Lydia is the daughter of the leader of The Whisperers, Alpha. Lydia is, oddly, the only member of the group who seems to have a personal name. Alpha calls her second in command Beta, and her third in command, later in the series, Gamma, but Lydia is always Lydia.

Lydia makes her first appearance in "Adaptation," season 9 episode 9 when she is captured by Daryl. At the time, she is with a group of Whisperers merged with walkers. Daryl shoots them in the knees to determine which are human, and when Lydia sees this happening, she surrenders.

At the time, Lydia is about 16 years old. In season 10, she is 17. We see flashbacks of Lydia toward the start of the apocalypse when she is younger.

Alpha, who is both physically and verbally abusive, has been manipulating her daughter and lying to her that her father was abusive. Lydia believes her mother protected her from her abusive father Frank, but it's actually the other way around. Alpha tells her Frank was killed by another member of their first camp, but in fact Alpha killed him.

For awhile, Lydia's memories are all mixed up, but they begin to become clear to her as she is imprisoned at the Hilltop and as Daryl, who was also abused by a parent, talks to her. She realizes her father was loving and would often sing a song to her to comfort her.

Lydia decides of her own accord to return, even though Daryl seems willing to refuse to hand her over if she wants. She wants to spare Alden and Luke, who are being held captive by Alpha and are being offered as part of an exchange of prisoners.

Henry gets to know Lydia because he is being kept in the cell next to hers for sneaking out and getting drunk. (Daryl also leaves him in there so he can listen in on their conversations and gain information.) They spend time talking and getting to know one another.

Henry is upset when Daryl allows Lydia to return to her mother, and he goes off looking for her. When he finds her, Lydia's mother Alpha commands Lydia to kill him to prove her dedication, but Lydia is unable to.

Daryl looks out for Lydia and becomes like a father to her. He is shown offering her comfort and protecting her, and at one point, she saves his life.

Lydia is played by three different actresses in season 9 and 10. Younger versions of Lydia are played by the siblings Scarlett Blum (in "Omega") and Havana Blum (in "We Are the End of the World"). Cassaday McClincy plays the teenage Lydia.

Lydia hopes Carol will kill her, since Carol still seeks vengeance on Alpha for murdering her son Henry. "Your son's dead because of me," Lydia tells Carol. She holds Carol's spear to her own neck and asks her to kill her. However, Carol refuses and encourages Lydia to live. Eventually, Carol even follows Lydia and Daryl to Alexandria.

Daryl knows she didn't, because he was awake and she didn't leave the house that night, but Lydia shuts herself in Negan's cell, saying she feels safer there.

Lydia tends to Daryl's wound and sits with him through the night until he regains consciousness, but she tells him she couldn't bring herself to kill her own mother. Negan later makes Alpha think he has Lydia tied up in a shed, but the shed is really empty, and Negan kills Alpha.
