Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Heading to Bacacay, Philippines in Leg 1, teams needed to find which of the following outside the Cagsawa Ruins?

Answer: Snake-charmer

In the first leg of the race, eleven teams headed from Sydney, Australia to Manila, Philippines and, then, ten hours southbound to Bacacay, a tourist town in beautiful Albay, Philippines. After a lengthy bus ride, teams needed to find a snake charmer at the depicted Cagsawa Ruins, a Franciscan Church destroyed in the fiery wake of an erupting volcano, to locate the race's first Detour task.

In the Philippines, teams also indulged in balut eggs, caught some pigs, and paddled makeshift rafts to the Pit Stop.
2. In Leg 2, teams memorized a Bollywood routine at Purana Qila, a landmark in Delhi, India better known by what name?

Answer: Old Fort

In Legs 2 and 3, teams raced from Manila in The Philippines all the way to Delhi and Jaipur, India. During the first of these two legs, teams had to spend time with cows, wrap turbans, and become immersed in the world of Bollywood. In Leg 3, teams took a ride to Jaipur to attend Indian driving school, deliver clay pots, and wrap their brains around a logic puzzle in an ancient step well.

In India, two teams were eliminated: Adam and Dane and Sue and Teresa.
3. Which of the following did teams find in the Al Faqa Desert outside of Dubai, U.A.E.?

Answer: U-Turn

Arriving in Dubai in Leg 4, teams ended up driving out into the Al Faqa Desert south of the city for a Detour task involving either dune buggies or camels. For one team, Paul and Steve, both Detour options needed to be completed-- they were U-Turned by a mandatory U-Turn voted on by all other teams (of which six teams voted for them). Following this task, teams returned to Dubai to visit the Wild Wadi Water Park and bet on horses at the Meydan Racecourse.
4. During their Road Block task in Leg 5, team members had to memorize the Arabic symbols found inside what Turkish landmark?

Answer: Hagia Sophia

Arriving in Istanbul, Turkey in Leg 5, teams ended up stopping off at the Blue Mosque, the Hagia Sophia, and the Basilica Cistern all in one night (mainly to complete a memorization-centric Road Block task which, ultimately, forced two teams to take penalties).

The following leg also sent teams through Istanbul, though most of those tasks took teams through the Old City to fight with Turkish oil wrestlers, stop in at a bathhouse, and spin with the Whirling Dervishes.
5. In Paris, France, teams ended up stepping foot on which of these pedestrian areas to receive a clue sending them to Cuba?

Answer: Passerelle Debilly

Teams spent a night in Paris, arriving to visit Le Cordon Bleu for an impromptu baking lesson before taking a whirlwind tour of the city by taxi. Ultimately, the seventh leg took an abrupt turn across the Atlantic Ocean. When teams reached an artist painting the Eiffel Tower from the Debilly pedestrian footbridge, they were told that they would be flying to Havana, Cuba to continue the race. Of course, when they arrived there they ended up continuing through the Pit Stop and into Leg 8 almost immediately.
6. Arriving at the Hotel Nacional in Havana, Cuba in Leg 7, did teams check in at the Pit Stop?

Answer: No

The Hotel Nacional, while marking the end of the gruelling seventh Leg of the race (taking teams from Istanbul to Paris to Havana) ended up being a wake-up call for the racers. Upon stepping onto the mat here (after a visit to the Tropicana), teams ended up being handed their very next clue immediately and were told to make their way to the Marina Hemingway to begin Leg 8 with no rest.

The proceeding leg of the race took teams through historic Old Havana and to Australia Township.
7. Overlooking Vancouver, Canada, teams completed their Leg 9 Road Block on the cable car on what mountain?

Answer: Grouse Mountain

Found in North Vancouver, this mountain played host to the seventh Road Block of the race (found in Leg 9) where one member of each team had to take a ride on top of the cable cars stretching up the mountain to collect race flags. While in this Canadian West Coast city, teams ended up kayaking, performing lumberjack themed tasks, and meeting with the Squamish First Nations people before checking into their Pit Stop.

This leg also featured the only Fast Forward of the race for which Paul and Steve stripped down to pose for a still life art class.
8. In Leg 10, teams completed tasks in Banff and Lake Louise in what Canadian Province?

Answer: Alberta

Taking a trip into the Rocky Mountains in Leg 10, the final five teams ended up completing a slew of physical tasks in the wintery landscape of Alberta, Canada. Here, teams had a Road Block task involving climbing an ice wall and a Detour sending them to the ski slopes for a slalom run or an avalanche search.

In addition, teams hit the trails on dogsleds to search for their clues on the Great Divide before checking in at the beautiful Banff Springs Hotel.
9. What task did teams complete at the Mutianyu section of the Great Wall of China in Leg 11?

Answer: Road Block

Reaching the Mutianyu section of the Great Wall, teams ended up having to complete a Road Block before heading off to the final Pit Stop at the Forbidden City. Because they'd spent all their money getting to the Detour upon landing in Beijing, Joseph and Grace never actually reached the correct section of the Great Wall, actually passing into Inner Mongolia.

They ended up getting eliminated by Grant out on the race course without completing the task.
10. In Guilin, China, teams received a clue from fishermen using which abnormal method of catching fish?

Answer: Using cormorants

Starting the final leg of the race in Guilin, China, teams proceeded to the waters of the Lijiang River where, dressed like the local fisherman and paddling into the waters, they had to ask the locals for their clues in Mandarin Chinese. The fishermen, of course, had the unique method of fishing with cormorants, trained to scoop fish from the water. Following their tasks in the Guilin area, teams proceeded toward the finish line back in Brisbane, Australia and onward to Fraser Island.
