Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is Doc Martin's full name and title?

Answer: Dr. Martin Ellingham

He preferred "Dr. Ellingham," and when he first arrived in his new position in the village, kept correcting people. He did not realize that being addressed as "Doc Martin" was the townspeople's way of accepting him. The people of Portwenn accept the Doc the way he is, which is why they also do sometimes refer to him as "tosser!"
2. What is the name of the young woman who married Doc Martin?

Answer: Louisa Glasson

Louisa is the answer here. When she and the Doc first met, she was a teacher, and it was not love at first sight. She became headmistress at the local school, and throughout seasons eight and nine was in the process of becoming a counselor. Dr. Edith Montgomery was a former fiancee of the Doc's, but he broke it off with her before ever meeting Louisa. Mrs. Tishell is the local pharmacist, and Pauline Lamb worked as a receptionist to Doc Martin.
3. In what town do Doc Martin and his wife Louisa live?

Answer: Portwenn

Portwenn, a lovely seaside village in Cornwall, is the correct answer. The Doc formerly lived in London, but left that city to take up a position and new residence in Portwenn, which is how he and Louisa met. Neither he nor Louisa have ever lived in Canterbury, much less New York.
4. What is the name of the young son of Doc Martin and Louisa? (It sounds like a 19th century American-born author in reverse.)

Answer: James Henry

James Henry is the name of their young son. (Henry James was the American-born author I referred to in the hint.) His parents love him, but Louisa is always worried James Henry might grow up as emotionally stunted as his father the Doc. Dr. Ruth Ellingham has said that James Henry might be gifted!
5. What phobia does Doc Martin suffer from that causes him so much trouble professionally?

Answer: Haemophobia, fear of blood

Hemophobia, or haemophobia, to give the word its British spelling, would be a problem for any physician. For a man who used to be a surgeon, as the Doc was before he arrived in Portwenn, it is an almost insurmountable problem. As the Doc once told a therapist who asked him how the phobia made him feel; "It's bloody irritating!"
6. How many receptionists (regulars, not very brief subs) have worked for Doc Martin?

Answer: Three: Elaine, Pauline, Morwenna

There have been three receptionists: the pushy Elaine Denham of season one, who after forcing the Doc to take her on, moved away with her boyfriend. She was followed by her ambitious cousin Pauline Lamb, who became a phlebotomist, and then also left Portwenn.

The current receptionist is the confident and forthright Morwenna Newcross. Al Large dated each one, and he and Morwenna married in season nine.
7. What was the name of Doc Martin's aunt who owned a farm and, in spite of her name, was not a heroine of France but a lifelong resident of Portwenn?

Answer: Auntie Joan

A kind, hardworking woman, Auntie Joan loved her nephew, and when Doc Martin was a boy, she gave him the attention and affection that his cold, critical, unloving and selfish parents did not. Played by Stephanie Cole, OBE, Auntie Joan passed away at the very beginning of the fifth season of "Doc Martin."
8. Who is Doc Martin's other aunt, the psychiatrist who first appeared in the fifth season of "Doc Martin?"

Answer: Ruth Ellingham

Ruth Ellingham (played by Dame Eileen Atkins) is a forensic psychiatrist and author, and also an aunt of Doc Martin. Ruth arrived in Portwenn for the funeral of her sister, Doc Martin's Auntie Joan. Ruth decided to remain when she learned that Joan had left her the farm. Edith Montgomery is Doc Martin's former fiancee; Mrs. Tishell is the local pharmacist and self-described "fellow medical professional" who is in love with the Doc, and Maggie Penhale is the ex-wife of local lawman PC Joe Penhale.
9. What was the name of the woman Doc Martin was engaged to marry *before* he met Louisa?

Answer: Dr. Edith Montgomery

A viewer did not need to be Sigmund Freud to see that Dr. Montgomery was cold, selfish, and withholding, just like Doc Martin's mother, so it was just as well that the Doc broke off their engagement. Mrs. Tishell is the Portwenn resident infatuated with Doc Martin, Janice Bone is the ex-fiancee of local PC Joe Penhale, and Dr. Rebecca Hedden was the physician sent to Portwenn to oversee Doc Martin's practice following complaints made about him.
10. Who is the large-hearted but mostly incompetent Portwenn resident who, along with his son Al, has tried several businesses and failed at each one?

Answer: Bert Large

Bert Large and his son Al were rather inept plumbers when Doc Martin first arrived in Portwenn. Bert, played by Ian McNeice, has a fondness for get-rich-quick schemes that fail, but like Dickens' Mr. Micawber, always believes something else will turn up. Joe Penhale is the town's barely-adequate police constable, Clive Tishell was the husband of Mrs. Tishell, and Christopher Ellingham was Doc Martin's father. No one who knew Doc Martin's father would ever say Christopher Ellingham had a large heart!
