Ray told Kate that his wife had died recently and there was too much work for him on the farm, so he offered Kate work and board, which Kate accepted.

She also noticed that Ray had a prosthetic right arm.

After discussing the Marshal's medical prognosis with Jack, Hurley happened to see Kate's mug shot, which Jack had found in the Marshal's jacket. Hurley freaked out a little bit, and said that Kate looked, "pretty hard-core". Jack said that the whole thing was none of their business.

Kate was trying to start a campfire, but she realized that she was out of matches. Sawyer came along and gave her his lighter. Sawyer said that since Kate was carrying the gun, she should use it to kill the Marshal and put him out of his misery. Kate didn't do it, but instead gave the gun to Sawyer. Sawyer shot the Marshal and aimed for the heart, but he missed.

He actually only perforated his lung, and the Marshal was still alive. The bullets were used up, so it was suggested that Jack killed the Marshal himself.

The group of hikers decided to set up camp for the night, as it was getting late and they didn't want to go through the jungle at night. They ended up discussing the transmission, and Boone said that they would have to tell the others. But Sayid decided that they shouldn't tell them, as it would take away their hope when they really needed it.

When they got back to the beach, no one said a word about the transmission except for Kate, who only told Jack.

As Kate approached the Marshal's tent, Hurley was hurrying out with a bunch of water bottles. Kate introduced herself, but it took a while for Hurley to give his name, as he looked absolutely terrified. When Hurley told Kate that Jack was looking for medicines in the plane, Hurley saw the gun she was carrying.

This made Hurley act very flustered and nervous, and he basically ran away from Kate.

We saw Locke making a whistle in this episode, which turned out to be a dog whistle. Locke used it to call Vincent, and Vincent appeared as if he'd never been gone. Locke told Michael that he had found Vincent, but he felt that Michael should be the one that gave Vincent to Walt. Michael never seemed to know about the whistle.

This probably made Michael feel badly for telling Walt that he didn't want him spending time with Locke. Later, Walt and Vincent had a very sweet reunion.

As Ray was supposedly taking Kate to the train station, Kate saw that they were being followed and realized that Ray had set her up. He said that he saw her picture in the post office, and he did it for the $23,000 reward so he'd be able to pay off his mortgage.

The car following Ray pulled up next to them, and the driver was the Marshal, who made the hand gesture of pointing a gun at Kate. Kate jerked the wheel and made the truck crash, but she pulled Ray out to safety, and consequently she was caught by the Marshal.

When Kate was going to leave Ray's farm, he convinced her to stay one more night and said that everyone deserved a fresh start. When she was talking to Jack after the Marshal's death, she wanted to tell him about her crime, but Jack didn't want to know about it.

He said that a person's past didn't matter on the island, and that everyone should be able to start over. That sat very well with Kate, and she looked at peace.

Hurley was asking Jack about his encounter with the island beast after finding the cockpit, and he wanted to know if it was a dinosaur. Jack said it wasn't a dinosaur. Hurley asked that if Jack didn't see it, how did he know it wasn't a dinosaur, to which Jack replied, "Because dinosaurs are extinct". This was a rather humorous moment!
