In the beginning of this episode, Elaine, Jerry, and George are sitting in Monk's Coffee Shop flipping through the newest J. Peterman catalog. After this, George says that he has to return to work despite how little he is actually doing because it's the off-season for baseball.

He notes that he combats this by pretending to look busy. Meanwhile, Elaine complains that she can't finish a story about a new product because marathon runner Jean-Paul Jean-Paul is staying at her apartment.

Jean-Paul ended up missing out on the Olympic gold medal years before this episode because he slept through his event, the marathon. Elaine says that it should be easy having him over, but Jerry comments that she has a big burden on her shoulders because she needs to wake Jean-Paul for the event. Meanwhile, George gets angry at a fly in his office and his boss, Mr. Wilhelm, notices his frustration.

When Elaine introduces Jerry to Jean-Paul, he immediately asks what went wrong on the morning of the big race and he vows not to let Jean-Paul miss the New York City Marathon. Meanwhile, Kramer begins filling the hot tub that he has placed in his living room.

He plans to heat it to 120 degrees, which Jerry notes is about the temperature of the coffee that he was scalded with in a previous episode.

Noticing George's rage and frustration with his work, Wilhelm decides to put George on a fun assignment to take his mind off things. He tells George to spend some time with representatives of the Houston Astros to show them a good time. Meanwhile, Jerry confronts Elaine about the alarm clock and Jean-Paul, and she says that she has too many things to worry about, so Jerry takes over.

This provides Jerry with further proof that Elaine should worry more about Jean-Paul's alarm system. Meanwhile, Kramer enjoys his hot tub, which Jerry compares to a human bacteria frappe. Kramer, on the other hand, compares the luxurious tub to a bath in Sweden. George spends times with the Astros representatives, who end up swearing at numerous points in the conversation.

After Kramer ends up taking a nap in his hot tub, the temperature drops from 105 degrees to below 60 degrees due to a broken heating pump. He ends up having a permanent chill after this and requires heavy clothes everywhere he goes because of his near-hypothermic condition. Meanwhile, George takes to swearing at the Texans that he met and Mr. Wilhelm overhears his conversation with them.

After Jean-Paul unknowingly harasses Elaine's neighbours and landlord (with swears said by George in the coffee shop), he calls Jerry and they decide to stay at a hotel where they can get a wake-up call and get up early enough to get to the race. Meanwhile, Kramer ends up getting a new industrial heating pump for his hot tub so he can raise his core temperature again.

After Jerry makes sure that the alarm clock they have is working, he phones in for his fail-safe wake-up call and accidentally ends up making the wake-up guy at the front desk uncomfortable. In turn, Jerry ends up feeling bad about the situation and they decide to leave and stay at Jerry's apartment. Elaine notices that Jean-Paul isn't in her apartment and ends up searching for him.

Throughout the episode, Elaine decides that her story about the shoe is more important than Jean-Paul. While she searches the streets for the runner, she ends up creating a story that was inspired by herself and the shoes. Meanwhile, Jerry and Jean-Paul don't wake up on time because Kramer's hot tub heater knocks out the fuses for the building. Luckily, due to Jerry's driving, they arrive at the race just as it starts and he begins the marathon.

In the end of the episode, George talks to Mr. Steinbrenner who suggests that George use a hot tub to relax. Meanwhile, Jean-Paul ends up in first place in the race while Kramer, Elaine, and Jerry watch from the side-lines. Unfortunately, he takes a cup of hot tea from Kramer's hand mistaking it for water and he doesn't win because of his burns.
