Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Following his regeneration scene in "Logopolis", Peter Davison began season 19 in January of 1982 with what serial?

Answer: Castrovalva

"Castrovalva" was a four-episode serial that aired between January 4 and 12. Following his regeneration, The Doctor's three companions took him back to the TARDIS to recuperate. Unable to make use of the 'Zero Room', which contained Time Lord healing technology, they sought out the 'Dwellings of Simplicity' on the planet of Castrovalva. What they didn't realize, however, was that it was all a trap, laid by The Master.

Question by reedy
2. Peter Davison's Doctor inherited three companions when he regenerated. Which of these was NOT one of them?

Answer: Sarah Jane Smith

Sarah Jane Smith (Elisabeth Sladen) was the companion for the Third and Fourth Doctors, although she did make later appearances in a couple of specials.

Adric (Matthew Waterhouse) was a genius from the E-Space parallel universe world of Alzarius, Nyssa (Sarah Sutton) was an aristocrat from the planet Traken, and Tegan Jovanka was a flight attendant from Australia.

Question by reedy
3. The Fifth Doctor's signature style was a variation of a sporting uniform in the Edwardian style. For which sport?

Answer: Cricket

Davison's cricketer's uniform, as described on the Wikipedia 'Fifth Doctor' page, is "a cream-coloured frock coat, striped trousers, plimsoll shoes, and occasionally a pair of spectacles. He frequently wore an optimo-style Panama hat that had a red band with glittering silver sequins, which he would roll up and place in an inside coat pocket."

It should be noted that the Fifth Doctor also carried a cricket ball in his pocket.

In the 2007 special "Time Crash", Tenth Doctor David Tennant made several comments about Davison's costume, poking a little fun at his idiosyncrasies (the celery on the lapel, his squeaky voice when shouting, and wearing spectacles he didn't need).

4. The Fifth Doctor wore a stalk of celery on his lapel as part of his 'costume', but it also had a function beyond mere decoration. When gases were present to which The Doctor was allergic, it would change colour, to which colour?

Answer: Purple

This amazing property was revealed by The Doctor to companion Peri Brown in the serial "The Caves of Androzani". He explained to her that he was allergic to gases within the Praxis range of the spectrum, and should the celery change colour, he would then eat it to counter the effects of the gas".

Question by Aragom
5. The Fifth Doctor never used a sonic screwdriver during his time as The Doctor.

Answer: False

The Doctor's sonic screwdriver was first introduced in 1968 with the Second Doctor, but Peter Davison was the last to use one during the original series. The Fifth Doctor's sonic screwdriver was destroyed during "The Visitation" in Davison's first season (1982). A sonic screwdriver was not seen again in the series until the 1996 movie.

Question by sherylepaas
6. One of The Doctor's companions died during the serial "Earthshock" by crashing into the Earth while on board a space freighter. Which companion was it?

Answer: Adric

The freighter ship that Adric died on was being used by the Cybermen in an attempt to destroy the planet (anti-matter engines would cause extreme devastation in the crash). While attempting to make the ship jump in time, Adric flung the ship 65 million years into the past. The Doctor noted to himself that it was in this time that a large object struck the Earth, wiping out the dinosaurs.

"Earthshock" was Davison's sixth serial, broadcast in four episodes between March 8th and 16th, 1982.

Question by sherylepaas
7. The Black Guardian, last seen by the Fourth Doctor in the 1979 story arc "The Key to Time", returned to face Davison's Doctor in a three-serial storyline. Which of these was NOT one of them?

Answer: The King's Demons

As part of the 20th anniversary, every serial in 1983 had a previously-seen villain/race return to plague The Doctor once again. The Black Guardian trilogy of serials began with "Mawdryn Undead", continued with "Terminus", and concluded with "Enlightenment". They were the third, fourth and fifth serials of the season, for a total of 12 episodes broadcast between February 1st and March 9th.

The personification of chaos in the universe, the Black Guardian worked to counter the White Guardian (embodying order). Having been thwarted by The Doctor once already, the Black Guardian planted an operative to sabotage The Doctor's efforts and to kill him - companion Vislor Turlough.

Question by Aragom
8. Peter Davison's last serial as the Fifth Doctor was voted (in 2009) as the best "Doctor Who" story in history. What was the name of this serial, that culminated in The Doctor's regeneration?

Answer: The Caves of Androzani

"The Caves of Androzani" was a four-part serial that aired between March 8-16, 1984. Davison's Doctor ended up sacrificing himself to save the life of his companion Peri Brown, after they had both received a lethal exposure to spectrox (a powerful drug created by the bats of Androzani Minor's caves). The only way to counteract the drug was with milk from the same bats, but The Doctor spilled some of the milk as he returned to the TARDIS, and had to choose whether to save either Peri or himself.

Question by Aragom
9. The 1993 (30th Anniversary) special "Dimensions in Time" featured five Doctors in a crossover with the soap opera show "EastEnders". Which other Doctors joined Peter Davison for this special?

Answer: Jon Pertwee, Tom Baker, Colin Baker, and Sylvester McCoy

"Dimensions in Time" aired in two episodes on the 26th and 27th of November, 1993. In addition to including the Third through Seventh Doctors, there were also a slew of companions: Ace, Susan Foreman, Victoria Waterfield, Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, Captain Mike Yates, Liz Shaw, Sarah Jane Smith, Leela, K-9 Mk. II, Romana, Nyssa, Peri Brown, and Mel Bush.

The story involved a plot by The Rani to trap all seven incarnations of the Doctor in a time loop in London's East End. A message sent by Tom Baker's Doctor to the others explained the threat and that the First and Second Doctors had already been captured.

Question by reedy
10. In 2007, a short 'excerpt' ofDoctor Who" entitled "Time Crash" was aired in which the Fifth Doctor met a more recent incarnation. Which was the more modern version he encountered?

Answer: The Tenth Doctor (David Tennant)

"Time Crash" was written by Steven Moffat before he took over the reigns of the show from Russell T. Davis and was transmitted as a part of the BBC's annual fundraiser, "Children In Need".

Chronologically, it took place after the events "The Last of The Timelords" (the end of David Tennant's second season). It also served as a prelude to that year's Christmas special ("Voyage Of The Damned") as the TARDIS crashed into the Titanic at the end of it.
