Answer: A con artist

We see Sawyer at work when he seduces a woman and "lets slip" some information about a deal he's doing. She then tells her husband, who wants to invest some of his money too as they think it's a sure-fire winner. What then normally happens is Sawyer just takes the money and runs.

This time, we see a flashback where a little boy appears when Sawyer visits the victim's house and suddenly he can't go through with the deal. Is there more to him than just a sexy trickster? Much later in the series, Sawyer is hacking down wood for the raft and Jack guesses that he used to be a lumberjack.

We find out that Sawyer maybe isn't as bad as he pretends he is. We presume at first that the letter was written to Sawyer by a little boy whose life was shattered by one of Sawyer's cons. The father of the family shot his wife and killed himself when the con was discovered, leaving the boy all alone.

As Kate is reading it, however, she notices that the letter has never been sent to anybody. The letter was written by Sawyer himself, when he was young, to the man who had blown his family apart. Sayid treasures the photograph of a woman he is in love with and Jack keeps the key to the Marshal's gun case around his neck.

He took the name Sawyer as he found out that that was the name of the man who had conned his family. He was in trouble and owed a lot of money but on the way to finding out where and who the real Sawyer was, our Sawyer gradually turned into the very man he hated, becoming a con man himself. Josh Holloway plays Sawyer. Jack (Shephard) and John (Locke) are other main characters on the show.

Shannon is having an asthma attack and Boone thinks Sawyer has some refills for her inhaler. Sawyer does not want to give them up so Jack and Sayid end up tying him to a tree and torturing him. Finally, he says he'll tell Kate where they are if she gives him a kiss.

She does (the lucky gal!) and Sawyer says he never had them in the first place. She believes him but the men don't and Sawyer ends up nearly dying when Sayid cuts an artery in his arm. Shannon's asthma attack is then cured by Sun bringing her some eucalyptus.

He called Jin "Sulu", after the Star Trek guy presumably. I made the others up. Sawyer hardly ever calls anyone by their actual name, a trait I find endearing and really funny most of the time, but that probably annoys all the other islanders, especially Hurley who gets called "Lardo" and "Pork Pie" amongst other things!

It seems that Hibbs cheated Sawyer out of some money. To repay him, he has information of the man Sawyer has been chasing. This is why Sawyer was in Australia, but as we find out, the man is not who he thinks he is.

During this episode, Sawyer has been harassed by one of the island's boars. It has destroyed his tent and scattered his stuff everywhere, leaving everyone else's untouched. Locke thinks maybe it was the spirit of someone Sawyer did wrong. Turns out it just might be!

The Minister's name was the Honorable Warren Truss. It was this that ultimately got Sawyer on the fateful flight. It seems no-one found out about him killing a man.

Sawyer is steering the raft and is, of course, reading all the notes the islanders put in the bottle for their friends and family. Walt complains, saying they're private, but Sawyer says they've got to keep themselves entertained. Michael can't work out why Sawyer's on the raft, saying he must either want to be a hero or he wants to die. Sawyer replies "I ain't no hero, Mike." It seems he doesn't have much to live for any more.
Gazoo refers to the Great Gazoo from the cartoon "The Flintstones".

Oopsie-daisy! The radar had picked up a ship but it was about to go out of range. They only had one flare and Sawyer and Michael were arguing over whether to shoot it or not. Michael didn't want to but he was the only one. Unfortunately, the boat that came was not full of rescuers, but "the others" that Danielle had told them about. They took Walt and blew up the raft, but worst of all, they shot Sawyer who fell into the sea! I just hope he resurfaces in season 2!
