Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which popular sitcom, one that featured characters like the Fonz and Richie Cunningham, did "Laverne & Shirley" start as a spin-off of?

Answer: Happy Days

"Happy Days" was a successful sitcom in the 1970s that spawned a few spin-offs like "Out of the Blue," "Joanie Loves Chachi," "Mork and Mindy," and, yes, "Laverne & Shirley." The characters of Laverne DeFazio and Shirley Feeney were portrayed on "Happy Days" as friends of Fonzie before getting their own show.
2. Penny Marshall played Laverne DeFazio. Her best friend was Shirley Feeney. Which actress, known for her roles in "American Graffiti" and "The Conversation," portrayed the fun-loving Shirley?

Answer: Cindy Williams

Born in Los Angeles in 1947, Cindy Williams always felt comfortable on stage. She started her professional acting career in commercials in the late '60s. She then was cast in some roles on television before her career took off in the early '70s with movie roles in "Travels with My Aunt," "American Graffiti" where she first worked with Ron Howard, and "The Conversation." She then landed the role of Shirley Feeney in "Happy Days" alongside Penny Marshall's Laverne DeFazio.

The two proved so popular that the spin-off was commissioned.
3. When the show opens, Laverne and Shirley are working as bottle-cappers at a beer-bottling factory. Where is the show set, home of Harley-Davidson, the NBA's Bucks, and the band Violent Femmes?

Answer: Milwaukee, Wisconsin

The show "Laverne & Shirley" is set in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, as it was the hometown of Thomas L. Miller, the executive producer (and also of "Happy Days"). Laverne and Shirley both work at the fictional Shotz Brewery as bottle-cappers for beer bottles.

Milwaukee is known as "Brew City" (hence the name for the city's baseball team - the Brewers) and has a rich history in brewing beer. Historically, the Milwaukee River provided clean water for the beer as well as a way of distributing the product when it was made, and the cold weather made the city ideal for making lager. The Pabst Brewing Company was the first major brewery to be based in Milwaukee, but the Joseph Schlitz Brewing Company and the Miller Brewing Company were also based in the city.
4. Shirley Feeney had an on-and-off relationship with Carmine Ragusa, the "Big Ragoo." Aside from his aspirations to be a successful dancer and singer, what profession, shared with the likes of Evander Holyfield, Jack Dempsey, and Sugar Ray Robinson, did Carmine originally have?

Answer: Boxer

Shirley Feeney and Carmine Ragusa met in high-school and were romantically involved then. On the show the two date on-and-off but remain friends. Carmine, known as the "Big Ragoo," owns a dance studio and dreams of landing a major Broadway role, however, he was originally a successful boxer who once won the Golden Gloves, an award for amateur boxing.

On the final episode for the show, Carmine auditions for the Broadway production for the musical "Hair." Did he get the role? You'll just have to watch and see.
5. Shirley Feeney has a special relationship with a childhood toy, Boo Boo. What is Boo Boo?

Answer: A stuffed cat

Boo Boo Kitty is Shirley Feeney's large stuffed black cat. The name was given on the show when actress Cindy Williams forgot her line and used the name for her mother's cat instead. The name stuck and was subsequently used for later episodes. Boo Boo Kitty is what Shirley would use when she was worried or sad to comfort herself.
6. Both Shirley and Laverne start out small but then move out to Burbank, California to live in the big city. What small-time job do they get at Bard's Department Store?

Answer: Gift-wrappers

For the sixth season, Laverne decides to move out to Los Angeles to be with her father, Frank, and his new wife Edna. Shirley decides to come as well and the two find a flat in Burbank, California. The two land jobs at Bard's Department Store as gift-wrappers but they dream big and hope to be picked up by the movie industry and becoming stars or at least finding rich husbands and starting a family.

Not only do the ladies move out to California, but their friends move there as well!
7. In the show, Shirley Feeney develops an infatuation with which teen idol who made a name for himself on "American Bandstand?"

Answer: Fabian

Fabian Forte was known professionally by his first name only, Fabian, and was a teen idol in the '50s and '60s. He was discovered in Philadelphia when a producer noticed him staring at the ambulance that was taking his father away to a hospital due to a heart attack!

On "Laverne & Shirley," Shirley develops a fan crush on Fabian and even goes as far as posing as a French waitress in order to sneak into the hotel that he is staying and meeting him. Laverne is right there with her.
8. Shirley and Laverne originally live together in a basement apartment. They communicate with their upstairs neighbours through the dumbwaiter shaft in their apartment. What were the names of Laverne and Shirley's friends?

Answer: Lenny and Squiggy

Michael McKean and David Lander had created the characters of Lenny and Squiggy, respectively, well before they appeared on the show "Laverne & Shirley," however, when the actors met with Cindy Williams and Penny Marshall, they were invited to have a spot on the show.

Their impact was so great that when the characters of Laverne and Shirley moved out to California, Lenny and Squiggy moved out with them. In the eighth season, the character of Lenny was written off of the show as actor Michael McKean was busy setting the amp to 11 as he had committed to filming "This is Spinal Tap."
9. In the fifth season of "Laverne & Shirley," what additional profession do the girls take on, something that prompted an animated spin-off of the show?

Answer: Army recruits

On the fifth season of the show, the characters of Laverne and Shirley join the US Army reserve. The story line gets more developed when the girls are asked to appear in an army film about prostitution and also when they are given a survival test against the wild outdoors.

This story line proved so compelling that the animation company Hanna-Barbera Productions made an animated series called "Laverne & Shirley in the Army."
10. Cindy Williams' character Shirley was written out of the show, "Laverne & Shirley," in the eighth and final season. What was the reason that Cindy Williams left the show?

Answer: Cindy Williams got pregnant

Cindy Williams got pregnant and the producers on the show were not impressed because Shirley Feeney, her character, was not. This was compounded by the fact that Cindy Williams was expected to sign a contract that had her committing to working on her due date. Cindy Williams filmed two episodes of the eighth season and then was written off of the show. One episode she is hypnotized into believing she is a chicken and the next she was married to US Army doctor Walter Meaney and had moved away to be with her husband.

In reality, Cindy Williams filed a 20-million-dollar lawsuit against the network which was later settled out of court.
