While waiting for Kate and her boyfriend to arrive, Dorothy takes out her angst on Rose and Blanche, both of whom have the misfortune of being directly in her line of fire. After repeatedly opening the front door to look for signs of Kate, and exclaiming "Oh, great, great! Wonderful! My daughter is lost! Oh, I'm just terrible at giving directions", Dorothy refuses to be calmed.

Indeed when Blanche steps in and says, "I gave Kate the directions over the phone", Dorothy quips acidly, "And who are you, Rand McNally? You couldn't make a mistake?" She then turns viciously on Rose, who, having just entered the room with refreshments, asks innocently, "Shall I set this down some place?" Still ill-tempered and tetchy, Dorothy sarcastically spits out, "No, Rose. Go to the corner and open a stand!" When Dorothy does finally sit down, she utters the quote mentioned in the question.

This hilarious moment is brought about by Sophia, who enters the living room in her dressing gown, only to be enveloped in an enormous bear hug, courtesy of her granddaughter, Kate. Taken aback for moment, Sophie expresses her emotion with the quotation mentioned in the question, much to Kate (and the audience's) amusement. Clearly then, Kate has plenty of affection for her grandmother, whom she also flatters with the words, "Grandma, you look sensational".

Much of the beginning of this particular episode is taken up with talk about Dorothy's hopes for her daughter's relationship with her boyfriend, a doctor named Dennis. Though she does initially tell Rose and Blanche that she doesn't care what "he does for a living", she does eventually admit that "if they happen to get married [she] will shout from every rooftop in Miami 'My son-in-law's a doctor!'" Therefore when Kate arrives and informs them that she and Dennis are intending to elope in the Bahamas, Dorothy is overwhelmed, seemingly unable to believe that her dreams for her daughter are actually coming true.

Though thrilled by Kate's big announcement, Dorothy quickly tries to convince her not get married in the Bahamas, claiming she'd "always dreamed of giving" her daughter "a wedding". Kate then reveals that it is the strained relationship that exists between her mother and father that led to her decision, asking Dorothy "Don't you think it would be little awkward with you and dad not talking?" Dorothy then comes out with the response detailed in the question, further proving Kate's point.

Prior to speaking to Stan, Dorothy reveals her contempt for him by labelling him a "yellow-bellied sleazeball". However as soon as he answers the phone she alters her tone, in order to please Kate and show her daughter that she and Stan can be civil to each other. Indeed her performance on the phone is so convincing that Blanche tells her "Dorothy, you were magnificent".

With a wedding to prepare for, Sophia finds herself roped into preparing the rice parcels to throw as confetti. However a nit-picking Blanche dislikes her attempts, telling her "Oh, no honey, you're using too much rice", causing Sophia to stubbornly stop helping altogether.

Hilariously, when Stan knocks on the door, Dorothy does open it only to then shut it immediately. When she goes back to open it for the second time, Stan says to her, "Dorothy, it's Stan. Don't you recognise me?" Deadpan, Dorothy tells him, "Of course I recognised you, that's why I slammed the door in your face".

When he shrugs off the incident, Dorothy goes in for the jugular, criticising his appearance by mocking his toupee.

Throughout this episode Sophia eats so many of Rose's cheese balls that she takes to guarding them at the buffet table, much to Blanche's chagrin. The latter does then tell Rose to allow Sophia to keep eating them, because nobody else will, a point that is subsequently proved by the priest's reaction. Though Rose has no verbal reaction to this, her sulky face speaks volumes.

Once Stanley enters this episode, Dorothy spends all of her time trying to withstand the urge to physically hurt him. As a result, Rose and Blanche do all they can to provide some assistance, with the latter telling Dorothy to squeeze her hand whenever she feels as if she is losing control. Needless to say, Blanche suffers quite a bit of physical pain in this episode, as a result of Dorothy's vice-like grip on her hand.

Dorothy spends most of this episode feeling angry at Stan for the way in which he broke up their thirty-eight year marriage, but it is only after a pep talk from Sophia that she actually tells him how she feels. When she is finally alone with him she shows how hurt she is by his actions, particularly the fact that she was told the marriage was over by his "lawyer, over the telephone".
