Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. There are differences aplenty between the new "Battlestar Galactica" and the original '70s version. One of the most obvious evolutions is that Galactica's resident hotshot pilot, Lieutenant Starbuck, is a woman. Starbuck is merely her call-sign though. What is the character's actual name?

Answer: Kara Thrace

Both Starbuck and Boomer, who were played by Dirk Benedict and Herbert Jefferson Jr. in the original series, are cast as females in the new "BSG". As the new Starbuck, actress Katee Sackhoff doesn't miss a beat in her portrayal of the flirtatious and debonair cigar-smoking top gun of Galactica's Viper corps.
2. Galactica's stoic commander Bill Adama is the sole reason his ship was one of the few battlestars in the entire fleet to survive the near genocide of the human race. What strategic technological anomaly does he advocate that allowed the Galactica to escape the initial attack by its tyrannical Cylon enemies?

Answer: Its computers were not networked to the fleet's mainframe

"Battlestar Galactica" marks the second time the venerable Edward James Olmos has been onboard a hit program in the 10 p.m. timeslot on a Friday night. In addition to his role as Commander Adama, Olmos ruled the Friday-night airwaves as Lt. Martin Castillo on the '80s classic "Miami Vice".
3. Because nearly the entire population of the 12 colonies was wiped out at the hands of the Cylons, Laura Roslin is named president of the colonial fleet when it is discovered all her 42 predecessors in the chain of command have perished. What office did President Roslin hold before the outbreak of war?

Answer: Secretary of Education

Laura Roslin, played by Mary McDonnell, is an entirely new character introduced in the new "BSG". McDonnell is most recognized for her portrayal of First Lady Marilyn Whitmore in the sci-fi epic "Independence Day".
4. Who was the raptor navigator that gave up their seat to save genius scientist Gaius Baltar from being stranded on his home colony of Caprica?

Answer: Lt. Helo

The existence of Baltar was a bit perplexing in the '70s TV series, since he was executed by the Cylons during the feature-length film which served as a preface to the show. No explanation was offered as to how he survived the cinematic beheading. He just mysteriously resurfaced in TV land to rule the Cylon army.
5. From what disease does Col. Saul Tigh not so secretly suffer?

Answer: Alcoholism

Another drastic evolution of the new "BSG" is that Cylons can emulate human form. Throughout season 1, two characters very close to the top tier of Galactica's chain-of-command are implicated as possible Cylon agents. One is Tigh's wife, Ellen Tigh. The other is Commander Adama. Of course, they were both implicated by Cylon agents. And since Cylons are notorious liars, it can not be confirmed that either are Cylons.
6. Who believes they have a Cylon computer chip implanted in their brain?

Answer: Gaius Baltar

The chip in the brain is all Baltar. Fans of classic "Battlestar" will recognize disgruntled terrorist turned politician Tom Zarek, who is portrayed by Richard Hatch. Hatch, of course, played the earnestly moralistic Apollo in the original series.
7. What is the call-sign of the Commander of the Air Group, a.k.a. the CAG, who captains Galactica's squadron of Viper pilots?

Answer: Apollo

Like Starbuck, the name Apollo is also a mere call-sign. The character's name is Lee Adama, son of Commander Bill Adama, whom he has to thank for the sportiest head of hair in the fleet.
8. On what planet is the Tomb of Athena located?

Answer: Kobol

Within the "BSG" mythology, Kobol is said to be the mustard seed of human life in the universe. It is from Kobol that humans branched out to 13 planets; the 12 colonies represented by the signs of the zodiac, along with a distant shining planet known as Earth.
9. Before the war, Galactica was scheduled for decommission after which, the old girl was to be converted into what?

Answer: A museum

Among the memorabilia already delivered to Galactica were artifacts such as a deactivated Cylon and a retired classic Viper which viewers may have recognized from '70s "Galactica". Once the war begins, the retired Viper is drafted back into active duty due to the shortage of fighter planes in the fleet.
10. What is the favorite four-letter word used by Galactica's crew?

Answer: Frak

The foul-mouthed fleet of the new "BSG" has found a few more creative uses for its favorite curse-word, often conjugating it as "fraked-up", "mother-fraker", or my personal favorite "Are you out of your fraking mind?". The '70s Galacticans oft used another swear word, felgercarb, though this compound curse has yet to find its way into the new "BSG" lexicon.
