After being demoted to traffic reporter Leslie refused to land the helicopter during a lightning storm. Supergirl flew up to save her and the pilot. Lightning struck while Supergirl was touching the chopper. Leslie was injured but some of Supergirl's powers manifested in Leslie in the form of her new electricity-based powers.

Cat was attacked in her headquarters and eventually trapped in an elevator when Supergirl saved her. They figured out that Cat was the target and she agreed to work with the DEO and serve as bait for Livewire.

The DEO had built an electricity trap for Livewire, but it was damaged during a fight.

Supergirl instead broke open an water main and sprayed Livewire with the water, proving that water and electricity don't mix.

Winn had been invited over to enjoyed Thanksgiving dinner with Kara, Alex and their mother.

During the dinner Alex and their mother got in a fight and it turned into an all out shouting match that ended when Alex left the apartment and Kara was later called away to fight Livewire.

Winn told her it was just nice being a part of a family.

It was revealed that Winn's father was in prison, but not why during the end of the episode. Viewers who were also fans of the comic knew that Winn, or Winslow Schott Jr. was the son of the villain known as the Toyman. He would appear later in the first season.

Answer: Her parents were killed in a fire.

Kara, having travelled from Krypton was placed with the Danvers family after she arrived on Earth. Since she was already a teenager, a cover story for where her real parents were had to be concocted. The family decided on explaining that she was a foster child due to the death of her parents in a fire.
