2. What was the first soap opera to be shown by the Dumont Network on American TV? A New York widow went to visit her DISTANT relatives who lived near a very big MOUNTAIN.

Answer: "Faraway Hill"

"Faraway Hill" lasted all of one and half months in 1946 at a cost of $300 per episode. No method existed at the time to record shows for posterity and no scripts of the show have survived.

Fran and her friends Kukla and Ollie, although it was created as a children's show, was watched by more adults than kiddies. This was the longest-running show in Dumont TV's history ('49-'55) and in the final episode, the props were removed while the good Captain was in the middle of a speech. You see the money ran out for Aldous du Mont and the network closed, lights were turned off, and Captain Video and friends walked off into the sunset, perplexed.
