3. Which river basin is featured in the reality show "Swamp People"?

Answer: Atchafalaya Basin

The Atchafalaya Basin or Swamp is the largest in the United States. It is comprised of an area that is approximately 1,400,000 acres in the central part of the state, and is home to many animals including countless migratory birds, deer, wild turkey, and black bear.
4. In the reality series, "Swamp People", it is common to hear the terms "pirogue" and "bayou" being used. What are they?

Answer: Boat and Stream

Hollowed from a tree trunk, a pirogue is a canoe with a flat bottom. It is generally propelled by paddling, although some do attach outboard motors. On the show, a pirogue is usually seen in remote places that are difficult to reach by any other means, especially in a marshy bayou.

The term bayou can be used to describe a slow-moving stream or river, a tide-water creek, or any kind of marshy wet-land.
5. How would the culture that is portrayed in the reality series, "Swamp People", be described?

Answer: Cajun

Many of the people are descendents of the French who left Canada in the 1700s, and migrated south. Cajuns have their own distinct culture traits, which include language, cuisine, and music.
6. In the reality series, "Swamp People", the viewers can regularly see family interaction, especially as they cook and eat meals together. Which of the following would typically be on the menu?

Answer: Jambalaya

Jambalaya is a dish that has three main parts: meat, vegetables, and rice. The most common form is called Creole jambalaya, and contains tomatoes among the other vegetables of onion, celery, and peppers. The type seen on the program would be the less common form that doesn't contain tomatoes, and sometimes doesn't contain any vegetables.
7. The reality show, "Swamp People", centers around the activity of people who make their living in an unusual way. What animal are they shown hunting every episode?

Answer: Alligator

Although some believe the program portrays cruelty to animals, the truth of the matter is that the alligator population needs to be controlled to insure the safety of both the animals themselves and people. Studies by the state regarding the alligator population are made year-round, and determine quotas and tag allotments from extensive surveys taken. Hunters must have a license, a legal description of the land where they intend to hunt, and either own the land or have written permission from the landowner before they are able to buy tags. Each tag can only be used on the property listed on the hunter's license. All alligators must be tagged immediately, and when hunters run out of tags, they are normally finished hunting. Failure to "tag out" not only hurts their pride, but also their pocketbook!
8. Viewers of the reality show "Swamp People" are regular reminded of the length of the hunting season. How long may they hunt their prey?

Answer: 30 days

According to the Louisiana Alligator Advisory Council, the season begins the first Wednesday in September and continues for thirty days. The month is characterized by temperature changes: it can be excruciatingly hot so that the alligator hides begin to shrivel, and it can be unseasonably cold so that the alligator begins to think it is time for hibernation.

In addition the market for alligators is sometimes volatile. In 2011 the average price for a twelve-foot alligator was approximately $180 - if the hide was perfect.

Although it is difficult to estimate how much of their yearly income is made during those thirty days, most hunters do have to supplement their income in other ways.
9. The animals that are hunted on the reality show, "Swamp People", are difficult to kill. Why?

Answer: They have a very small kill spot

The term the hunters use is that they are "fishing for alligators". Since the animals normally feed at night, the hunters leave baited hooks in strategic areas suspended over the water, and check the lines early in the morning. That doesn't mean, however, that the animal is captured! As they hunt in pairs, one person wrangles the beast, while the other waits for the opportunity to shoot the animals in the quarter-sized kill spot on the back of the head. Large alligators are very powerful, but can tire out rather quickly. Smaller alligators tend to be feisty and more difficult to wrangle. If a shot happens to hit an alligator in a place that is not the kill spot, the animal may be temporarily stunned, appear to be dead for some time, and can even "come back to life" after it is in the boat.
10. A spin-off of the reality program "Swamp People" has been made.

Answer: True

"Outback Hunters" debuted on the History Channel in October 2012. The basic premise is the same. Set in the Northern Territory of Australia, the people hunt crocodile. In addition, there are two mobile app games available: "Choot'Em Angry Swamp" and "Swamp People".
