Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In Leg 5, teams completing the Detour either had to work with gold or which other item in Dubai's markets?

Answer: Limes

Heading out from the roof of the Four Points hotel in Dubai, U.A.E. in Leg 5, teams were told to head to the Jumeirah Beach Hotel Marina near the Burj Al Arab Hotel. Once there, teams would be able to receive their next clue, a Detour task, once the Dubai Pearl dhow boat arrived at 9:30 in the morning.

The Detour task was a choice between 'Count 'Em Up' and 'Price 'Em Up'. In the former, teams had to visit a spice market to count a sack of dried limes while in the latter, teams went to the Gold Souk to arrange seven pieces of jewelery in order of price from least to most expensive. All of the teams went with 'Count 'Em Up' except Sticky and Sam and, inevitably, Joseph and Grace and James and Sarah.
2. Which team used the U-Turn in Dubai in Leg 5?

Answer: Shane and Andrew

After the Detour, teams were told to proceed on foot to the next route marker found at the Deira Old Souq Station nearby. There, teams found the first Anonymous U-Turn of the race, allowing one team to force a trailing team to complete the side of the Detour they didn't initially finish. Shane and Andrew, who were first out of the Detour, ended up using it to force Paul and Steve to return to the Gold Souk to complete 'Price 'Em' Up', mainly because of Paul's attitude earlier in the day.

The anonymity wasn't necessary; Paul and Steve were right behind the cops.
3. In Leg 5, teams were told to fly to what Turkish city?

Answer: Istanbul

After reaching the Anonymous U-Turn, teams received a new clue telling them to head to the international airport to catch a flight to Istanbul, Turkey. Upon their arrival, they needed to make their way by taxi to the Blue Mosque where a sultan would hand them their next clue. Surprisingly, due to a delay, all eight teams ended up taking the same flight to Turkey arriving in the evening and creating an even playing field.
4. During the Road Block in Turkey in Leg 5, what did team members need to memorize?

Answer: Arabic symbols

Arriving at the Blue Mosque, teams were handed their Road Block clue requiring that each team member chosen have 'a memory that won't go to water'. For this task, the selected member needed to head to the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul. Once there, that person had to memorize eight names found on large signs in the mosque, all of Muslim origin.

Then, they needed to proceed on foot to the nearby Basilica Cistern and place the symbols in the proper order. Teams could return to the Hagia Sophia for a refresher, but only once. Paul, Jo, Grace, Sarah, Lucy, Sam, Ross, and Andrew were selected for this task, but Sarah and Ross both took four-hour penalties for quitting the task.
5. Which team was last to arrive at the Pit Stop in Turkey in Leg 5?

Answer: Ross and Tarryn

Immediately after the Road Block, the eight teams were told to make their way to the fifth Pit Stop of the race, the Istanbul Archaeology Museum. Here, Paul and Steve were the first team to arrive for their first win. As a result, the pair ended up winning a trip for two to the Australian Rally Championship with VIP access valued at $10,000.

In the end of the leg, James and Sarah arrived sixth, but took a four-hour penalty for not completing the Road Block. Ross and Tarryn, however, also took the penalty and ended up arriving in last. Luckily for them, the Pit Stop was non-elimination (which meant that they would be marked for elimination in the next leg); both teams took their penalty at the start of Leg 6.
6. Which team was yielded in Leg 6 in Turkey?

Answer: Michelle and Jo

Leaving the Archaeological Museum of Istanbul in Leg 6, teams were directed to the Ayasofya Hürrem Sultan Hamami Bathhouse where both members needed to strip down and soap each other up enough for their soap bars to wear down and reveal their next clue-- the word DETOUR.

This allowed teams to wash off and dress back up before heading to their next clue and a Yield station. During this one and only Yield of the race, Paul and Steve forced Jo and Michelle, in an attempt to retain their lead, to remain at the station until an hourglass ran out of sand before they were able to continue on.

Otherwise, teams received their Detour task.
7. Which team was the only one to complete the 'Design' Detour found in Leg 6?

Answer: Sticky and Sam

After visiting the Yield, teams commenced their Detour selection, a choice between 'Shine' and 'Design'. In 'Shine', teams located a shoe shine station in Istanbul and had to shine ten sets of shoes from local passers-by. Paul and Steve, Michelle and Jo, Joseph and Grace, Lucy and Emilia, Shane and Andrew, Ross and Tarryn, and James and Sarah all completed this task.

In 'Design', teams instead had to make their way to a bazaar and, using a fabric swatch, hunt through several Turkish carpets for an exact matching pattern. Sticky and Sam completed this one.
8. In Leg 6, teams encountered an Intersection in Turkey. When intersected, how many groups of four were in the race?

Answer: Four

After the Detour, teams needed to head to Rumeli Castle in Istanbul whereupon they were met with an Intersection forcing them to work in tandem with another team to accomplish the task ahead. Here, when paired up, the teams had to fight in a ring against Turkish oil wrestlers in an attempt to snag an oil lamp off a nearby table.

When this was done, the teams would no longer be intersected and could head onward with their Road Block clue in hand. Michelle and Jo paired up with Paul and Steve, Sticky and Sam paired up with Joseph and Grace, Shane and Andrew teamed up with Lucy and Emilia, and James and Sarah joined Ross and Tarryn.
9. For how long did team members need to spin with the Whirling Dervishes during the Turkish Road Block in Leg 6?

Answer: Five minutes

After the Intersection, teams had to head to the Old City of Istanbul where they had to get a Road Block out of the way. In this one, they needed to answer the question 'Who wants to give it a whirl?', choosing one person to dress up in religious garb and learning the dance of the Whirling Dervishes. Once they perfected the technique and danced for a full five minutes they could continue on. Steve, Jo, Joseph, Sticky, Shane, Emilia, James, and Ross completed this task.
10. Which team was last to arrive at the Pit Stop in Leg 6 (in Turkey) resulting in their elimination?

Answer: Ross and Tarryn

After the Road Block, teams were instructed to head on foot through Istanbul's Old City to the race's sixth Pit Stop, Istanbul's Beyazit Square. Here, Paul and Steve arrived in first for a second consecutive leg of the race. This time they ended up winning a $5,000 computer package from Bing Lee. Four hours behind the leading teams, Ross and Tarryn were unable to forge ahead of James and Sarah and were, thus, eliminated from the race in eighth place.
