Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these people was based upon (and named after) a real-life person?

Answer: Saitou Hajime

The real Saitou Hajime was also the captain of the third division of the Shinsengumi. Another character that was based on a real-life person is Sagara Souzou, captain of the Sekihoutai. The other characters may have been somewhat based off of other real-life people, but they were not named the same.
2. Kamiya Kaoru wields a bokken rather than a real sword. As her student, does Myojin Yahiko do the same?

Answer: No

Yahiko is still an apprentice, and therefore uses a kendo stick instead of a true bokken (wooden sword). A kendo stick is a rounded stick with a blunt metal tip. This weapon is more commonly referred to in "Rurouni Kenshin" as a shinai.
3. Which of these is not a name that Kenshin has gone by?

Answer: Shishou

"Shishou" means the same as "Sensei" and is a slightly less formal way of addressing a teacher... therefore it's what Kenshin calls Hiko Seijurou. "Sessha" means "this unworthy one" and is what Kenshin started calling himself when he became a wanderer. Shinta is Kenshin's birth name before Seijurou changed it, and Battousai was Kenshin's nickname during the Bakumatsu.
4. When did Shishio Makoto take over Kenshin's role?

Answer: When Kenshin started openly fighting the Shinsengumi

Shishio Makoto's work was done in the shadows, while Kenshin worked against the Shinsengumi out in the open. Because of this, Kenshin never even knew Shishio existed until much later. When the revolution was over, some of Shishio's missions were so bad that just mentioning them could bring the Meiji government to its knees. To prevent Shishio from using this knowledge to hold the government under his thumb, they had him shot and burned to death.

But Shishio survived the fire and lived to try and get revenge.
5. What is so unusual about Kamatari?

Answer: He's often mistaken for a girl

A funny scene shows Yahiko comparing Misao and Kaoru to Kamatari... then they find out she's really a he.
6. What finally convinced Kenshin to hand over his money to Misao when they met on the way to Kyoto?

Answer: She took his sword

Kenshin wanted to keep what little money he had. He bluffed and told her she could have his sword instead, acting like he didn't care about it much. She called his bluff and took it, and Kenshin frantically handed her his money. A really cute scene ensues where Kenshin hugs his sword like a well-loved pet.
7. What is the name of Kenshin's son?

Answer: Kenji

Kenji looks just like a mini-Kenshin. He loves pulling Kenshin's hair and climbing up on the roof (then he realizes he can't get back down). He doesn't really like his dad, who also refuses to teach his sword style to Kenji. Kenji does, however, inherit the sakabatou.
8. At the end of "Rurouni Kenshin" the manga, which of these characters isn't married?

Answer: Takani Megumi

Kenshin marries Kaoru (and who DIDN'T see that coming?), Yahiko marries Tsubame (ditto with this), and Saitou was married to a lady named Tokio before we even meet him.
9. How does Kenshin eventually die?

Answer: Tuberculosis

Kenshin's death is sad. It's from an OAV called "Seisou Hen". Another war brews, and Kenshin leaves for it, telling Kaoru that when he comes back, he wants to be known as "Shinta", which was his birth name. When he returns home, he's greeted happily by Kaoru, but his disease has gotten worse and he dies in Kaoru's arms.

A sad part before this is when Kenshin is in America and is too weak to get home on his own. Sanosuke shows up and escorts his ailing friend to the boat.
10. In the end of "Rurouni Kenshin", what does Sanosuke do?

Answer: Travels the world

A short manga shows a reunion of the gang. Aoshi, Misao, Yahiko, Tsubame, Kaoru, Kenshin, and Megumi show up. Saitou is elsewhere, but Aoshi reports that he's "doing fine", and they receive a letter from Sano telling of his travels around the world.
