Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the first episode, "The Nightmare Begins", the Doctor, Steven and Katarina arrive on the planet where the Daleks are gathering their 'allies'. What is the name of the planet, first seen in the prequel story "Mission to the Unknown"?

Answer: Kembel

In the first episode, we are also introduced to a cast of other characters (apart from Daleks), including various members of the Space Security Service, both at their Earth base and on the planet Kembel.

It was Space Agent Marc Cory who went missing here in "Mission to the Unknown", and his colleagues are now searching for him.

In addition to William Hartnell as the Doctor, Steven Taylor was portrayed by Peter Purves and Katarina was played by Adrienne Hill.
2. Two Space Agents from Earth are searching for their missing colleague (Marc Cory from "Mission to the Unknown"), but only one of them, Bret Vyon, survives to encounter the Doctor and his Companions. How did his partner die?

Answer: Shot by a Dalek

SSS Agent Bret Vyon and his partner Kent Gantry crash on the Kembel and are being pursued in the jungle by Daleks when they are introduced. Gantry was injured in the crash, and insists on Vyon going on without him as they are trying to get to a location to send a signal to Earth about the Daleks. His injury is only slowing them down.

Vyon doesn't want to leave Gantry, but after Gantry pulls his gun out and threatens him, Vyon leaves. Gantry, however, meets up with a couple of Daleks, and is quickly killed.

Vyon, in the meantime, witnesses the TARDIS materialize, and follows the Doctor when he emerges. He accosts the Doctor at gunpoint, stealing the key to the TARDIS. But his plan goes awry when he enters the TARDIS - Steven gathers enough strength to knock him out and capture him.

Bret Vyon was played by Nicholas Courtney while Brian Cant was the unfortunate Kent Gantry.
3. In "Day of Armageddon" (episode two), the Doctor and his Companions learn that one of the Dalek 'allies' is a very important Earth politician (Mavic Chen) that should have been the last person to become involved with a plan to conquer the universe. What is his title?

Answer: The Guardian of the Solar System

'Guardian of the Solar System' Mavic Chen is first introduced in episode one when he is seen giving a broadcast celebrating 25 years of peace (since the Non-Aggression Pact of 3975) and that he will be going on vacation. The Doctor witnesses his spaceship landing at the end of the episode, but at the time he is more concerned with the fact that there are Daleks than with the identity of the man. It is Space Agent Vyon who makes the connection when he later sees the ship and realizes that humanity is being betrayed by the man who should be its protector.

Mavic Chen was played by Kevin Stoney.
4. One of the alien delegates is captured by Space Agent Vyon and a plan is hatched to infiltrate the meeting and learn the Daleks' plans. Who takes on the disguise of 'Zephon, ruler of the Fifth Galaxy'?

Answer: The Doctor

Zephon and Mavic Chen encounter each other, and each have different motivations for aligning with the Daleks. Zephon seems somewhat intimidated by Chen's ambitions, and tries to impose his own independence by refusing to accompany Chen to the meeting, saying he'll go when he wants to. It is because of this exchange that Zephon is alone and captured by Vyon.

The Doctor dons Zephon's robe and infiltrates the meeting of the galactic council, learning how Chen is crucial to the Dalek plans to operate a device called the 'Time Destructor'.

Zephon was portrayed by Julian Sherrier.
5. Mavic Chen reveals at the meeting that he has produced a rare element that is crucial to the functioning of a device called the 'Time Destructor'. What is this (fictional) element?

Answer: Taranium

Chen explains to the others in the meeting that taranium is the rarest element in the universe, and can only be found on one of the 'dead planets' of the solar system (which we learn later is Uranus). He also claims that it took him 50 years to gather the amount that he shows everyone (about the size of a large can of soup).
6. The deception is discovered and the Doctor and his companions (including Vyon) flee the planet on Mavic Chen's spaceship, hoping to reach Earth and warn of the Dalek plans. Unfortunately, the Daleks take control of the ship with a randomiser, causing it to descend to a nearby planet, called Desperus. What is the nature of this planet, for which the 3rd episode "Devil's Planet" is named?

Answer: A prison planet

As Chen's ship is being stolen by the TARDIS time travelers (and Vyon), the consequences of their actions are being felt by those left behind.

Zephon and Mavic Chen try to cast the blame for the Doctor's theft of the taranium on each other, Zephon claiming that Chen is involved (the thieves are the same species) while Chen asks why Zephon wasn't present when the taranium was stolen. The Dalek's believe Chen, resulting in the immediate execution of the ruler of the Fifth Galaxy.

In the meantime, the Daleks take control of Chen's ship, causing it to land on Desperus while they follow from Kembel. Some minor damage occurs to the ship, and while they are repairing it, a denizen of the prison planet manages to sneak aboard.
7. With their ship repaired and launched, episode four ("The Traitors") begins with a hostage situation as a stowaway on the ship grabs Katarina and demands that they go where he wants. At the controls, Vyon causes the ship to lurch, and Katarina and her captor stumble into the airlock, which closes behind them. What happens next?

Answer: Katarina opens the airlock, ejecting them both into space

The tragic death of Katarina marks the first time one of the Doctor's Companions is killed. With the convict and Katarina in the airlock, the Doctor actually threatens to push a button and eject them from the ship, but his threats are empty and he demands that Vyon turn the ship back to Kembel, where the man wants to go. Vyon argues with him, but before any actual decision is reached on how to proceed, Katarina opens the airlock from the inside.

In shock, the Doctor says that "She didn't understand. She couldn't understand. She wanted to save our lives. And perhaps, the lives of all the other beings of the Solar System. I hope she's found her perfection. Oh, I shall always remember her as one of the daughters of the gods."
8. Back on Earth, Mavic Chen has arrived ahead of his stolen ship and has named Space Agent Bret Vyon as a traitor. He has SSS administrator Roald calls in the special force of the Space Security Service to deal with Vyon and his 'co-conspirators'. How does Chen describe the special force commander, Sara Kingdom?

Answer: Ruthless, hard, efficient, and does exactly as ordered

We learn that there are more people involved with Mavic Chen's traitorous plans than just himself. The head of the Security Service, Karlton, is revealed as his supporter, and he has the power to direct the agents and the special force to do Chen's bidding without suspicion. The introduction of Sara Kingdom as a ruthless special force commander is done with an effort to make her gender reveal a surprise, only referring to her as 'Kingdom', and being careful not to say 'he' or 'him' before she appears.

Jean Marsh played the role of Sara Kingdom while Maurice Browning war Karlton.

Incidentally, Jean Marsh originally appeared in the 14th serial "The Crusade" as Lady Joanna, the sister of Richard I (The Lionheart).
9. Expecting that Chen has arrived before them, Vyon avoids Earth's spaceship landing area, and crashes near the Central City Experimental Station, where he hopes that his friend Daxtar will help them. But when they enter the station, they find it empty of personnel and suspect a trap. Who shoots and kills Bret Vyon as the trap is sprung?

Answer: Sara Kingdom

When they arrive at the Experimental Station, the Doctor wonders why there are no staff or scientists, and why his friend wasn't ready to meet them. Daxtar does show up, eventually, but he reveals himself to be involved with Chen's conspiracy when he lets on that he knows about the taranium without anyone else mentioning it.

Vyon is quick to deal with the traitor, shooting his 'old friend', and the Doctor is incensed at the waste of life and at the loss of potential information.

Sara arrives moments later, and Vyon is pleased to see her, expecting her to be an ally as a fellow Space Agent, but Kingdom has been sent by Chen believing Vyon to be a traitor, also telling her of the taranium (without revealing its true purpose). When Sara's first question is "Which of you has the taranium?", the trio tries to run. Steven and the Doctor get away, but Vyon does not, and is shot and killed.

Daxtar was played by Roger Avon.
10. IN "Counter Plot" (episode five), Steven and the Doctor hide themselves in a room that is being used for an active experiment. Just as Sara finds them, the experiment in cellular dissemination is activated and they are transported to another planet, which the scientists believe to be uninhabited. What planet?

Answer: Mira

The scientists at the Experimental Station know where the subjects (mice) are supposed to rematerialize, but they don't know if it will work with the people caught in their experiment, as they had never tried to transmit people before in their previous attempts. When they inform Karlton, the head of the Security Service of this fact, the news quickly gets to Mavic Chen, who then informs the Daleks.

Chen tells the Daleks that sending the fugitives to Mira was done on purpose, to prevent them from escaping with the taranium, and since Kembel is closer to Mira than Earth, they will quickly be able to capture the fugitives and retrieve the taranium. But he decides to use the situation to turn the tables on the Daleks, and instructs Karlton to go to Venus and prepare to launch the fleet against the Daleks and destroy Kembel.
