories.

Jackie seems the typical loving mother: wanting the best for her daughter, but not necessarily to keep her home all the time. She particularly wants the best for her daughter in terms of receiving compensation for being almost blown up!

The Nestene Consciousness, when finally located at the end of the episode, appears to be a giant blob of orange goo. The Doctor, with his seemingly characteristic trust, tries to reason with the Consciousness before it has its plastic henchmen attack him. However, with Rose to save the day, it all turns out all right in the end.

With much better special effects than the original series, Mickey's fingers get stuck to the garbage can and seem to melt into it. That is, until it flips him over and throws him inside. This allows the Nestene Consciousness to create a plastic replica of Mickey, to try and pry some information about the Doctor out of Rose.

Although he seems like a bit of a nutter to Rose and Mickey, she goes to talk to him anyway, successfully discovering a little bit more about the elusive Doctor.

The Doctor could not figure out where the Consciousness could be transmitting from, something that big could simply not be that well hidden! It only took Rose a minute, though, to figure it out, as she was staring right at it. The Doctor, turning to see what she was looking at about three times, took a little bit longer for the sight to click.

Although Rose had already done some mourning for him (still a little shocked with everything, however), Mickey is found in the residence of the Nestene Consciousness, where he had been kept alive in order to maintain his replica.

Rose, realizing that the Doctor was in danger, decides to put to use the bronze medal she had received for gymnastics in her under-7. She takes a hanging metal chain from the wall, swings down to where the mannequins and the Doctor are, and kicks the mannequin (the one who is holding the anti-plastic, that which can kill the Nestene Consciousness) into the orange blob and effectively kills the Consciousness, as the anti-plastic spills onto it.

Answer: that the TARDIS can travel through time
