Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. These people are lost in a place that looks a lot like Earth with one exception: everything is really BIG. What show am I talking about?

Answer: Land of the Giants

The "Land of the Giants" was the creation of the prolific Irwin Allen who produced so many TV shows and movies in the 1960s and 1970s. In this series, the hapless crew of a space transport were drawn into a "space worm" that lands them in this gigantic world. The show aired from 1968 to 1970.
2. The TV program "It's About Time" lasted only one season (26 episodes) from 1966-1967. Once again, the crew of a space craft is stranded in a very Earthlike place. In fact, it was the Earth but what was different about it?

Answer: It was the Earth during the time of cavemen.

Created by Sherwood Schwartz, of "Gilligan's Island" fame, the two astronauts are befriended by cavemen played by the zany Joe E. Ross and the irreplaceable Imogene Coca, of the classic Sid Caesar Show.
3. Irwin Allen's 1960s hit series, "Lost in Space", told the tale of the hapless "space family" Robinson and their hypertensive robot ("Danger! Will Robinson! Danger!"). But there was also a stowaway on board, as well. What was the name of this irksome stowaway?

Answer: Zachary Smith

Played by Jonathan Harris, Zachary Smith (or Dr. Smith) created more problems than the aliens and monsters combined. Zachary Taylor was the 12th President of the United States. Zachary Gray or (Grey) is a character in the young adult stories by Madeleine L'Engle. Zeke Bartkowski was a quarterback for the Green Bay Packers.
4. Richard Kimble couldn't return home because a killer was waiting for him there.

Answer: False

Doctor Richard Kimble couldn't return home for the opposite reason: the law was looking for him. Dr. Kimble was wrongly convicted for the murder of his wife, which was the premise for the classic series, "The Fugitive."
5. "Just sit right back down and you'll hear a tale..." Okay, "Gilligan's Island" had to be included in this quiz. But did you know that there were two versions of the opening theme song? In the first one, two of the castaways were not named; they were simply referred to "and the rest". Which two castaways were not named in the first version of the theme song?

Answer: The Professor and Mary Ann

The producers of the show had no idea that Mary Ann and The Professor would become so popular among viewers. The "Who would you rather date: Ginger or Mary Ann?" debate raged among male college students in the very first year of airing. Being the intelligent, eligible bachelor on the island, The Professor was popular among women viewers. According to Dawn Wells (Mary Ann), it was Bob Denver (Gilligan), that pushed for the new theme song.
6. "Lost in Space" has been thought of, erroneously, as a futuristic "Robinson Crusoe". What was the real inspiration for "Lost in Space"?

Answer: The Swiss Family Robinson

Written by Johann David Wyss and published in 1812, "The Swiss Family Robinson" was about a family shipwrecked on an island in the East Indies. Disney bought the rights to the title for a movie version. According to leading lady, June Lockhart, the producers wanted to name the series "The Space Family Robinson". Disney said "No dice."
7. Sometimes an individual can't get home because he can't remember where it is. Nor WHO he is. Frank Converse starred in this short-lived TV show (1967) about a man who is chased by bad guys into a harbor. When he gets to shore, he can't remember his name or history. People are out to kill him but he doesn't know why. All he remembers is a code phrase, which serves as the name of the show. What was the name of the show?

Answer: Coronet Blue

"Coronet Blue" never took off. In fact the network cancelled the show before it even aired. Then it was plugged in as a summer show. It was received with moderate popularity, but retained its cult status to this day.
8. The BBC got into the act, too. It ran a bizarre series about a secret agent who is held hostage in a place called "The Village". Try as he might to get home, the mostly unseen kidnappers stop him. What is the name of this cult-status series?

Answer: The Prisoner

Starring Patrick McGoohan, this show mixed surrealism with a spy thriller format, including a big bubble/balloon-like thing called "Rover" which smothered would-be escapees into submission.
9. Kwai Chang Caine was an American orphan, raised in a Shaolin monastery in China, in the classic show "Kung Fu". As an adult, Caine roams the 19th Century American West, using his martial arts prowess to survive. But why is Caine not in China where he was raised?

Answer: He is a wanted man in China and he has a half-brother that he is searching for

Caine's mentor, Master Po, was murdered back in China. Caine exacted revenge by murdering the Emperor's nephew. In order to avoid execution, Caine disappeared amidst the vast number of Chinese who were helping to build the West. As the series progressed, he discovered that he has a half-brother, Danny, living somewhere in America.
10. Joel Hodgson and Mike Nelson are both held hostage (separately) on a spaceship by the evil Dr. Forrester in the great series "Mystery Science Theater 3000". What is the name of the spaceship on which they are captives?

Answer: The Satellite of Love

The name of the ship is derived from a Lou Reed song of the same title. If you've never seen the show, it is one of the cleverest comedies in TV history. Basically, the crew (including robots)is tormented by watching terrible old "B" movies. To maintain their sanity, they hurl hysterical invectives at the films.
