Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In series 10, which former ballerina replaced Alesha Dixon as a judge?

Answer: Darcey Bussell

When Alesha Dixon left 'Strictly Come Dancing' at the end of series 9 to join 'Britain's Got Talent', it was announced that Darcey Bussell, a former principal dancer with the Royal Ballet, was replacing her on the judging panel. She had already had a taste of being in the hot seat as she had appeared as a guest judge on the show in series 7 (2009) from the quarter finals onward. Darcey is considered to be one of the greatest ballerinas ever to come out of Britain and was made principal dancer with the Royal Ballet at the tender age of 20. She retired from ballet in 2007.

At the launch show for series 10, Darcey performed an American Smooth with Ian Waite, a former professional dancer on 'Strictly Come Dancing'.
2. Who co-hosted the results show with Tess Daly in series 10?

Answer: Claudia Winkelman

Although Sir Bruce Forsyth and Tess Daly once again presented the main show in series 10, Claudia Winkelman returned to co-host the results show with Daly. Claudia first became involved with 'Strictly Come Dancing' in 2004 when she began presenting 'Strictly Come Dancing: It Takes Two', a companion show to the main competition show.

She retained this role through to 2010, but could not take on the role again the following year as she had just given birth. She then moved to join Daly on the results show.

Her quirky style and sense of fun have made her a firm favourite with both audiences and contestants alike.
3. What was the name of the segment in the results show where the judges discussed selected clips from the main show?

Answer: Len's Lens

Named after long serving head judge Len Goodman, Len's Lens was a segment that appeared in each results show, where the judges were invited to discuss specially selected video clips from the previous night's show. Len's Lens was introduced by Claudia Winkelman and was the source of much hilarity and fun-poking at both the contestants and the judges themselves. My personal favourite clip from the season was the one which showed judge, Bruno Tonioli, getting so excited that he fell off his chair and landed in an ungainly heap on the floor.

His face as the clip was shown on Len's Lens was a picture!
4. Who were the first couple to be eliminated from the show in series 10?

Answer: Johnny Ball and Iveta Lukosiute

Veteran TV presenter Johnny Ball who, at the age of 74, was the oldest celebrity to take part in series 10 and his partner Iveta Lukosiute, were the first couple to be eliminated from the show. Ball's 'Strictly' experience did not get off to a good start when his original partner, Aliona Vilani, the previous year's winner, was injured during training and was unable to continue. Iveta was drafted in to replace her but the couple failed to impress either the judges or the viewers.

They found themselves in the bottom two and lost the first dance off when the judges voted to save Richard Arnold and Erin Boag. Johnny is the father of Zoe Ball who replaced Claudia Winkelman as the presenter of 'Strictly Come Dancing: It Takes Two'.
5. The ex-wife of one of the world's best known rock stars, which former supermodel and actress was paired with Anton de Beke for series 10?

Answer: Jerry Hall

A former supermodel and the ex-wife of Mick Jagger of The Rolling Stones, Jerry Hall was paired with long time 'Strictly Come Dancing' professional, Anton du Beke. Anton had appeared in all previous nine seasons of the show but had never won it. Unfortunately, series 10 did not change his luck as he and Hall were the second couple to leave the show.

They were eliminated in Hollywood week where they had performed a quickstep to 'Mrs Robinson' from 'The Graduate', a role that Hall had performed on Broadway.

The drawling Texan's teasing of du Beke provided some most entertaining moments before their departure.
6. Which Welsh mezzo-soprano made a guest appearance on the show both as a singer and as a dancer?

Answer: Katherine Jenkins

Katherine Jenkins, the Welsh mezzo-soprano, was the guest star on the results show during the semi-final week where she sang a sultry version of the Christmas classic 'Santa Baby'. She then returned to the floor as a dancer. Katherine had taken part in season 14 of 'Dancing with the Stars', the American version of 'Strictly Come Dancing' and, together with her professional partner, Mark Ballas, took the runner-up spot behind NFL star, Donald Driver. Katherine and Mark entertained the 'Strictly' audience with an energetic and accomplished jive.

Here is another piece of 'Strictly' trivia for you. Katherine was once engaged to Gethin Jones, the TV presenter who finished in third place in series 5 of 'Strictly Come Dancing'.
7. Which member of the group 'Girls Aloud' was paired with Pasha Kovalev for this series?

Answer: Kimberley Walsh

Kimberley Walsh, or "Nimble Kimble" to quote the nickname given to her early in the season by head judge, Len Goodman, was paired with Russian professional dancer, Pasha Kovalev, for the series. A singer and actress, Kimberley was one of the five members of the girl group 'Girls Aloud' that enjoyed great success after being formed during the reality show, 'Popstars: The Rivals' in 2002. Kimberley and Pasha were the first couple of the series to score a perfect 40 points from the judges. They received it in the quarter finals for their Dance Fusion combination of cha-cha-cha and tango to 'It's Raining Men'. Dance Fusion, borrowed from the US show 'Dancing with the Stars,' was a new addition to 'Strictly Come Dancing' this season. Couples had to blend two different dance styles into one routine using one piece of music.

The couple made the final which gave Pasha the distinction of being the second male professional dancer on the show to make two consecutive finals equalling the record of Ian Waite. He had reached the final and been runner up with Chelsee Healey in season 9. Kimberley and Pasha finished as joint runners-up to the eventual winners. This meant that Pasha had been the runner-up in his first two seasons on the show.
8. Which former England captain exchanged the cricket field for the dance floor when he took part in series 10?

Answer: Michael Vaughan

When he exchanged the cricket field for the dance floor, former England batsman and cricket captain, Michael Vaughan, had some big boots to fill. Two former England cricketers had already won the glitter ball trophy, Darren Gough in series 3 and Mark Ramprakash the following year.

He was paired with Australian professional, Natalie Lowe, for the series and he struggled initially, especially in the Latin dances where his lack of timing was obvious. The couple found themselves in the dance-off as early as week 3 but were saved by the judges.

He fared much better in the ballroom dances. In the 'Dancing through the Decades' week , which was broadcast live from the Wembley Arena, the couple closed the show with an American Smooth to "New York New York".

They received their highest score of 35 and a standing ovation from the crowd. Unfortunately, Michael's Latin dances continued to let him down and, after dancing the samba in week 9, the couple once again found themselves in the bottom two.

They were eliminated after losing the dance-off to Westlife's Nicky Byrne and his partner, Karen Hauer.
9. Which West End and Broadway actress, who was partnered by James Jordan, drew criticism from viewers about her previous dance training?

Answer: Denise van Outen

Denise van Outen, the actress, singer and TV presenter, was partnered with James Jordan for this series and was one of the early favourites to take the title. Denise started performing at an early age and, in 2001, played the role of Roxie Hart in the musical, 'Chicago', in the West End and again on Broadway in 2002.

Her participation in 'Strictly Come Dancing' did not go down well in all quarters though, as it was felt that her previous dance training gave her an unfair advantage over the other celebrities.

Despite being on top of the judges' leader board seven times including four consecutive top spots, the couple twice found themselves in the bottom two and having to dance off as viewers did not support them. On both occasions they were saved by the judges and made it through to the final.

It was the first time in seven seasons that Jordan had made the final. They ended the show as joint runners-up to the eventual winners.
10. Which couple were the winners of series 10 and lifted the glitter ball trophy?

Answer: Louis Smith and Flavia Cacace

Despite a rather slow start to the competition where they drew mixed comments from the judges, Olympic gymnast, Louis Smith, and his partner, Flavia Cacace, won the final and lifted the much coveted glitter ball trophy as the season's champions. It was Flavia's second appearance in the final but her first win. She and her then partner, Matt d' Angelo, had lost the series 5 final to Alesha Dixon and Matthew Cutler.

Although they only topped the judges' leader board twice during the series, the couple proved popular with the viewers and never appeared in the bottom two throughout the competition. They were awarded a perfect score of 40 for their show dance in the final, finally nabbing that elusive 10 from "mean" judge, Craig Revel-Horwood. Louis, who was the silver medallist in the pommel horse at the 2012 London Olympics, joked after his win that "I can finally say that I won something in the year 2012!".
