Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. It all started so well. Peggy arrived in the Square with a rugby team, and magnanimously invited them to the Vic for a drink later. Her first port of call was the Mitchell house, where she encountered her first unwelcome sight - the wife of a Mitchell family nemesis. Who was this?

Answer: Chrissie Watts

Peggy did not verbally attack Chrissie, but demanded of Sam an explanation as to why Den's wife was being employed to do her hair on her wedding day. Chrissie was lucky - she was let off lightly!

Kate was an unwelcome sight later in the story, but she had been married to one of Peggy's darling sons, not a nemesis. Peggy's problem with Sharon was not through a husband (who had been her son Grant) but for herself, and Pauline Fowler, although she had come up against Peggy on different occasions was not an arch-enemy.
2. Ian Beale was the next to feel the edge of Peggy's tongue; she was horrified to see that the cafe had changed its name back to 'Kathy's' and marched in, verbally attacking Ian with accusations of his swooping down on the inexperienced Sam in order to con her out of one of the Mitchell businesses. What reason did she give for Ian's supposed double-dealing?

Answer: that he was jealous of Phil

Bless his heart - Ian kept his cool! He calmed Peggy down as much as anyone is able to do, and offered to give her the name of his solicitor so she could check that the sale was above-board and the sale was at a good price for the Mitchell family.
3. Peggy's next attack consisted of the immortal line 'Call yourself a Mitchell!', but to which member of her family over the sale of the cafe to Ian Beale?

Answer: Billy

This was in the middle of the Square, where anyone was welcome to overhear and draw their own conclusions.
4. Peggy's day was not all confrontational - she was able to bring forth some Mitchell humour in warning a bride of her husband's philandering ways. Which bride was the object of Peggy's fun?

Answer: Yolande Trueman

Yolande had barely arrived in Walford when Peggy left, so she knew her, but neither Yolande nor Patrick knew that Peggy was aware of their wedding. Peggy's fun was in pretending to warn a lady of a man's habits as if the couple were just seeing each other. Now there's a sense of humour!
5. Peggy's next confrontation was with someone she did not know at all. She went into the Queen Vic and saw a stranger behind the bar - her dukes came up instantly and she demanded an explanation as to her presence. Rosie, who had moved into the Square with her family just a couple of weeks before, was saved the humiliation of losing a verbal battle by whose arrival in the bar?

Answer: Kat

Just after Kat drew Peggy's fire, Alfie came into the bar to greet 'The Duchess' (his name for the matriarch) with great enthusiasm. Rosie was saved as Peggy asked Alfie and Kat their opinion of the groom and they struggled to find the words to answer without lying or telling the truth!
6. Outside once again, Peggy noticed that the Snooker Club was a burnt-out wreck and rushed to see Sam to find out what had been going on. Mother and daughter had a long chat, touching on various different things which had been happening. Which of the following was NOT mentioned?

Answer: that Den had left the Square but his family were still there

One can only feel sorry for Sam. She told the truth as she knew it - she was being manipulated by Andy and believed every word. She told her mother that she and Andy tried to help Billy with his life after Mo left, not knowing how Andy had actually made it impossible for Billy at the time.
7. Billy tried to speak to Peggy after the groom met his prospective mother-in-law, but she would not listen to him at all. Unable to warn his relative, Billy looked to Minty to speak up as he travelled to the church with the mother of the bride. What went wrong?

Answer: Peggy rearranged the cars and travelled with Andy

Although Andy had asked Minty to look after Peggy, to keep her away from Billy, he was unable to speak to her alone until after the ceremony. His best chance was in the car to the church, but Peggy rearranged the cars in order to travel with Andy himself.
8. Even in the church itself Peggy could not help being Peggy. Her next encounter was brief, and sarcastic - what did she say to Pat?

Answer: Oh, Pat. Thanks for coming.

Pat took it in her stride. I love that character - a matronly figure who has been through the mill and generally come up smiling. She is also one of the very few people who have won out against Mrs Mitchell!
9. Newlyweds Martin and Sonia Fowler were the next to be verbally abused by the visiting mother of the bride. Again, her words, taken out of context, could appear innocent enough - 'I'm sure Jamie would be very pleased for you', but they were intended to hurt, and the barb went home. Martin was the cause of Jamie's death, and now he was married to his fiancée. How much time had elapsed between the death and the wedding, in round figures?

Answer: a year and a half

Sonia and Martin had quite a history. In 2000 Sonia gave birth to Martin's baby, Chloe, and then she and Pauline went through a custody battle for the child. Sonia won after Martin admitted to his mother that he was not prepared to be a father, and the baby was adopted. Jamie died in hospital on Christmas Day 2002 after Martin ran him over (he was texting a message at the time), and Sonia was the only person, other than his family, who would talk to him in the months that followed.

A year after Jamie's death Martin and Sonia were together, and were married in June 2004.
10. When Peggy saw Kate outside the Queen Vic on their return from the church she went immediately into Mitchell mode and confronted her ex-daughter-in-law. What did she do to the younger woman?

Answer: she slapped her

Kate had been the means of baby Louise Fowler (Phil's daughter) being returned to her mother Lisa, after Phil was set up by Den Watts and was unable to stop it happening. Peggy, understandably, was insensed over this, but in true Peggy fashion she never stopped to think how her violent actions towards Kate could land her in serious trouble.
11. When Peggy gave Sharon a cruel earful, she did not give her ex-mother-in-law tit-for-tat as she had done many times in the past. Why was Sharon unwilling, or unable, to retaliate?

Answer: she was drunk and unhappy

Peggy was singing the praises of her children (Phil, Grant and Sam) and their achievements, while poor Sharon was desperately unhappy because she was not able to be with Dennis as part of a couple. Peggy's barbs merely added to her misery and she did not respond.
12. Another ex-in-law was the next to receive the harsh end of Peggy's tongue, even though this person was not around. Peggy was speaking to Minty, and described her daughter's past love interests as 'wallies and plonkers'. Who did she single out by name?

Answer: Ricky

Sam and Ricky had run off to be married as teenagers, and their marriage lasted only as long as Sam's interest - she left him once she started a modelling career. As with anyone who dared not allow any of the Mitchell clan their own way, Ricky fell foul of Peggy when he expected his wife to remain at home rather than travel the world without him.
13. Minty finally got to speak to Peggy and he told her what Andy was planning for her little girl. After confirming it with Billy, Peggy was all set to phone Phil to revoke Sam's power of attorney, but first she demanded to see Sam herself. What were her first words to her beloved child when the bride came into the room?

Answer: You stupid, stupid little girl!

Sam had not been having the best of days; just prior to this she had seen her mother attack Kate outside the pub and looked close to tears then. Now her mother's fury turned against her and she almost broke down - this relief she reserved for when she was away from the living room and was able to vent her frustration on Minty.
14. After Peggy had been left alone with Andy, he proceeded, in his own unique fashion, to blend truth and lies together to come across as a loveable rogue, and Minty and Billy as frustrated men jealous of his success and his relationship with Sam.

Answer: True

Minty had confessed his love for Sam when he saw her trying on her wedding dress some days before, and had proposed. Sam told Andy, and he used this previously undisclosed fact to discredit the old 'family sheepdog' (as Peggy described Minty). Billy he dismissed as being incompetent, and this added to Sam's previous description of the failed husband concreted the image in Peggy's mind.
15. Who did Peggy verbally accuse of being a two-faced liar in front of Marcus (the Mitchell family solicitor)?

Answer: Minty

Peggy had certainly had a busy day, having attacked and warned people left, right and centre. With a strong sense of family, despite the way her family had treated each other in the past, she saw herself as the matriarch who had to protect the good name of Mitchell. If that meant deciding who was the good guy and who wasn't, then it had to be done. It was a shame she chose Andy rather than Minty and Billy - but that will lead to another story!

These two episodes (half an hour each) aired on BBC1 on 17 and 18 September 2004.
