Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these characters died in "There's Something About Mary"?

Answer: Eileen

Eileen was killed in the first two minutes of the episode. Ketch used a hellhound - which he got from Crowley - to kill the deaf hunter. While he wanted her dead for accidentally killing a Man of Letters, he would have killed her anyway. The British Men of Letters had decided to kill all American hunters.
2. In "There's Something About Mary," Crowley taunted Lucifer, telling him that Kelly was "in the clutches of _______, Castiel, who is no doubt dragging her to a gruesome death." How did Crowley describe Castiel?

Answer: the Winchesters' love slave

While he often found it advantageous to team up with the Winchesters and their friend Castiel, Crowley always used colorful language to make fun of them, calling the brothers "moose" and "squirrel" and mocking their friendship with the angel. While the show never said it directly, it was often implied that Crowley was jealous of the family relationship and friendship among the other three characters.
3. Which is NOT something Lucifer made Crowley do, when he realized he could control him in "There's Something About Mary"?

Answer: Turn a gun on himself

Crowley had interfered with Rowena's spell, locking Lucifer within his vessel, rather than in the cage where Rowena intended. Crowley wanted revenge for the time that Lucifer kept him as a slave. But, a Lucifer loyalist figured out how to get Lucifer his power back, and in so doing, gave Lucifer the power to control Crowley.

The scene where Crowley realized this was masterful, both for Crowley's reactions, and for the glee Lucifer took in turning the tables on his captor.
4. In "There's Something About Mary," what was the "something" about Mary?

Answer: She had been brainwashed to kill hunters

Mary had been tortured and brainwashed by Toni and was killing hunters. The brothers managed to prevail against five Brits in the episode, but then Mary showed up and forced them to let the Brits go, actually firing a warning shot at Dean.
5. How did the brothers escape from the locked-down bunker in "Who We Are"?

Answer: Grenade launcher

After Ketch locked them in, the brothers and Toni had two or three days of air. They started out by researching a magic way out. They found a spell, but Ketch had warded against magic. Next, they tried pickaxes. They barely made a dent. Finally Dean went and got the grenade launcher that fans had seen in the trunk of the Impala for years.

He used it to break through, and they were able to escape.
6. In "Who We Are," Sam told his brother that following the British Men of Letters had been "easier." What was Sam's response when Dean asked, "easier than what?"

Answer: Easier than leading.

Sam regretted trusting the Brits. But, he was honest about why he had done so. And, he got the opportunity to fix his mistake later in the episode, when he convinced hunters to follow him and he led the American hunters into battle against the Brits.
7. As the brothers contemplated dying in the bunker in "Who We Are," Sam asked Dean how he pictured the end. Dean replied, "I always thought we'd go out _______ style."

Answer: Butch and Sundance

Dean was referring to the movie, "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid," which ended with the two outlaws played by Paul Newman and Robert Redford surrounded, and going out in a hale of bullets. Sam added, "Blaze of glory," and Dean repeated it. Then, as he thought of it, he smiled, and thought of using the grenade launcher to do just that in this situation. Later, as he fired the grenade launcher, he quoted Bruce Willis in "Die Hard": "Yippee Ki yay . . ."
8. In "Who We Are," a group of hunters came together to fight the British Men of Letters. Two of them had not seen Sam and Dean since season 5. What had happened when Walt and Roy last saw the Winchesters?

Answer: They had killed Sam and Dean

Walt and Roy had killed Sam and Dean in season 5's "Dark Side of the Moon." Killing the brothers with shotguns, they shot Sam first, and then, just before shooting Dean, Dean warned them that when he came back, he was "going to be pissed." They shot him, too. Of course, the brothers came back after going to heaven and speaking with Joshua.

In the season 12 episode, there was the awkward moment when the four of them remembered their last meeting, but then Dean said, "No hard feelings."
9. While Sam led a group of hunters, taking the fight to the Brits, in "Who We Are," what was Dean doing?

Answer: Saving Mary

Dean looked on with pride as his younger brother spoke to the hunters. Sam admitted he had been wrong about the Brits, and he gave an inspirational speech about why the American hunter way was right, and the innocent-killing Brits had to be stopped. The hunters agreed to follow Sam, and then Dean told him he would stay behind.

His leg was injured from the bunker escape, so he was no good in a fight, and he told his brother, "I saw you. You're ready for this. You show those . . . who's boss." When Sam asked what Dean was going to do, he replied, "I'm going to save mom." Before Sam left, his brother hugged him and told him, "You come back."
10. Dean killed Ketch in "Who We Are."

Answer: False

Toni was able to get Dean into Mary's mind. He was able to reach her by telling her what she had done to her sons with her deal, and that he both loved and hated her. Then, just as he reached her, Ketch came in and killed Toni, and ripped apart the connection. Already injured from the escape, Dean fought Ketch, taking a beating while giving as good as he got. Ketch then pulled a gun.

As he was about to shoot Dean, Mary shot him. Ketch told Mary, "I knew you were a killer." Looking at her and her son, he then said, "You both are." Dean replied, "You're right," and Mary shot him again, killing him. Dean and Mary then spoke, with him telling her that her deal and all that happened made her sons who they were, people who saved the world.

Then, both of her sons forgave her, and the three had a family hug.
11. What song was playing during the "road so far" segment of "All Along the Watchtower"?

Answer: "Carry on Wayward Son" by Kansas

"Carry On Wayward Son" was the song used for the "road so far" segment in the penultimate episode of season 1, "Salvation." Since then, it has been used for every season finale "road so far" segment, and has become a sort of anthem for the show.
12. It appeared that Lucifer killed Crowley in "There's Something About Mary," but he was revealed to be alive in "All Along the Watchtower." How did Crowley survive being stabbed by Lucifer?

Answer: He possessed a rat

In a flashback, viewers saw how Crowley once again survived. While Lucifer was gloating over getting the upper hand, Crowley exited his body and entered the rat. Lucifer then stabbed the empty vessel. Crowley then followed his corpse and re-possessed it, later climbing out of his grave.
13. Which characters were killed in "All Along the Watchtower"?

Answer: Crowley, Rowena, Kelly, and Castiel

Four characters were killed in the episode. Kelly died in childbirth, Crowley killed himself to stop Lucifer. And, Lucifer killed both Castiel and Rowena.
14. What familiar character did Castiel encounter in the alternate world during "All Along the Watchtower"?

Answer: Bobby

The nephilim birth opened up a doorway between the two worlds. When Castiel went into the other world, he found a dark, horrible place with armies of angels fighting hordes of demons, that had never been saved by the Winchesters - since they had never been born. Bobby was there, though, and he saved Cas from a demon. Cas took Sam and Dean there, and Bobby told them that he had known the hunter Mary Campbell, and she had spoken of her lost love, John Winchester, who had died forty years before.

This gave the viewers and the brothers a chance to think about what would have happened to the world if Mary had never made her demon deal.
15. Which characters were trapped in the alternate apocalyptic world at the end of season 12?

Answer: Mary and Lucifer

The brothers lured Lucifer into the alternate world. Crowley and Sam worked a spell to seal the rift between worlds while Dean kept Lucifer busy - with his "little friend" (reference to "Scarface" movie) - Bobby's gun, called Rufus, filled with angel blade bullets.

The spell required a life, so Crowley killed himself. Cas then knifed Lucifer while the brothers escaped back to their world. But - Lucifer followed Cas back through the rift, killing Castiel. Mary then tried to protect her boys, attacking the devil with the warded brass knuckles. Lucifer then fell back into the rift, dragging Mary with him. Mary and Lucifer were then trapped in the "Mad Max" world, as Dean called it, when the rift closed. Dean was left looking at his slain best friend and the empty place where his mother had been, and Sam went inside to find a dead Kelly and the nephilim. Season 13, here we come.
