Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This is the most commonly used term for zombies and is typically employed by Rick and his group.

Answer: Walkers

In the world of "The Walking Dead," no one has ever heard the term zombie, so these creatures are usually called walkers. The first written mention of the word zombie, "zombi," occurred in 1819, in a history of Brazil written by the English Romantic poet Robert Southey. The origin of the word "zombie" is thought to be West African, and it may be a combination of two Kongo words meaning fetish ("zumbi") and god ("nzambi").
2. These are zombies that lay in wait for people to walk by. Hershel got his leg bitten by one of them.

Answer: Lurkers

Lurkers is also a term used by the Governor in season 3, episode 3 ("Walk with Me") to refer to zombies that have been made docile by having their arms and jaws removed. Most often, however, people in the show use the term to refer to those that lay in wait, or "lurk."
3. This is what zombies are called in Grady Memorial Hospital, which is perhaps a symbolic echo of the corruption there.

Answer: Rotters

Grady Memorial Hospital has left piles of walker corpses to rot in the elevator shaft, which may be the origin of the term. The leaders there are also rotten, like the bodies in the elevator shaft, but in a moral sense.
4. This term for zombies, used early in the show by Daryl, probably comes from a type of circus performer.

Answer: Geeks

Glenn and Daryl are both heard using the term "geeks" in seasons one and two, though it seems to fade out of use in later episodes. At one point, Daryl finds a zombie hung from a tree and says, "The other geeks came and ate all the flesh off his legs." The term may come from the traveling circus performers, or "geeks," who used to eat live chickens and other disgusting things.
5. This term is used by Aaron to describe a pack of zombies that follows Rick and his crew from place to place.

Answer: Roamers

Aaron tells Rick that he's observed his group "long enough to see that you practically ignore a pack of roamers on your trail." Other Alexandrians also use the term "roamers," perhaps because the zombies appear to "roam" after people.
6. Zombies don't always walk (sometimes they crawl or float or lurk), but this term, employed by the residents of Woodbury, represents something every zombie does.

Answer: Biters

Even when they don't have legs, a "Walking Dead" zombie will still bite. The show has even depicted the decapitated heads of zombies biting.
7. A Terminus resident uses this term to refer to zombies, perhaps in contrast to warm-blooded humans.

Answer: Cold bodies

The term is used by Martin in season 5, episode 1, "No Sanctuary."
8. Merle uses this term for a zombie, perhaps inspired by the slow pace of the creatures.

Answer: Creeper

Merle employs the term in season 3, episode 3, "Walk with Me," when he tells the Governor, "Got us a creeper." Perhaps he evolved the term himself, because his brother Daryl Dixon originally referred to the zombies as "geeks," while the people of Woodbury often call them "biters" or "lurkers."
9. While some might call zombies the "undead," Rosita and Eugene, in contrast, originally called them this.

Answer: Dead Ones

Eugene says, "I sure as hell can't take a dead one down with sharp buttons and hella confidence." Rosita uses the term when she relates how she met Abraham: she and her group were fighting off some "dead ones" when he showed up, as if from out of nowhere, in a tank.
10. This term, often used to describe stupid people, is used by the drifter Dave in season 2.

Answer: Lamebrains

Rick and Glenn find Hershel alone and drinking in a bar in town in season 2, episode 8, "Nebraska." Dave and Troy, two drifters from Philadelphia, enter the bar and seem like they might cause trouble. In the course of their conversation, Dave says, "Walkers? That's what you call them? I like that better than lamebrains."
