Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Season 5 of "The Biggest Loser" was slightly different to previous seasons, in that its focus was on couples. Which of the following pairings was not represented in this particular season?

Answer: Teacher and pupil

For its fifth season, and for the first time ever, "The Biggest Loser" focused on couples. In addition to couples consisting of family members, including brothers, mother and son, newlyweds, husband and wife, mother and daughter and father and daughter, the show also included former teammates, best friends, strangers and an ex-husband and his wife. Each couple wore different coloured shirts, and their first challenge involved having to race up and down a hill in order to secure the trainer of their choice.
2. One of the cruelest twists of the season involved pitting six against one, in an 'all versus one' weight loss challenge. Having been crowned the biggest losers of the previous week, which 'sunny' couple faced off against six other united teams in an incredible David vs. Goliath challenge?

Answer: Yellow team

In a dramatic week 4 twist, ex-husband and wife team Paul and Kelly, (representing the yellow team), were pitted against the rest of the contestants in a David vs. Goliath weight loss challenge. Having come out on top at the previous weigh-in, the yellow team were identified by the remaining contestants as the team they would most like to vote off.

This resulted in a change in the game, which came in the form of a challenge to see whether the yellow team could beat the average percentage of the six remaining teams. If they were successful, they would then be able to vote off the couple of their choice, but if they failed, they themselves would immediately be eliminated. Though the odds were not in their favour, the yellow team succeeded in their task, and chose to eliminate mother and daughter, Ali and Bette-Sue, thus wiping out the pink team.
3. One of the most unusual challenges of the series involved the trainers, Bob and Jillian, who had to compete against one and other in an escalator-climbing challenge, in order to win the right to choose their teams.

Answer: True

At the beginning of the season, the contestants got the opportunity to choose their trainers, before then being told that Bob and Jillian would be teaming up to train them together. However by the fifth week the rules had changed again, and Bob and Jillian were forced to go head to head in order to pick the couples they wanted to train.

When Bob won the challenge, he picked the powerhouses, leaving most of the women, and only two men for Jillian to train.
4. Which American celebrity chef made two appearances on this season of "The Biggest Loser", first to issue a cooking challenge, and then to show the contestants how to make healthier versions of their favourite foods?

Answer: Rocco DiSpirito

During the sixth week, American celebrity chef, Rocco DiSpirito, challenged the contestants to create a calorie controlled three course meal. Though he was impressed by the efforts of both the black and blue teams, it was the black team that was victorious, winning a meal cooked by Rocco, as well as video messages from their loved ones.

His second visit came much later on in the season, during the fifteenth week, when he showed the final four how to make much healthier versions of their favourite foods.

Incredibly, each new dish had at least 600 calories less than their original versions.
5. When the contestants were allowed home in the eighth week, Jillian kept in regular contact with all but one of her black team. Which member of the black team was it that not only ignored every one of Jillian's calls, but also ate numerous chicken wings and drank plenty of cola?

Answer: Paul

The contestants were really challenged in their eighth week on campus, as they were all sent home for a week. Without their trainers, a fridge full of healthy food and a state of the art gym, some contestants struggled to keep on track. However no contestant went more off track than black team member, Paul, who seemed to forget everything he had been taught by Jillian.

Moreover while the rest of the team all kept in contact with Jillian by phone, Paul refused to answer her calls. Therefore when he returned to campus he was faced with the wrath of Jillian Michaels, and was forced to apologise to her in front of the rest of the contestants.
6. As always, many of the rewards earned by the contestants were in actual fact, double-edged swords. This was particularly evident when the blue team won a trip to which American city, which is often referred to as Sin City?

Answer: Las Vegas

During the ninth week of this season, as a direct result of Jay winning the title of biggest loser of the week, much to Bob's dismay, the entire blue team went off to Las Vegas. Despite warnings from their trainer, Roger and Dan didn't make it back to their hotel rooms until 6am the next morning, infuriating Mark, who was doing all he could to set the team up for a good weight loss.

In the end it was indeed the blue team who lost the weigh-in, and they were forced to send Mark, one of the game's biggest competitors, home.
7. During the tenth week of the season, a vending machine challenge resulted in five of the seven remaining players receiving a 1-Pound Pass. Still, even this was not enough to save the final male member of the black team from being eliminated from the competition. Who was this unfortunate contestant, who had also given immunity to his one-time partner, Brittany?

Answer: Bernie

The tenth week of the competition saw numerous prizes being won as a result of a vending machine challenge. Each player was given the opportunity to make as many selections as they wished, until they won the 1-Pound Pass. However if they were given a high calorie snack instead, they were forced to eat it.

There was also the added incentive of monetary prizes, which were noted on the back of packets of Wrigley's Extra chewing gum. Having won the title of biggest loser of the week the previous week, Bernie earned the right to give immunity to one of the other contestants, and chose his former partner, Brittany.

This sealed his fate, as had he not given the immunity to her, it would have been she and not he who fell below the yellow line.
8. Which previously eliminated female contestant earned her way back into the game, by losing 28.63% of her body weight?

Answer: Ali

Week eleven threw a spanner in the works as just as the remaining contestants began to look towards the finale, it was revealed that the fourteen eliminated contestants were being given a chance to get back in the game. Having been called back into the weigh-in room by host Alison Sweeney, the six remaining contestants were forced to confront not only the eliminated players, but also the fact that one woman and one man would be returning to campus. Representing the pink team, who left after only four weeks, Ali Vincent beat all of the other eliminated women, by losing a staggering 67lbs to earn a slot back on campus. Meanwhile the male winner was Mark Kruger, who represented the black team, and re-joined his brother Jay on campus by losing a total of 90lbs.
9. Which Southern Hemisphere country did the final five jet off to, where they competed in a grueling triathlon?

Answer: Australia

During the fourteenth week of season 5 of "The Biggest Loser", the contestants spent the week in Australia. Together with their trainers, Bob and Jillian, the final five got to experience all that Australia had to offer, sampling local cuisine and going dancing. They even got the opportunity to speak to the winner of season 2 of Australia's "Biggest Loser", Adro Sarnelli.
10. Which contestant won this season of "The Biggest Loser", making history in the process by becoming the first female to win the US' version of the show?

Answer: Ali

It was former pink team member, Ali Vincent, (who began her weight loss journey with her mother, Bette-Sue), who won season 5 of "The Biggest Loser", making her the first woman to ever do so on the US version of the show. Squaring up to fellow female, Kelly, and weight-loss machine, Roger, in the final, Ali won with a total weight loss of 112lbs.

As a result she won the grand prize of $250,000. However the distinction of being the first-ever female winner of a series of "The Biggest Loser" actually belongs to Jodie Prenger, who won series 2 of the UK's "Biggest Loser" in 2006.
