Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Father Gabriel

Answer: Stokes

A former Episcopal priest who locked his parishioners outside his church at the start of the apocalypse, Father Gabriel Stokes is rescued by Rick's group, joins them, and gradually redeems himself. He makes his first appearance in season 5, episode 2, "Strangers."

The name comes from an Old English word meaning the trunk of a tree: "stocc." In Middle English, this word became "stoke." The name first appears in genealogical records in the 11th century.
2. Pete, Jesse, Sam, Ron

Answer: Anderson

The Andersons are residents of the Alexandria Safe Zone. Pete is abusive, a fact which becomes apparent to Carol. Jesse develops an attraction to Rick. Ron is Enid's boyfriend, and he grows jealous of Carl. Ron ends up accidentally killing Reg, after which Deanna orders Rick to kill him. Rick begins a brief romantic liaison with Jesse, only to see her later set upon by walkers. Her jealous son, Ron, tries to kill him for killing his father, and instead ends up shooting out Carl's eye.

The surname Anderson means "son of Andrew." Andrew comes from a Greek word that means "manly," a strange description for a family that includes one scared young boy, a wife abuser, and a jealous teenager.
3. Dr. Denise

Answer: Cloyd

Denise Cloyd is a psychiatrist who suffers from anxiety, but she must step up and become Alexandria's doctor. She also becomes Tara's girlfriend, but meets her death at the hands of Dwight, who shoots her in the eye with Daryl's crossbow.

As a surname, Cloyd comes from the Gaelic Mac Leoid, meaning "son of Leod," who was the son of the King of Man, Olaf the Black.
4. Deanna, Reg, Aiden, Spencer

Answer: Monroe

The Monroes are something like the royal family of the Alexandra Safe Zone, but not for long. Deanna, a former Ohio Congresswoman, leads the place, and Reg is the architect who helps maintain its defenses. But Reg is soon killed by Ron, Aiden is devoured by walkers, Deanna dies when the Wolves attack, and Spencer is disemboweled by Negan.

The surname Monroe comes from the Scots Gaelic bun or mun ("mouth of") and "roe" (river).
5. Officer Dawn

Answer: Lerner

Officer Dawn Lerner first appears in season 5, episdoe 4, "Slabtown." She runs Grady Memorial Hospital and keeps the wards as a type of indentured servants.

The surname Lerner comes from a Middle English word meaning, simultaneously, to learn and to teach. Dawn learns her lesson when she's shot by Daryl immediately after shooting Beth.
6. Dr. Harlan, Dr. Emmett

Answer: Carson

Dr. Harlan Carson is the Hilltop's doctor, who performs an ultrasound for Maggie and gives her prenatal vitamins. His brother, Dr. Emmett Carson, is killed by Negan, who throws him into a furnace after Dwight frames him by slipping part of Sherry's letter into his desk. Simon later seizes Dr. Harlan Carson to serve in his brother's place.

The surname, which is of Scottish, Welsh, and Gaelic origins, means "Carr's son."
7. Tammy Rose, Earl, Ken

Answer: Sutton

Tammy is a member of the Hilltop. Her son Ken dies while on a run, which causes her husband Earl to turn bitter against Maggie. He plots against her and is jailed, but eventually forgiven. Tammy is decapitated by Alpha, and her head ends up on a pike marking the Whisperer's borders.

The surname Sutton comes from de Sutton, meaning of Sutton, and is derived from a word a word referring, generically, to a southern farm (suth or sudh).
8. Eric

Answer: Raleigh

Eric is Aaron's boyfriend and works with him to recruit people for the Alexandria Safe Zone. He is shot during a skirmish with the Saviors, and Aaron leaves him bleeding out by a tree to return to the fray. Aaron later finds him turned and joining a herd of walkers.

The Anglo-Saxon surname refers to those who come from Raleigh village in Devon, County in what is today England.
9. Dr. Steven

Answer: Edwards

This doctor of Grady Memorial Hospital preserves his position by killing patients (who are held captive). He secretly works for Dawn Lerner, but develops a fondness for Beth.

The surname Edwards means "son of Edward" and comes from an Old English words meaning prosperity and guard.
10. Paul "Jesus"

Answer: Rovia

In the comic, Jesus/Paul's last name is Monroe, but it's changed for the television series to Rovia, perhaps because we already have a Monroe family in Alexandria. The origins of the surname are unclear, and the 1880 census shows only one Rovia family living in all of the United States, though by 1920 there were four, three of them in California.
