Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Carol, Ed, Sophia

Answer: Peletier

At the start of the apocalypse, Ed drove his wife and daughter toward Atlanta in a Jeep Cherokee with a trunk full of MREs and storage food. They ran into Shane, Lori, and Carl on the highway during a traffic jam, and ended up joining the Atlanta survivor camp with them.

The origin of "Peletier" is from the old French and comes from a word meaning animal skin. It was a Norman name given to fur dealers.
2. Daryl, Merle

Answer: Dixon

The Dixon boys grew up in the backwoods of Georgia to an abusive father and an alcoholic and possibly negligent mother. Merle was in and out of Daryl's life, having spent some time in juvenile detention and eventually leaving home to join the army.

Dixon is a Scottish surname derived from the Dicksons, who were descendants of two Scottish noble families, Keith and Douglas. Scottish surnames are common in the southern United States, from where Daryl and Merle hail, and the term "redneck" finds its origins in the term used for the Lowland Presbyterians who wanted Scotland to be Presbyterian rather than accept the Anglican church as its state church.
3. Lori, Rick, Carl

Answer: Grimes

Rick was left behind in a hospital bed at the start of the apocalypse while his friend Shane fled toward Atlanta with his wife Lori and son Carl.

Grimes, as a surname, has Norse Viking origins, and probably comes from the name Grimr. That name, in turn, is derived from the Old English word for "mask."
4. Miranda, Liza, Louis

Answer: Morales

Morales is one of the original members of the Atlanta Survivor Camp in season 1 and is known to the audience only by his last name, though we are given the names of his wife (Miranda) and children (Eliza and Louis). When the Morales family parts ways with the rest of the group, Eliza gives Sophia the doll that Daryl will later find when searching for her.

The Spanish surname Morales indicates one who lived near a mulberry bush, from the Spanish "mora" for mulberry, which in turn comes from the Latin word "morum."
5. Glenn

Answer: Rhee

Glenn Rhee rescues Rick at the start of season 1 and brings him back to camp. Rhee is the transliteration of the common Korean surname Lee. Other forms of the name include Yi, Ree, Rhie, Rie, Ni, and Nee. Kim is the most common Korean surname, but Lee is the second most common.
6. Hershel, Beth, Maggie

Answer: Greene

Hershel is the father of Beth and Maggie, who live on the Greene family farm at the start of the apocalypse. Greene is one of the most widespread English surnames, though it is sometimes Irish in origin. Pre-7th century in origin, the name Greene comes from the Old English word "grene," meaning, not surprisingly, green.

It's a good name for a family of farmers, who no doubt hope to have a green thumb.
7. Shane

Answer: Walsh

Shane was a King County sheriff's deputy at the start of the apocalypse and fell in love with his best friend Rick's wife.

Meaning "Welshman" or "Wales," Walsh is an Irish surname that came to Ireland after the Norman invasion. It is one of the top 300 most common surnames in the U.S., but the 4th most common in Ireland, as of 2019.
8. Morgan, Jenny, Duane

Answer: Jones

Morgan takes in Rick temporarily at the start of the apocalypse and later meets up with him again in season 5, after rescuing Aaron and Daryl.

Jones comes from English or Welsh origins and means, simply, "John's son." Because slaves often took their last names from their owners, many English surnames are common among African-Americans. In the 2000 census, 37 percent of people with the surname Jones were African-American.
9. Dale

Answer: Horvath

Dale is a prominent character in season 1, but doesn't make it past season 2. He takes Andrea and her younger sister Amy under his wing. He often wears a fisherman's cap, which at one point prompts Daryl to tell him to "Go back to from On Golden Pond!" Dale meets his death in the episode, "Judge, Jury, Executioner" after being attacked by a walker while on patrol. Daryl makes the mercy shot to his head.

The name Horvath is Hungarian and Jewish in origin. Hungary ruled Croatia in the 12th through 15th centuries. The name Horvath is derived from the Hungarian word Horvát, which is the ethnic name for a Croat and was also used to refer to Hungarians who lived or worked in Croatia. The Croats were a Slavic people who, in the 7th century, settled in Pannonia, a Roman province that encompassed modern day western Hungary and northern Croatia, among other areas.
10. T-Dog

Answer: Douglas

"T-Dog" earned his nickname as a college football player, but his real name is "Theodore." There's also a historical figure named Theodore Douglas Robinson, who was the Assistant Secretary of the Navy in the 1920s.

The surname Douglas hails from the Scottish Gaelic word "dubh glasis," which means "black stream."
