Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When Annelle came to Truvy's Beauty Spot to interview for a job, she admitted she was staying at a boarding house owned by whom?

Answer: Ruth Robeline

Truvy referred to Ruth as a "troubled, twisted soul", just like in the original film. But, this time the conversation happened as Annelle worked on her hair instead of when the pair was taking old magazines out to the trash. In this conversation, Ruth had lost her son in Iraq instead of Vietnam.

Jill Scott played Truvy and Adepero Oduye played Annelle. Jill also starred in "Why Did I Get Married" and "Why Did I Get Married Too". Adepero previously starred in an amazing film called "Pariah" and received numerous award nominations for her performance.
2. What illness was Shelby suffering with in this movie?

Answer: Diabetes

Just as in the first movie, Shelby had suffered with diabetes since her childhood and her mother worried about her non-stop. Condola Rashad played Shelby. Condola is the daughter of Phylicia Rashad, who played Clairee. Many fans of the original movie will remember that Julia Roberts played the original Shelby in 1989, and then went on to become a world famous film star.
3. Which couple was set to be married at the start of the film?

Answer: Shelby and Jackson

It was just before their scheduled wedding, and Shelby was trying to give Jackson an out. Her doctor has advised her against becoming pregnant due to her chronic kidney disease. He told her that they could adopt babies by the dozens if need be, and that the gaming system alone was worth getting married.

In the original, that conversation had taken place inside Shelby's bathroom and bedroom, and Jackson had said that the VCR alone was enough to get married. Tory Kittles played Jackson in this remake. "Sons of Anarchy" fans may remember him as the leader of a rival outlaw gang, whose name was Laroy.
4. Drum and Ouiser were fighting over the ownership of a magnolia tree.

Answer: True

The scene was close to identical in the TV movie. Drum was trying to get birds out of the trees in his backyard, and Ouiser came over to complain about the affect gunshots were having on her dog. She spotted the flowers from the magnolia tree and claimed they belonged to her, while Drum stated that the judge had not decided whose tree that it was exactly. Tom Skerritt and Shirley MacLaine played the parts in 1989, and Alfre Woodard and Afemo Omilami starred in the 2012 version.
5. This character revealed to her pals that her nephew had come out of the closet and told his parents that he was a gay man.

Answer: Clairee

In another scene almost identical to the original, Clairee told the ladies at Truvy's that her nephew Marshall had revealed to his parents he had a brain tumor and had been given six months to live. Then, he admitted he was only joking and that he was just gay.

He said that all men had accent lighting (called track lighting in the original), and were named either Mark, Rick or Steve. Just a bit later Ouiser arrived and raved about her new accent lighting, which had been recommended to her by her nephew Steve. That caused the ladies to all giggle.

There had been no mention in this TV movie about Marshall's sister Nancy Beth Marmillion being dethroned as Miss Merry Christmastime due to an "unfortunate hotel incident". Janine Turner played Nancy Beth in the original.
6. Who announced Shelby's pregnancy to a room full of friends during a Christmas party?

Answer: Drum

Shelby had to tell Drum and M'Lynn about her pregnancy separately. M'Lynn was upset about the risk Shelby was taking with her life, but Shelby was excited. She promised to be very careful and had excellent doctors on her side. It was Drum who reassured M'Lynn about this, a scene not in the original film. He later announced the baby at the Christmas party, just like in the first movie.
7. Were the events of Jack Jr.'s birth seen in this 2012 remake?

Answer: Yes

Shelby was seen in labor in the hospital and then a newborn Jack was seen afterward. Shelby handed the baby to M'Lynn in the hospital room. Later, Jackson was seen thanking M'Lynn for giving Shelby a kidney and swearing that he had not strong armed Shelby into getting pregnant. M'Lynn knew they'd tried adoption, as Shelby had told her that her own medical history kept precluding them from being good adoptive candidates.
8. "Shelby has been driving nails up her arm." Whose quote was this?

Answer: M'Lynn

Truvy saw Shelby's arms covered in large needle marks, and said it looked like she'd been driving nails into her arm. Shelby asked her mom if they should tell everyone what was going on, and M'Lynn offered the quote above. The same quote was spoken by Sally Field in the original.

Shelby told the ladies the doctor was trying to strengthen her veins. Dialysis, the process of removing toxins from the blood, does exactly that, it strengthens your veins.
9. Who donated a kidney to Shelby in order to save her life and get her off of dialysis?

Answer: M'Lynn

M'Lynn said their entire family had been tested for a match, but she was the closet to Shelby. Shelby said that M'Lynn's end of the surgery was worse than her own, and that her mother would need to have two ribs removed in order for the doctor to reach her kidney. Julia Roberts' Shelby said her M'Lynn would have to be practically "sawed in half" in the 1989 film.

In the 2012 TV update, there was a scene not shown in the original. Shelby broke down in the hospital and begged her mom not to have the surgery. M'Lynn just explained that she felt lucky, she'd gotten to give her child life twice. Louie, the son of Spud and Truvy, was not seen or mentioned in any way during this remake.
10. Which of these choices did NOT happen during the final portions of the 2012 movie?

Answer: Annelle went into labor during an Easter celebration.

Shelby lapsed into a diabetic coma, and later died after being taken off of life support. She went into a coma the day of Annelle's engagement party. Jackson came home to find her passed out with the phone nearby, Jack Jr. crying and spaghetti sauce bubbling over on the stove, exactly like the first movie.

After her funeral, M'Lynn visited Truvy's and vented out her anger, which was a scene first seen graveside in 1989. After M'Lynn left, Annelle said to the ladies she and Sammy wanted to name the baby Shelby, and wondered if M'Lynn would mind. Truvy said Shelby would have been tickled pink. Clairee whispered "pink" sadly, as that was Shelby's favorite color.

It was M'Lynn that Annelle had said all this to in the original, and she had also been the one to whisper "pink". Annelle's story had been severely shortened in the TV version, with her meeting Sammy at Shelby's reception his only appearance.

The movie ended there. In the original, the movie ended with Annelle going into labor during a town Easter celebration, and Sammy (dressed as a rabbit) rode to the hospital on the back of Louie's motorcycle. I'll never forget going to the theater and seeing the original. I cried like a baby at M'Lynn's graveside painful rant, and the look on her face when she whispered "pink" and told Annelle that "life goes on". Daryl Hannah played Annelle in the original.
