Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. On the first day of the competition, the contestants moved into an isolated ranch in which state?

Answer: California

On Day 1, twelve overweight Americans arrived at a ranch in sunny Southern California, eager to shed pounds and win money. Upon their arrival they were greeted with their favourite foods, most of which were fatty and unhealthy. Some opted to take a taste while others set their sights on the prize: $250,000 and a chance at a new life in better health. Contestants' weights ranged from 167 to 436; regardless of their weights, they would all be in for a tough battle against obesity. A tour of the ranch revealed a large, luxurious dormitory and a 24-hour gym as well as rolling hills and green pastures.
2. Which contestant was not on the Blue Team?

Answer: Dave

As soon as the contestants arrived they were split into two teams of six, each donning either red or blue to train with their respective groups. Each team was assigned a trainer who would work with them over the course of their time at the ranch. Although contestants' weights varied amongst each other, the initial groups were virtually even in weight for the sake of fairness. Whichever team lost the most weight (in pounds) for that week would be spared from having to vote off the member not pulling their weight (literally).
3. Who was the trainer for the Red Team this season?

Answer: Jillian Michaels

Jillian Michaels was the trainer for the Red Team which consisted of Dave, Kelly Min., Lisa, Lizzeth, Matt, and Ryan while Bob Harper was the Blue Team trainer with Aaron, Andrea, Dana, Gary, Kelly Mac, and Maurice under his wing. The trainers accompanied their contestants through the first two months of the competition at which point the final three would return home to continue their weight loss goals for a chance to win $250,000. Both teams embarked on separate diets and weight loss plans. The trainers had no say in which contestants were sent home.
4. Which of these was not a temptation presented to the contestants over the course of the show?

Answer: A wrongly-delivered pizza

Over the course of the show, the contestants were given the opportunity to prove how much they actually wanted to be there, usually in the form of resisting temptations. On some occasions, the contestants returned home to find a single cinnamon bun on a table and the person to eat it would be allowed a five minute phone call. On another day, they were presented with piles of cupcakes and the person to eat the most would receive dinner with a loved one.

This, of course, provided a bit of tension amongst the contestants, but universal resistance usually led to a better prize in the end.
5. During the course of the show, contestants needed to complete challenges for different rewards. Which of these was not a team challenge?

Answer: Run a relay race around a high school track

Before the weigh-in every week, the two teams would battle in a challenge which would result in a major award for the winner. When teams were uneven, the winning team would be able to choose who (from the team with more members) would sit out the next weigh-in, possibly protecting themselves or dooming the opposition.

In other instances, teams were rewarded with lard (five pounds-worth) to use against the other team in a weigh-in or they received spa treatments to relax after weeks of hard work.
6. When only six contestants remained, the teams were dissolved. At this point, individual contestants had to stay above which of these on a graph to avoid being placed up for elimination?

Answer: A yellow line

When the game became an individual competition (ie. no teams), the contestants were introduced to a specific chart. As usual, for weigh-ins, they would step on the scale and find out how much weight they lost for that week. That number would then be use to calculate the percentage of body fat lost over the course of the competition and the two contestants with the lowest percentages would be placed up for elimination.

These two were indicated by a yellow line; once they crossed the line they were vulnerable.

This would be proceeded by a vote, as usual.
7. Who was the only female Biggest Loser during the time at the ranch?

Answer: Andrea

Every week, the 'Biggest Loser' would be the person who either lost the most weight or had the highest body fat percentage (depending on whether there were teams or not). Over the course of the show, men were the predominant occupiers of the role. On one occasion in week five, however, Andrea ended up losing a total of seven pounds (one more than Dave) to become that week's Biggest Loser; the remaining titles were claimed by men as the show continued. Half of the weeks featured a Biggest Loser with double-digit weight losses and none were eliminated in the same week that they received the title.
8. Over the course of their time at the ranch, who had the biggest weight loss in any single week?

Answer: Matt

In the very first week of the show, the contestants were shocked to see drastic weight loss across the board. Matt, the Biggest Loser in that week, ended up dropping twenty-two pounds alone, almost half the amount of weight he lost at the ranch. These significant drops can be attributes to the body recalibrating itself; aside from the shock to the system (in the form of a new diet and exercise), it was also likely water-weight. The following week, weight loss didn't come as easy-- the biggest drop was seven pounds (by Aaron). In week two, Matt gained three pounds; he was the only contestant during this season to regain weight between weigh-ins.

Matt also had the most increase in the next week.
9. In the reunion show, which previously-eliminated contestant lost the greatest percent of body fat?

Answer: Dave

After the show's finale, the nine eliminated contestants were asked to return for a chance to win $100,000 as the 'Biggest Loser' amongst them. Whoever lost the greatest amount of body fat would win regardless of how much time they spent at the ranch or pursuing their own healthy lifestyles at home. Drops were seen across the board; Dave, the third eliminated Red Team member (in Week 5) returned to the show having lost 25% of his body fat, the most of anyone on the show. Body fat percentages were calculated using dunk tests and measurements recorded at the start of the season and at the very end of the show.
10. Which contestant was 'The Biggest Loser' of season one?

Answer: Ryan

When the final three returned to the scale in the final live episode of the season, they were weighed in one final time. The percentage of weight lost was added to the percentage of body fat lost to create their final score. Kelly Min. came in third place losing 79 pounds and 32.6% body fat for a total of 50% overall. Gary came in second losing 71 pounds and 23% body fat for a total of 53%. Finally, Ryan came in first place with a total of 54%.

He lost 122 pounds off his original weight of 330; he also lost 18% of his body fat.

He became the Biggest Loser and left with $250,000 in cash.
