Question 9 of 10

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. One of my favorite Shows from the eighties was "Press Your Luck." From the easy questions to those wacky, animated "Whammies," "Press Your Luck" had it all. For the life of me, I can't remember the raven haired host. What was his name?

Answer: Peter Tomarken

"Press Your Luck" ran from 1983-1986 and was reasonably successful. Tomarken hosted several other game shows, and hosted one version of the pilot for "Whammy" a "P.Y.L." revival. Sadly, Tomarken and his wife Kathleen were killed in 2006 when a small plane he was piloting crashed while working for the charity "Angel Flight."
2. Pat Sajak has been the host of "Wheel Of Fortune" since 1983. Since it seems like he has always been the host of "Wheel", I don't think he has ever hosted anything else. So, tell me, did Pat Sajak regularly host a game show before he began hosting "Wheel Of Fortune?"

Answer: No

The key word is regularly. In 1997, as an April Fools joke, Sajak and Alex Trebek, from "Jeopardy" switched hosting jobs for one night. While Trebek hosted "Wheel" Sajak and co-host Vanna White were contestants, while Pat's wife, Lesly, turned the letters.
3. A version of the game show "Password" has been around since the sixties. Several different titles have been used for the different versions. Which of these names was NOT used as a title for one of the versions?

Answer: "What's The Password"

The great Allen Ludden served as host of "Password" from its inception in 1961 until 1975, and then hosted the revival "Password Plus" from 1979-1981. During his reign in the 60's and 70's Ludden hosted both the daytime and prime-time versions, on both CBS and ABC. NBC followed with "Super Password" hosted by Bert Convey, from 1984-1989. Regis Philbin is the host of "Million Dollar Password" that began in June of 2008 on CBS.
4. This game show has been updated several times over the course of its long run. Now it's mostly about the cash, but in the early years, it was more about the prizes. The ending of the show used to feature the winning contestant looking at various prizes and 'shopping' with their winnings. What is the name of this show?

Answer: "Wheel Of Fortune"

The "Price Is Right" features the "Showcase Showdown". The "Newlywed Game" usually gave away a grand prize the newlyweds could use, such as a new bedroom suite or a washer dryer. "The Prize Is Priced"...well that was featured on an episode of the "Flintstones"!
5. "The New Tic-Tac-Dough" premiered in 1978, hosted by the one and only Wink Martindale. The game was as easy as the name implies, answer the questions correctly to place your 'X' or 'O' on the board. The bonus round came with a trouble maker though. Guess the square with him in it, and loose all your bonus money. What character represented this troublemaker?

Answer: Dragon

Owner of one of the greatest heads of hair in TV history, Wink Martindale is a legend when it comes to game shows. Not everyone in Hollywood was a fan though. Martindale and fellow game show great Gene Rayburn it would seem had a beef between them. Why else would Rayburn have given Wink the nickname "Stink Fartindale"?
6. Richard Dawson was a regular panelist on the show "Match Game", but I swear I saw him host his own show. I vaguely remember the show had two teams, usually made up of relatives, and that Richard used to kiss all the women on the lips. What was the name of the show that aired in the U.S.?

Answer: "Family Feud"

"Family Feud" has gone through many variations, with several different hosts. Dawson was the original host, followed by, in order, Ray Combs, Dawson again, Louie Anderson, Richard Karn, and John O'Hurley. Al Roker has been the host for the short run of "Celebrity Family Feud".
7. Super sloppy fun debuted on Nickelodeon in 1986. Teams of kids, two to a side, tried to answer trivia questions. The alternative to answering the questions was to take a "Physical Challenge" after the other team challenged you. This verbal gauntlet being thrown was also the name of the show. What was it?

Answer: "Double Dare"

Marc Summers was the host of this highly popular show during its run on Nick and later on the Fox Network. "Family Double Dare" was a later version, throwing Mom and Dad into the piles of slime and goo as well as the kids.
8. "Match Game" is one of my all-time favorite game shows. The other day I was watching an episode and one of the contestants looked awfully familiar. I could have sworn it was Kirstie Alley. I don't think I was hallucinating or dreaming. So, was Kirstie Alley ever on "Match Game" as a contestant?

Answer: Yes

This episode aired in 1979, and is one of those rare instances where a game show contestant was an 'unknown' and later went on to become famous on their own. Alley wouldn't break into Hollywood until 1982's "Star Trek II-The Wrath Of Khan". But it wasn't until she took her turn as "Rebecca Howe" on "Cheers" in 1987 that she became a super star.
9. "Jeopardy" is as serious a game show as there is. No jumping up and down, no yelling, cheering, or whooping it up what so ever. Yet the show was prominently featured on one episode of a popular sitcom in the mid-80's. Which character from the show "Cheers" was on "Jeopardy", where all the questions seemed tailor made for him...up until "Final Jeopardy" that is?

Answer: Cliff Clavin

If you recall, the first round categories were "Civil Servants", "Beer", "Stamps From Around The World", "Mothers and Sons", "Bar Trivia" and "Celibacy." Alas, poor Cliffy, he bet it all in "Final Jeopardy" and lost when the answer was "Archibald Leach, Bernard Schwartz, & Lucille LeSueur" and Cliff's question was "Who are three people who have never been in my kitchen."
10. This game show featured audience members, who were often dressed up in outlandish costumes, and they were given prizes and then asked if they wanted to trade their prize for what was behind door #1, or behind the box. Sometimes the trades were good, other times the contestants got "Zonked" and got a bad prize. Refresh my memory please and tell me, what was the name of that show?

Answer: "Let's Make a Deal"

The legendary Monty Hall was your host on "Let's Make a Deal" and while several others hosted, including Ricki Lake for a GSN special, none of the revivals came close to matching the popularity of the original. Hall is the father of two daughters, one of which, Joanna Gleason, won a Tony award in 1988 for best actress. His son, Richard Hall, is an Emmy award winning TV producer.
