Sophia is the daughter of Ed and Carol Peletier. Her father was abusive, but also a prepper who got his wife and daughter to safety at the start of the apocalypse. Carol was a homemaker prior to the start of the apocalypse. At one point, she took Sophia to a shelter in Atlanta to escape Ed. However, Carol ended up going back to her abusive husband.

Sophia and Carl Grimes first meet during a traffic jam on the highway outside of Atlanta at the start of the apocalypse. They become friends at the camp in the quarry, where they can be seen playing together. Sophia also makes friends with the Morales children, Eliza and Louis. Later, in the episode "Nebraska," Carl confesses to Lori that he thought he'd be the one to find Sophia, "Like, maybe she was hiding somewhere, in a cave or a tree. She'd be safe, and I'd be the one to find her and bring her back."

In the comics on which "The Walking Dead" is based, Sophia's mother Carol dies, and she is adopted by Glenn and Maggie. Sophia grows up to marry Carl and becomes Sophia Grimes.

Answer: A walker feasting on a deer

While Carl and Sophia are playing together, the pair find a walker feasting on a deer Daryl shot with his arrows. When they scream and run back to the camp, Shane, Dale, and Rick go to investigate. Carl and Sophia are not used to seeing walkers, as both have been safely in the camp for some time. However, the walkers have begun to migrate away from the city.

In "Wildfire," the Morales family decides to leave the group and head to Alabama while the group heads to the CDC. In a tearful parting, Eliza gives Sophia her doll, and they hug. Daryl later finds the doll washed up in a creek bed and brings it back to the farm as evidence Sophia is still alive. Sophia is played by actress Madison Lintz.

Answer: Checkers

The group heads to the CDC after the quarry camp is overrun by walkers and Sophia's father Ed is killed. In the episode "TS-19," she can be seen snacking and playing checkers with Carl in the game room / rec room of the CDC before bedtime. In a later flashback in the season 2 episode "Chupacabra," Sophia can be seen playing checkers with Carl on the tailgate of one of the cars during the traffic jam. It's clearly a favorite game of the kids, or maybe the only game they have available.

When the group returns to the spot where Rick left her, Sophia is not to be found. Carol later blames Rick for leaving her daughter alone. The group has to move onto the Greene family farm after Carl is shot, but they leave a note on a car saying "Sophia, stay here, we will come back everyday" in case she returns.

The spot where Rick leaves Sophia, in a hollow beneath tree roots, is very similar looking to a spot in Virginia where Carol later finds and rescues Henry, who becomes her adopted son. This parallel with Sophia is made even stronger by the fact that the actor who plays Henry is the brother of the actress who plays Sophia and the two look alike.

Answer: Daryl

Daryl gets frustrated when the others aren't as supportive of the search. He leaves to search for Sophia at night when he hears Carol crying, and he searches for her repeatedly alone during the day. One day, his horse is spooked and he's severely injured in his search. Carol is grateful for his efforts.

Later, in season 3, while scavenging for formula for Judith, Daryl comes across a bunch of children's names on handprints in a nursery. The camera focuses hard on one of them - Sofie - and it's clear that the sight pains Daryl.

Answer: In Hershel's barn

In "Pretty Much Dead Already," Shane opens Hershel's barn. The group has learned that Hershel is keeping walkers alive in there, hoping they can be cured, and Shane wants to kill them all. Several members of the group open fire on the walkers as they emerge.

The very last walker to emerge from the barn, blinking against the sunlight, is Sophia. Carol runs to her crying, but Daryl holds her back. Rick has not participated in the shooting of the walkers that emerged form the barn, but now he levels his gun and shoots Sophia when she approaches.

Answer: A rainbow

When Sophia emerges from the barn as a walker, the camera pans up, and her dirtied blue shirt with the rainbow on it is one of the first things to make her recognizable. Sophia's death occurred offscreen. The audience doesn't know she is dead until her walker form emerges from the barn.

Shane wraps her body in a sheet, and she is buried under the trees alongside Hershel's second wife Annette and his stepson Shawn, who were also being kept as walkers in the barn.

Answer: Rick's and Carol's

Neither Tyreese nor Michonne ever met Sophia. Sophia appears in Rick's hallucination in season 9 as he walks over a pile of corpses on the floor. Sophia appears again in Carol's hallucination in season 10, when Carol, who has been popping pills, looks at a cover of a book and sees it morph to a picture of herself at the head of a table with all her lost children around her - Sophia, Lizzie, Mika, and Henry. Blood is covering the necks of the children.
