Along with Robert Love (Head of Drama at STV in the 1980s) Chandler created the show with a gritty edge, and a grumpy detective Jim Tagart. The pilot episode was very successful and a series was commissioned and a legend was born.

Although McManus died in 1994 the show carried on and retained it's title. Jim Taggart was a great character played exceptionally well by Mark McManus, and lthough he was brusque and fond of shouting the character was well loved. Mark McManus lived in Australia in the 1960s and starred in "Skippy" and alongside MIck Jagger in "Ned Kelly".

Jackie Reid first appeared in the episode "Death Comes Softly" as a WPC. That was back in 1990, and since then we've seen the character grow in stature and get promoted.

James first appeaed in the Mike Jardine role in a guest appearance in "The Killing Philosophy", his last appearance was in "Death Trap" in 2002. Peter Livingstone was a young sergeant played by Neil Duncan. He helped Jim Taggart solve crimes up until about 1987. Neil Duncan later appeared as a guest star in an episode called "Forbidden Fruit" reprising the role of Peter Livingstone.

Robbie Ross first appeared in "Taggart" in 1998. John Michie has starred in many other TV series - Trevor Moon was his character in "Moon and Son", Tony Fraser was his character in "Albion Market" and James Robinson was his character in an episode of "Poirot".
