In Season 1, episode 3, "Tell it to the Frogs", Shane tries to teach Carl how to catch frogs in a bucket. He takes a general, fatherly interest in Carl and also has an affair with Carl's mother Lori when she thinks Rick is dead. In season 1, episode 6, "TS-19", the group demands entry to the CDC. There they find a solitary scientist, Dr. Edwin Jenner. The CDC still has power, and they get to enjoy hot showers and a nice meal, complete with wine. Carl asks for a sip of wine, and though his mother Lori is hesitant to allow him, the others cajole her to. Carl takes one sip and winces.

Carl is shot by Otis in season 2, episode 1, "What Lies Ahead". Otis is hunting in the woods and the bullet goes through a deer and hits Carl. Otis, who is a farmhand on the Greene family farm, takes Carl back to the farmhouse, where Hershel treats his wound.

In season 2, episode 11, Carol tells Carl, "You know, we'll see Sophia again in heaven someday. She's in a better place." Angry and bitter over the loss of his friend, Carl replies, "No, she's not. Heaven is just another lie, and if you believe it, you're an idiot."

In the season 2 episode "Better Angels", Carl shoots Shane after Rick kills him and Shane reanimates. Dale is shot by Daryl before he can die and reanimate. T-Dog is torn apart by walkers. Daryl kills Merle's walker form.

Maggie performs the C-section that brings Lori's baby into the world, but Lori, having lost too much blood, dies in the process. Carl shoots his mother while she is still a human, before she can reanimate. She manages to successfully give birth to Carl's half-sister, however. The little girl is a product of Lori's sexual relationship with Shane.

Carl goes through a litany of possible names - all women the group has lost - but settles on the name of a favorite school teacher from the pre-apocalyptic world. The camp then cares for the baby, with Daryl finding formula and being the first to feed the infant.

Carl names the pig they keep at the prison camp Violet. Rick advises him not to grow too attached to her as one day they plan to eat her for food. Unfortunately, the pig becomes ill, and the disease that begins with Violet eventually spreads to humans in the prison.

It's Rick who tells Carl, "No more kid stuff" in season 2 when he gives him a gun. Carl later repeats Lori's encouragement of "You're going to beat this world" to Judith before he dies.

Carl shoots a young man named Jody even though he is laying his gun to the ground in season 3, episode 16, "Welcome to the Tombs". When Rick tries to talk to him about it, Carl recalls that he failed to shoot the walker that killed Dale, and that Rick's failure to kill the Governor when he had the chance resulted in other deaths.

Sophia and Carl are friends in season one and first meet on the highway before their mothers settle in the same RV camp in the quarry outside Atlanta. Carl meets Patrick at the prison, but Patrick dies from the sickness that spreads there. Enid is Carl's first girlfriend and the girl with whom he shares his first kiss.

When he meets Enid, she already has a boyfriend named Ron, but she seems rather indifferent to him and soon begins spending time with Carl. Lydia does not enter "The Walking Dead" as a character until after Carl's death, and Henry is the one to develop a relationship with her.

Michonne becomes a sort of surrogate mother to Carl after Lori dies, and she eventually establishes a romantic relationship with his father Rick. She shares with Carl about the loss of her own son, who was consumed by walkers. She brings him comic books when she goes scavenging or searching for the Governor, and she eventually becomes the one to raise Carl's little sister Judith.

Some time after Carl's death, Michonne gives birth to his half-brother, RJ.

In season 5, episode 10, "Them", Carl gives Maggie the music box as a reminder of Beth, who died being shot by Dawn Lerner two episodes earlier. Unfortunately, the music box is broken. Daryl fixes it for Maggie, however, and when he gives it back to her, he tells her that Beth was tough, even though she didn't know it.

Ron is angry at Rick because Rick killed his father Pete. While they're trying to escape a herd of walkers that breached the fences of Alexandria, covered in ponchos smeared with walker guts, Ron aims a handgun at Rick. Michonne stabs Ron through the back. He fires reflexively, and the stray bullet ends up hitting Carl's eye.

Carl leads his people to safety through the sewers of Alexandria in season 8, episode 8, "How It's Gotta Be". In Daryl's last words to Carl, he says, "These people, you saved them all. That's all you, man." It's a simple goodbye from a man who has known Carl since season one, but Chandler Riggs, who plays Carl, told "Insider" that he doesn't " think Daryl's really much of a hugger. I think they kind of just have a brotherly understanding and I think Carl understands his appreciation."

Carl is bitten in the side by a walker when he is helping Siddiq to kill them. Siddiq slays the walkers in order to honor his mother, who believed their souls were released when they were killed. Carl is aware he is going to die, so he takes the time before the infection sets in to spend time with his little sister, write letters to his loved ones, and also to lead his people to safety beneath the sewers of Alexandria when the Saviors are preparing to raid it.

When it comes time for Carl to die, in "Honor", he reaches for his gun and insists on shooting himself rather than having Rick or Michonne do it.

Carl is shown writing these letters in an opening montage of the season 8 midseason premiere, "Honor". The letters that can be seen are to Enid, Michonne, Negan, and Rick. This doesn't necessarily mean he didn't write a letter to Daryl, but, if he did, the audience is not shown it, and as of season 10, there was no mention of such a letter.

The audience later learns that in his letter to Negan, he pled with Negan to seek peace: "The way out is working together. It's forgiveness. It's believing that it doesn't have to be a fight anymore - because it doesn't.

It's not until Season 9, episode 11 that the audience learns what he wrote to Enid, however. She tells Luke, "He left me a letter reminding me that 'just surviving,' it isn't living. It took me way too long to get what he really meant."

Carl begins his letter to Rick by listing some of the fondest memories of his pre-apocalyptic childhood and recounting how Rick made him feel safe. "I thought growing up was about getting a job and maybe a family," he writes. "Being an adult. But growing up is about making yourself and the people you love safe. As safe as you can, because things happen... I want to make you feel safe, Dad. I want you to feel like I felt when you held my hand. Just to feel that way for five minutes ... I'd give anything to make you feel that way now."

In season 8, episode 16, "Wrath", Rick has a flashback to that memory of walking with a three-year-old Carl to Ross's farm. It's this memory that makes him change his mind and decide not to kill Negan and to honor Carl's dying wish that he would make peace.
