Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When Daryl makes his first appearance on "The Walking Dead," what is he doing?

Answer: Emerging from the woods in pursuit of a deer

It's Glenn who helps Rick to escape the tank in the second episode of "The Walking Dead." Daryl makes his initial appearance in season 1, episode 3, "Tell it to the Frogs." Several people from the Atlanta survivor camp have gathered around a walker that has made its way to the outskirts of the camp to feast on a fallen deer riddled with arrows.

They have trouble killing it, but eventually decapitate it. Daryl emerges from the woods, angry to see his deer feasted upon. He kicks and curses the body of the walker and then shoots the still chomping head with an arrow, grumbling, "What the hell? It's gotta be the brain. Don't y'all know nothin'?"
2. When Dr. Jenner refuses to open the door to the CDC, he tells Daryl that it "was made to withstand a rocket launcher." Daryl replies, "Well your ___ ain't!" What word belongs in the blank?

Answer: head

In season 1, episode 6, "TS-19," the doors to the CDC close, and the survivors learn that the entire place is about to self-destruct. When they demand that Jenner open the doors, he refuses, so Daryl tries to bust through them with an axe. Eventually, Dr. Jenner opens the doors for them and lets them flee.
3. Daryl is guarded about his past, but he sometimes shares bits and pieces of his history. He once tells a story about how, as a child, he got lost in the woods for several days, and no one came looking for him. To whom does he tell this story?

Answer: Andrea

In season 2, episode 3, "Save the Last One," Andrea joins Daryl in his search for Sophia. He tells Andrea that, as a child, he spent nine days lost alone in the forest. He survived on berries and, at one point, wiped his butt with poison oak. He eventually found his way home, only to discover that no one had been looking for him. His father hadn't even noticed his absence. Daryl promptly proceeded to make himself a sandwich.

Daryl shares this story of his past with Andrea as evidence that Sophia might have managed to survive. This childhood experience may be one of Daryl's motivations for searching for Carol's lost little girl, because no one was searching for him.
4. In his own words, how did Daryl learn to shoot?

Answer: "Gotta eat."

While searching for Sophia, Daryl and Andrea come across a walker hanging from a tree with the flesh of his legs gnawed off. The sight makes Andrea feel sick, so she tries to change the subject by asking Daryl how he learned to shoot. He replies, "Gotta eat. That's one thing these walkers and us have in common. I guess it's the closest he's been to food since he turned. Look at him, hanging up there like a big piņata. The other geeks came and ate all the flesh off his legs."
5. Rick makes fun of Daryl's claim to have seen a chupacabra, asking, "So, you believe in a blood-sucking dog?" What does Daryl reply?

Answer: "Do you believe in dead people walking around?"

In episode 2, season 5, "Chupacabra," Dale asks Rick, "You never heard this? Our first night in camp, Daryl tells us that the whole thing reminds him of a time when he went squirrel hunting and he saw a Chupacabra." That prompts Rick's question and Daryl's snide response. At another time, Merle claims Daryl was high on mushrooms when he thought he saw the Chupacabra.
6. Andrea mocks Daryl for using this word, saying, "Big word from a guy like you. Three whole syllables." What words does Daryl use to describe what Andrea is not?

Answer: Observant

In season 2, episode 1, "What Lies Ahead," the team returns to the nursing home where the Vatos gang had been taking care of the old ones, only to find all the people dead. Andrea suggests the nursing home got overrun by walkers, and when Daryl scoffs, she asks, "Something to say?"

"Yeah," Daryl replies, "how about observant?" After Andrea makes fun of his word choice, he says that walkers didn't overrun the place and only showed up after someone killed all the people. "They're all shot in the head execution style. You're all worried about walkers? I'd be much more worried about the people who came here and did all this. Get a dictionary. Look it up. Observant!"
7. In order to comfort someone who has recently lost a family member, Daryl talks about the loss of his own mother in a house fire. To whom does Daryl tell this tale?

Answer: To Carl, when he loses his mother

After Carl loses his mother during childbirth, Daryl shares with him his own experience of losing his mother. Daryl was out playing one day as a child when he heard that there was a house fire and that someone got burned up. All of the kids headed off to see what was happening. He ran after the other kids, but got there later than them because they all had bicycles and he didn't.

"I ran around a corner and saw my friends looking at me," Daryl tells Carl. "Hell, I saw everybody looking at me. Fire trucks everywhere. It was my house they were there for. That was my mom who was dead, burnt down to nothing."
8. When Daryl finds Merle again, he feels a tug of war between his old family and his new one. Someone tells him, "He's your brother, but he's not good for you. Don't let him bring you down." Who offers Daryl this advice?

Answer: Carol

In season 3, episode 9, Daryl wants to take Merle back to the prison with him, but Glenn and Rick don't want Merle there, not after what he did to Glenn and allowed to happen to Maggie at the hands of the Governor. Daryl, to their surprise, chooses to leave with his brother. They try to persuade him to change his mind and come back alone to the prison. Glenn ultimately pulls his trump card: Carol. He reminds Daryl she'll be heartbroken if he leaves, asking, "What do you want us to tell Carol?" He replies, simply, "She'll understand."

Later, however, after a series of tumultuous events, Daryl wants to return to the prison. Merle refuses. Daryl decides to part ways with his brother and re-join his new family. He tells Merle, "You know, I may be the one walking away, but you're the one who's leaving...Again." Merle ends up going back to the prison with him, where he is eventually, and reluctantly, accepted into the camp.

In season 3, episode 11, Carol stops by Daryl's cell to tell him that she's glad he's back. "He's your brother," she tells him of Merle, "but he's not good for you. Don't let him bring you down. After all, look how far you've come." Daryl looks around his dreary jail cell, and they both laugh.
9. Daryl discovers his brother transformed into a walker. How does he slay Merle's walker corpse?

Answer: He repeatedly stabs it with a knife.

In Season 3, Episode 15, Daryl discovers a scene of carnage. Merle slew some of the Governor's men, but in the end he was killed by the Governor and left to transform. Reanimated as a walker, he began feasting on the slain bodies. Daryl follows a trail of blood and finds him eating. Merle rises from his meal and comes toward Daryl who, weeping, pushes him back.

He draws his knife and tackles the walker to the ground before repeatedly stabbing it in the head. This scene is reminiscent of a similar scene in season one, when Carol hacks into Ed's corpse while sobbing.
10. Zach, a member of the prison camp, keeps trying to guess Daryl's former profession. He guesses a particular job he thinks will explain why Daryl is "surly" but still "likes to help people." What was this hypothetical profession, which caused Michonne to chuckle?

Answer: Homicide detective

Zach, who joins the prison camp at some unknown point, becomes Beth's boyfriend. He keeps trying to guess Daryl's former profession, rationing out his guesses over time. In "30 Days Without an Accident," he guesses that Daryl was a homicide detective. Michonne laughs and says, "No, it makes perfect sense."

Later, in the episode "Still," Daryl confesses to Beth that he had no real job in the old world. "You want to know what I was before all this? I was just drifting around with Merle doing whatever he said we were gonna be doing that day. I was nobody. Nothing."
11. Before the apocalypse, Merle's drug dealer once nearly killed Daryl. Why?

Answer: Over a cartoon about a talking dog

Daryl tells Beth this story in season 4, episode 12, "Still." The experience made him feel as though he had no control over his own life. He relates how he and Merle were over at Merle's dealer's house, all drunk by noon. "We were watching this show and Merle was talking all this dumb stuff about it. And he wouldn't let up. Merle never could. Turns out it was the tweaker's kids' favorite show. And he never sees his kids, so he felt guilty about it or something. So he punches Merle in the face. So I started hitting the tweaker....Then he pulls a gun." The dealer threatened to kill Daryl. "So Merle pulls his gun on him. Everyone's yelling. I'm yelling. I thought I was dead. Over a dumb cartoon about a talking dog."
12. Daryl served as part of the council for which of these camps?

Answer: The Prison Camp

Terminus was home to a group of cannibals. The Atlanta Survivor Camp was Daryl's first camp, and it had no council. The Kingdom was ruled by Ezekiel, and later by Carol in conjunction with Ezekiel.

The prison camp is where Daryl served as a council member. Rick Grimes decided to give up his sole leadership position in season 3, and a prison council was established at some point before the start of season 4. The council consisted of Hershel, Daryl, Carol, Glenn, and Sasha. According to an episode of "The Talking Dead," the council was based on an idea developed by Dale in the comic book series.
13. What is the name of Daryl's pet dog?

Answer: Dog

It's not known when or how Daryl obtained his pet dog named, unimaginatively, Dog, but the canine makes his first appearance in season 9, episode 7, "Stradivarius." Sometime during the time jump, Daryl apparently trained the creature to check traps. Dog is also capable of tracking missing people by scent.

Daryl is fond of his dog, and apparently makes sure the pet eats before he does. When Carol asks Daryl when was the last time he ate, he replies, "Dog ate yesterday." The Dog takes a liking to Connie, and in Season 10, Daryl tells Connie that he thinks Dog likes her better than he likes him.
14. Daryl's served a lot of roles in the apocalypse. Which of the following is a role he first began to play when leading the Sanctuary?

Answer: Biofuel producer

Daryl served as the primary hunter for the Atlanta Survivor Camp. He served on the council at the prison camp. He was a recruiter for the Alexandria Safe Zone, in which role he worked alongside Aaron. He became a biofuel producer when leading the Sancturary after the defeat of the Saviors.

He consulted manuals to convert the motorcycles to run on ethanol and supervised the production of ethanol using corn, which was grown at the Sanctuary. In addition to these roles, Daryl has served as a tracker (to help find missing people), an adviser (at the Hilltop), a leader (of the Sanctuary and in the Coalition), a member of the Alexandria militia, and a soldier for the Coalition.
15. Which of these is not a book that Daryl has been shown to be reading, holding, or otherwise possessing?

Answer: Denim Dreams

Interestingly, the grammatically incorrect Daryl Dixon has probably been portrayed with more books in his hands (or pocket or pack) than any other character in "The Walking Dead." Andrea gives Daryl "The Case of the Missing Man" when he is laid up after she accidentally shoots him. He quips that the book doesn't have any pictures, but he appears to read it. The book was created for the show and does not exist in the real world. Daryl picks up "Treating Survivors of Childhood Abuse" from the battered women's shelter where he stays with Carol while they search for Beth. The book is later shown to be falling out of his pack. He reads "American Sign Language" to be able to communicate with Connie. The audience can see the title sticking out of the back pocket of his pants in the Season 10 premiere when he is waiting to meet Carol's boat on the dock.

The audience also sees Daryl walking about the Sanctuary while reading a manual on converting engines to run on ethanol. But one book we do not see in his possession is "Denim Dreams." That's the book Carol is reading, and tosses aside, when Daryl knocks on the door of her little house outside the Kingdom.
