In the end, however, Denise abducts Joey and is revealed to have also been under the influence of Joe Carroll.

Joe Carroll, from behind bars, has put into motion a series of murders to be performed by his acolytes. Carroll had always aspired to be an author (he wrote a book, though not a successful one), and Hardy had written a book about capturing Carroll. Now, Carroll wants Hardy to write a book about the murders where Hardy is the flawed hero and Carroll is the villain. Carroll has a whole plan in place, and it is up to Ryan Hardy to redeem himself and foil Carroll's plans.
