Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. George Clooney
Answer: Booker Brooks
In the early days of the original "Roseanne", Roseanne and sister Jackie worked for Wellman Plastics, one of the few major industries in Lanford. From 1988 to 1991, George Clooney played the foreman of the company, Booker Brooks. There was a time when Booker and Jackie were dating. Clooney worked on "Roseanne" before he became a big movie star, and even before the hit show "ER".
2. Estelle Parsons
Answer: Beverly Harris
In 1989 we first meet Roseanne and Jackie's mother, an annoying, whiny passive-aggressive parent, played to the hilt by Estelle Parsons. Her shrill voice and conservative views drove Dan and Roseanne crazy. Prior to her role on the TV sitcom, Estelle Parsons made quite an impact in the 1967 film "Bonnie and Clyde", where she played Buck Barrow's girlfriend.
3. Glenn Quinn
Answer: Mark Healy
Mark Healy was the "bad boy" with whom Becky fell in love and later married. The role was supposed to be for one episode but lasted for seven years, and through two Beckys (i.e., Alicia Goranson and Sarah Chalke). Glenn Quinn (1970-2002) played Mark, and was also Allen Doyle in the TV spinoff "Angel." In 2002, Glenn died at a friend's house from a heroin overdose.
4. Sandra Bernhard
Answer: Nancy Bartlett
Sandra Bernhard first became known through her acerbic stand-up comedy act in the late 1990s. She joined "Roseanne" in 1991 as Roseanne's gay friend, Nancy Bartlett (no relation to Jed Bartlet). Nancy was one of TV's first openly gay characters but, strangely, she wound up marrying Arnie Thomas, played by Roseanne's former real-life husband, Tom Arnold.
5. Martin Mull
Answer: Leon Carp
During the course of the show, Roseanne Conner had a lot of jobs. At one point, from seasons 3-9, she worked at Rodbell's Luncheonette as a waitress. Her boss at the luncheonette was Leon Carp, who we find out is a homosexual (that story line runs through a lot of episodes and characters). Leon's life style and political views are a foil for Roseanne.
He is played by long time actor Martin Mull.
6. Shelley Winters
Answer: Nana Mary
Nana Mary was Roseanne and Jackie's grandmother, and Bev's mother. Unlike Bev, Nana Mary was 'tough-as-nails' and no-nonsense. The role was played by Shelley Winters (1920-2006), who had been a sexy ingenue in films in the 1950s. Winters won Academy Awards for acting in "The Diary of Anne Frank" (1959) and "A Patch of Blue" (1965). She also appeared in "The Poseidon Adventure" in 1972.
7. Michael O'Keefe
Answer: Fred Oakland
I had to do some research to find out the last name of Fred who was Jackie's husband and the father of Andy. Fred appeared in seasons 6 through 8. He was a mechanic who worked with Dan through whom he met Jackie. Fred and Jackie had a one night stand which turned into a baby, a wedding and, subsequently, a divorce. Michael O'Keefe was in the Academy Award Winning 2014 film "Birdman".
8. Morgan Fairchild
Answer: Marla
Born Patsy Ann McClenny, Morgan Fairchild has been starring on TV since her debut on the soap opera "Search for Tomorrow" in 1974. She moved on to the popular night-time soap opera "Dallas" before taking the lead on "Flamingo Road" in 1980. In 1992 Morgan played Marla, the girlfriend of Nancy Bartlett during her 'lesbian phase'.
After that, Fairchild played Chandler Bing's mother on "Friends".
9. Ned Beatty
Answer: Ed Conner
While Roseanne's extended family was often on display on the program, we don't get to see much of Dan's early family. In seasons 1-3 and 6, we are introduced to Dan's father, the affable traveling salesman, Ed Conner. Everyone gets along with Ed except his son; they always seem to be at each other's throats. Ned Beatty played Ed.
He was also one of the stars in the 1982 film "Deliverance".
10. Meagen Fay
Answer: Kathy Bowman
Meagen Fay has appeared on stage, screen and television. In 1991 and 1992, Megan played Kathy Bowman who, along with her husband Jerry and her son Todd, moved next door to the Conners. The Bowmans had moved from Chicago, and Kathy made it clear she looked down on the Conners; Roseanne was no fan of Kathy either. Megan Fay's resume includes "Magnolia" (1999) and "Malcolm in the Middle".
11. Tom Arnold
Answer: Arnie Thomas
Arnie Thomas was one of Dan's poker playing buddies who met Nancy Bartlett through the Conners. The two dated, married and divorced (the cycle of life?). Arnie appeared in 19 episodes from season 2 to 5. Tom Arnold played Arnie. He was married to Roseanne in real-life from 1990 to 1994. Arnold was in the 1994 film "True Lies" and on TV in "The Jackie Thomas Show".
12. Traci Lords
Answer: Stacy Flagler
In later episodes of "Roseanne", Roseanne opens the Lunchbox, a diner which serves loose meat sandwiches. Stacy Flagler played one of the waitresses from 1992 to 1995. She was a buxom sexpot over whom Mark Healy and his brother David (Johnny Galecki) fought. Traci Lords played Stacy, but her real life as an actress in X-rated films in the early 1980s brought her far more renown.
13. Joseph Gordon-Levitt
Answer: George
One of film star Joseph Gordon-Levitt's early roles was as George on "Roseanne". George was a friend of DJ's and appeared from 1993 to 1995. The interesting thing about George was...absolutely nothing. He was talkative, annoying and boring. Gordon-Levitt went on to star on the TV show "3rd Rock from the Sun", and in films like "Inception", "500 Days of Summer" and "Don Jon".
14. Sally Kirkland
Answer: Barbara Healy
In Season 5, for only two episodes, we get to meet Barbara Healy, the alcoholic, abusive mother of Mark and David. When Roseanne finds out that Barbara treated her sons like garbage, she invites David to live with the Conners. Sally Kirkland played Barbara Healy. Sally started acting in Off-Broadway in 1963, and continued to work on TV and in films like "Anna" where she was nominated for an Oscar.
15. Jay O. Sanders
Answer: Norbert "Ziggy" Walsh
Norbert "Ziggy" Walsh was an old friend of Dan's, a free-spirited biker who comes back to Lanford to visit Dan and go into the motorcycle business with him. But the lure of the road beckons and "Ziggy" is only around for two episodes in seasons 2 and 3. Ziggy is played by actor Jay O. Sanders. Sanders has been on TV in "Law and Order" and "Criminal Intent" and in films such as "JFK".
